YOUNG NSW A ‘GOLD TRAIL’ EVENT 1733379 THE short film “Rising from the Flat – From Gold to Glory” will be shown again at the Southern Cross Cinema during the Lambing Flat Festival. It is a lively presentation of the history of Young, and combines recent footage and photographs of Young with historic stills and footage from a 1928 film. The 1928 film, The Birth of “White Australia”, had local residents in the cast and starred Tom Tester and Molly Donoghue (later Mrs. Leo Garry). The old film was found lying almost for- gotten in the Soldier’s Memorial clock tower and has been preserved with the co-opera- tion of Screen Sounds Australia and the Lambing Flat Folk Museum. The film was released during Show Week in September 1928, but was not distributed nationally as talkie films arrived at the same time. A local shareholder company produced the film but was liquidated in 1933. The shareholders lost all their money. The documentation “Rising from the Flat” allows viewers to learn the history of the Lambing Flat gold fields and the subse- quent disturbances and riots as well as the history of the towns buildings both past and present. Local historians Joe Kinsela and Brian James combined their knowledge with local filmmaker Larry Wordsworth to produce the film. Other members of the Young Short Film Group helped out with the graphics and some of the camera work. The editing of the film was expertly car- ried out by Grahame Ragg of Forbes. Copies of the DVD can be purchased from the Lambing Flat Folk Museum in Campbell Street. The museum also has two other DVDs for sale showing historical scenes of Young from years gone by. Rising from the Flats and several other Historical DVDs are available from the Young Museum in Campbell Street priced from $15 to $20. Phone 6382 2248 for fur- ther details. This year the exhibition is being held at Young Town Hall to cater for the big art element of the exhibition, a change from the former fine art category. This year the exhibition, sponsored by the Young and District Arts Council, has already attracted around 100 entries from throughout the district The exhibition officially opens at 7pm on Friday night. The $5 entry includes door prizes and supper. The exhibition will run over four days from Thursday March 7 (10am- 4pm) to Sunday, March 10 (10am-3pm). THE short film “Rising from the Flat –From Gold to Glory” will be shown again atthe Southern Cross Cinema during theLambing Flat Festival.
