Heidelberg University Examination Rules and Regulations for the Master's Degree Programme in

– Specific Section – Slavic and East European Studies

of 14 March 2016

On the basis of § 32 of the State Law of Baden-Württemberg on Higher Education (Landeshochschulgesetz - LHG), last modified by the third Act on the Amendment of Higher Education Law (Drittes Hochschulrechtsänderungsgesetz - 3. HRÄG) dated 01 April 2014 (GBI. of 08 April 2014, p. 99), the senate of Heidelberg University issued the following examination rules and regulations - specific section - for the Master's degree programme in Slavic and East European Studies on 08 March 2016.

Approved by the President on 14 March 2016.

§ 1 Applicability of the General Section The general section of the current version of the Heidelberg University examination rules and regulations for the Master's degree programmes in Modern Languages and Literary Studies at the Faculty of Modern Languages form an integral part of these examination rules and regulations.

§ 2 Subject of the academic programme The Master’s degree programme Slavic and East European Studies looks at the present state, and historical development, of Slavic languages, literature, culture and societies. The Slavic languages comprise Old Church Slavonic, Bulgarian, Macedonian, Serbian, Croatian, Bosnian, Slovene (= the South Slavic languages), Czech, Slovak, Upper and Lower Sorbian, Polish, Kashubian (= the West Slavic languages), Russian, Belorussian, Ukrainian (= the East Slavic languages), and the now extinct Elbe and Baltic Slavic languages (Polabic, Pomeranian, and Slovincian). In Heidelberg, students may enrol for any combination of all three subfields (East, West and South Slavic). If the specialisation is East European History, one of the chosen Slavic languages must be Russian. Students can choose from the following languages: Russian, Polish, Czech, Serbian/Croatian and Bulgarian. The degree programme builds on a previously earned B.A. in Slavic studies or a comparable degree programme in East European studies (at least 50% option respectively) that covers the chosen specialisation.

Option 1: Specialisation literary studies. If the specialisation is on literary studies,

Please note that this document is a non-binding convenience translation. Only the German version of the document entitled "Prüfungsordnung der Universität Heidelberg für den Master-Studiengang – Besonderer Teil – Slavische und Osteuropäische Studien", dated 14 March 2016 [published in the President’s bulletin (Mitteilungsblatt des Rektors) of 30 March 2016, p. 239ff] has legal validity.

the entire scope of Slavic Literary Studies, including cultural and comparative questions, will be covered in the two chosen Slavic languages. This focus also offers students the opportunity to develop individual fields of their choice. All courses in the programme are research-oriented.

Option 2: Specialisation linguistics. Linguistic research methods and their application in research into past and present Slavic languages will be the focus of the specialisation on linguistics. For the Master’s degree programme, two of the following fields can be chosen as the area of application: linguistics of Russian, Polish, Czech, Bulgarian, or Croatian Studies (or Serbian Studies as an alternative to Croatian Studies) taking relevant sociocultural conditions of the Slavic language communities into account. This focus includes both the theoretical and practical domains of Slavic linguistics.

Option 3: Specialisation East European history. The specialisation East European History focuses on the history of the Slavic language area with special consideration of the history of the Russian and Soviet empires. Historiographical methods and theories are tested and discussed using research-oriented case studies which will qualify students to independently work on scientifico-historical topics by critically analysing information and also prepare them for information-oriented professions and careers in the cultural sciences. East European History as a focus can only be chosen with a language combination including Russian and one further Slavic language (Bulgarian, Croatian, Polish, Serbian, or Czech).

Option 4: Two specialisations for selection. This alternative can be chosen if only one Slavic language was learnt during the Bachelor’s degree programme, or if a combination of two focuses is desired. Option 4 allows students to freely select two of the three focuses (literary studies, linguistics, East European history). Furthermore, basic knowledge in one further Slavic language will be taught or knowledge of a second Slavic language obtained through a Bachelor’s degree will be extended.

Depending on prior knowledge, the subsidiary subject Slavic and East European Studies provides introductory level (option 2) or advanced (option 1) exposure to a Slavic language and a general overview of past and present Slavic languages.

§ 3 Programme structure and possible combinations (1) The academic programme is structured in accordance with § 3, para. 3, item

2 of the general section of the Master's Examination Rules and Regulations. The required modules and the corresponding courses and lectures for the major subject are listed in Appendix 1.

(2) The Master's degree programme Slavic and East European Studies can be

studied as a part-time degree.

(3) Generally, any subject may be chosen as the minor subject, provided that the respective Master's-level programme is offered. The programme cannot

be combined with the minor subject Slavic and East European Studies.

(4) The required modules and the corresponding courses and lectures for the minor subject are listed in Appendix 2. Option 1 can only be selected in the minor subject if philological knowledge was gained in a previous Bachelor’s degree programme. This decision is made by the examinations board.

§ 4 Admission requirements for the Master's examination In accordance with § 13, paragraph 2 of the general section, students seeking admission to the Master's thesis must also provide certificates confirming that they have successfully completed the modules and courses set forth in Appendix 1, amounting to 48 credits.

§ 5 Master's examination The Master's examination consists of the examination components completed during the course of study in accordance with the Appendices of the Examination Rules and Regulations, the Master’s thesis and the final written examination. Students must select different topics for the Master’s thesis and the written final examination in consultation with the examiners. If candidates select two compulsory elective modules in Option 4, the topic of the Master's thesis must be chosen from the range of topics covered in the one module while the topic of the final examination must be chosen from the range of topics covered in the other module.

§ 6 Coming into force (1) These Examination Rules and Regulations become effective on the first day

of the month following their publication in the President’s bulletin (Mitteilungsblatt des Rektors). At this point, they supersede the Heidelberg University Examination Rules and Regulations - Specific Section - for the Master’s degree programme in Slavic Studies, dated 21 July 2011 (President’s bulletin dated 30 August 2011, p. 891), last amended on 18 April 2012 (President’s bulletin dated 21 May 2012, p. 411).

(2) Students who are already enrolled in the Master's degree programme in

Slavic Studies at Heidelberg University while these examination rules and regulations come into force may apply for application of the former regulations. This extension is only valid for a period of six semesters.
