Markets: drivers of economic activity

�Since the 19th century the markets have been the urban promoters of commerce, for themselves and for the surrounding commerce.

�In the 80s, the strong introduction in our country of the new �In the 80s, the strong introduction in our country of the new channels of distribution, especially the supermarkets, led to the markets entering into crisis.

�The creation of the Municipal Institute with a Plan of modernisation, had the aim of creating a model of urban commerce of proximity, with social cohesion and as economic drivers, so that they didn’t fall in decline as in other cities of Europe.

�During these years, 24 processes of remodelling and modernisation have been carried out, and 4 others are underway.

o 3,215 direct jobs + 720o increase in the turnover: 20%

and 25%o increase of visitors : 30% and

80%o maintain and increase hundreds

of shops around the market

It is foreseen to preserve 1,285 jobs and to create 380 more.
