R. D. Martin, on Hillsboro StreetSaturday night, was bllt one of aseries of fatal and near—fatal acci-dents that havc happened on’thatthoroughfare. The series will con-tinue with increasing frequency astime goes by unless drastic steps aretaken to prevent this wanton wasteof life.

There have been two killed iiifront of State College in as manyyears, the last a student. The otherwas a negro laborer, who was rundown by a motorist who spccded onhis way, never to be caught. Two years ago a senior was run

down as he alighted from a streetcar on registration day. He spentmonths in a hospital, and is stillslightly dcrangcd.

Since that time. at. least four oth—ers have bccil confined to the. hos—pitals as results of wrecks, while al-most countless students have beenslightly bruised or had very narrowescapes.

During the last five years therehave. been several accidents, some ofthem fatal, on Ilillsbol-o Strcct.from St. Mary's west.

The. latest fatality was the faultof no one in particular, but. the faultof circumstances in general. Martinwould ordinarily have b'a-n fairlysafe iii looking out to his left foroncoming cars as he started for thestrcct car, as he was nearly a blockfrom the barricade across the op-posite side of the street. The motor-ist would ordinarily have been onthe right of the street in that dis-tance.

This is the first iatal'accident reported from this College.but many of the students have beenconfined to hospitals on account of,injuries or sickness. These studentshavo received their injuries fromauto accidents. football games, andother sources. lState is not alone in reporting:many accidents, for there have beentw0 Carolina students killed and sev-eral injured at both Wake Forestland Davidson. All institutions should stress safe-ty among their students. so in thefuture similar accidents will not hap-pen. LONGER DANCE HOURS\Vhat can be done concerning thehours of the dances given on theState College campus? Is it rightthat all dancing hours on the campusbe from 9:00 to 12:00? Should wehave the same. hours for dancing hereas We are accustomed to when of!the campus? iFor some time the dancing situa-lion here has ‘been very unsettled.and from the opinions and discus-.sions among those students who at-tend the dances it is obvious that'they are not satisfied. Only a veryifew dances with the exception ofthose. held on Saturday nights have:the hours front 9:00 to 12:00: in-lstead. they are from 9:00 to 1:00.and on special occasions from 9:00to 2:00.Hours such as these are customaryto the students in their home towns,

and naturally they have become ac-.customed to them. When we are'here at school we must stop dancesat 12:00, which gives us, including:intermission. about two hours toidam-c. since the functions here doinot llcgin until around 10:00 o'clock.Only recently, during the Thanks-giving dances, we recall that as soonas 12:00 o'clock came the dance wastransferred from the gym to the Yar-borougli Hotel, where the studentshad to pay an additional fee. That's what Howard D. Egohad in mind during the time ofhis early schooling at GrandIsland College. It was activelydeveloped during 1919-21 whenhe worked nights in at Lawrencepower plant while completing thework for his B. S. in Engineer-ing at Kansas University.

Ego doesn’t scorn the well-known dictum of Socrates—“Know thyself." But he getsmore of a kick out of the practi-cal upplication of“Knpw others.”

Today—five years after en-rolling in the WestinghouseGraduate Students’ Course—hedirectly controls a staff of fiftypersons. And he’s responsible
