Duncan MacDougall, grandson of Somerled, built Dunstaffnage Castle in the early 1200's. It was the seat of his power and is a mighty fortress in Argyll bordered on three sides by water. No invading force could escape MacDougall’s detection. But when Duncan’s son Ewen backed Balliol in the Wars of Independence, Robert the Bruce defeated him at the Pass of Brander in 1306 and took possession of Dunstaffnage. One hundred and sixty-three years later, in 1469, the king assigned the captaincy of the fortress to the Campbell Family rather than a MacDougall or a Macdonald.
