For more information, please contact: Gwen Potter–King 1-800-355-0420 Ext. 6 [email protected] t’s a discussion occurring in local municipalities that are deciding whether or not to explore the potential of having a casino. This comes after the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) announced that it is looking to hear from Ontario municipalities that are interested in hosting a casino in their community. The City of Barrie is looking at this option – and if approved, it would be potentially located downtown as part of a future hotel/convention/conference centre and would include both slot machines and table games. As part of the process as set out by the OLG – before there’s even consideration on whether or not a casino is awarded – a public consultation with local residents must be conducted. Seeking public feedback is key to this process when deciding where and if a gaming site should be set up in a municipality. The period for public feedback is currently underway and ends on December 17. Following this time, comments will be assembled and tabulated and presented by way of a Staff Report to General Committee on January 7, 2013. These results will help Council decide whether or not it will pass a resolution supporting this – which is the next step in the process. It’s important to note that a majority response from residents supporting a casino doesn’t necessarily mean Barrie would be chosen for a site. Council would have the final say, and then the OLG would still have to decide if there are vendors interested in operating here. So tell us what you think Barrie – we want to hear your feedback and you can do that several ways. County of Simcoe Long-Term Affordable Housing Strategy With Barrie’s population growing at an annual rate of 5.5% since the mid-1980s and with the city still holding the title of one of Canada’s fastest growing metropolitan areas, Council has adopted the Energy Management Plan (EMP) as a priority initiative to help us plan for efficient energy use and lower energy costs. Below is a quick Q&A to help you understand this new plan and what it means to our City: Why do we need to adopt this? The goals of the EMP are to identify the tasks required and resources needed to ensure the City of Barrie meets the reporting requirements of Provincial Legislation under the Green Energy Act, and implements an energy reduction strategy to reduce energy costs for City of Barrie facilities. What’s the Green Energy Act? The Green Energy Act legislation requires municipalities to report on energy use for all facilities (such as fire halls, recreation and cultural facilities) and all equipment used to supply and treat water. For the City of Barrie this amounts to 66 separate facilities representing over 100 utility accounts (natural gas and electricity are included in the reporting). How will we monitor our energy uses? Energy management software will be purchased in 2013 to help organize utility data. The software will also allow staff to quantify savings from projects and allow operations staff to use energy data in real time for their facility to quantify changes in energy use through different operational schemes. By providing operational staff with the appropriate tools to monitor energy use and changing the focus of operations towards consideration of energy consumption as a priority in building operations, energy use will be reduced. How does this affect Barrie? For 2012, the City of Barrie budgeted $10.5 million dollars for electricity, natural gas and water for all corporate facilities, water supply and waste water treatment infrastructure, as well as for street lighting and traffic signals. This represents a significant cost to the corporation that will only grow as new buildings are completed and as energy costs increase. The EMP identifies $3,900,000 in technological changes (equipment, lighting, controls etc.) that can be implemented within buildings. The plan recommends a six-year implementation period, which staff hopes to complete by 2018. When complete, these projects will save the City of Barrie $4,400,000 in avoided energy costs, which is greater than the cost of the implementation. Have any questions? Find more information under ‘Environment’ in the ‘Living’ section of Barrie.ca. Barrie’s New Energy Management Plan

t’s a discussion occurring in local municipalities that are deciding whether or

not to explore the potential of having a casino.

These results will help

County of Simcoe Long-Term Affordable Housing Strategy

With Barrie’s population growing at an annual rate of 5.5% since the mid-1980s and with the city still holding the title of one of Canada’s fastest growing metropolitan areas, Council has adopted the Energy Management Plan (EMP) as a priority initiative to help us plan for efficient energy use and lower energy costs. Below is a quick Q&A to help you understand this new plan and what it means to our City:

Why do we need to adopt this?
