A Service of Celebration and Thanksgiving in Memory of

Glendon John Shodahl

April 22, 2017

11:00 a.m.

John Shodahl was born in Forest Lake, MN, on February 28, 1934. He graduated from Forest Lake High School in 1952. He served as the President of Student Council, was captain of the foot-ball team and played basketball. Glen served his country in the Ar-my during the Korean War. Glen graduated from the U of M with a BBA degree. He worked for Hauenstein and Burmeister, selling interi-ors to schools, mostly in MN. When Glen wasn’t on the road selling, he was on the road to Crosslake or Florida. He loved boating on Whitefish (not fishing). Enjoyed golfing at Whitefish golf course, and with the golf league from church. It was time to go to Florida in Octo-ber, returning back to the lake come spring. He traveled to every state in the U.S., Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and many countries in Europe. The last years we were taking cruises with our family. Glen was a real family man, a wonderful husband and father. Before he retired he was active in many church activities, teaching, church coun-cil, ushering, social ministry, inviting many people to our church. When he first retired he spent a lot of his time on the computer. He was in-terested in keeping track of the stock market, reading mysteries and playing bridge with Shirley in many social groups. Glen passed away April 17, 2017 at Wealshire of Bloomington, where he has had wonderful care for the last 31/2 years. He was preceded in death by daughter Lynn and parents Genevieve and Glendon C. Shodahl. Glen is survived by wife Shirley of 61 years, his daughter Karen LaPlante; grandchildren Amy Mellang, Victoria LaPlante, Mi-chael (Nicole) Asp; great-grandchildren Sophia, Ashley, and Kristina; sister Georgia (Jim) Hoffman; brother John (LaGretta) Lunde.

RECESSIONAL HYMN OLD RUGGED CROSS

On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross, the emblem of suff'ring and shame; and I love that old cross where the dearest and best for a world of lost sinners was slain.

Refrain So I'll cherish the old rugged cross, till my trophies at last I lay down; I will cling to the old rugged cross, and exchange it some day for a crown.

Oh, that old rugged cross so despised by the world, has a wondrous attraction for me; for the dear Lamb of God left his glory above, to bear it to dark Calvary. Refrain

In the old rugged cross, stained with blood so divine, a wondrous beauty I see; for 'twas on that old cross Jesus suffered and died, to pardon and sanctify me. Refrain

To the old rugged cross I will ever be true, its shame and reproach gladly bear; Christ will call me some day to my home far away, where his glory forever I'll share. Refrain

GREETING

ENTRANCE HYMN 597 MY HOPE IS BUILT ON NOTHING LESS

My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus' blood and righteousness; no merit of my own I claim, but wholly lean on Jesus' name. Refrain

On Christ, the solid rock, I stand; all other ground is sinking sand. When darkness veils his lovely face, I rest on his unchanging grace; in ev'ry high and stormy gale my anchor holds within the veil. Refrain His oath, his covenant, his blood sustain me in the raging flood; when all supports are washed away, he then is all my hope and stay. Refrain When he shall come with trumpet sound, oh, may I then in him be found, clothed in his righteousness alone, redeemed to stand before the throne! Refrain

PSALMODY PSALM 23 Read Responsively DAVID JORSTAD

1The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.

2He makes me lie down in green pastures; he leads me beside still waters;

3he restores my soul. He leads me in right paths for his name’s sake.

4Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I fear no evil; for you are with me;

your rod and your staff— they comfort me.

5You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil;

my cup overflows.

6Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall

dwell in the house of the Lord my whole life long.

LORD’S PRAYER ALLISON LINDMAN, SOLOIST

LESSON ROMANS 8:31-39

31 What then are we to say about these things? If God is for us, who is against us? 32 He who did not withhold his own Son, but gave him up for all of us, will he not with him also give us everything else? 33 Who will bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justi-fies. 34 Who is to condemn? It is Christ Jesus, who died, yes, who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who indeed intercedes for us. 35 Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will hardship, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36 As it is

written,

“For your sake we are being killed all day long; we are accounted as

sheep to be slaughtered.”

37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
