The Ninth Commandment

The Ninth Commandment“You shall not covet your neighbor’s

wife.”

“…or husband.”This commandment urges us to cultivate the virtue of purity and chastity. It opposes the sin of lust. Related to the Sixth Commandment in that both commandments involve the sin of adultery.Whereas the Sixth Commandment involves the sinful activity, the Ninth Commandment involves sinful thoughts and desires.

The Ninth Commandment“You shall not covet your neighbor’s

wife.”

Jesus taught about controlling one’s sexual desire or not allowing sexual appetite to take complete hold of one’s reason that will eventually cause him/her to be lustful.

Jesus, in His public ministry, emphasized that our thoughts and attitudes determine the commission of lustful behaviors.

Sins to avoid: a) Lust -very strong sexual desire for someone.

b) Impure thoughts – dirty mind or green minded

wife.” Virtue to acquire:a) Purity of intension for someone

b) Chastity -the state or practice of refraining from extramarital, or especially from all, sex intercourse.

moderate or humble estimate of one’s merits, importance etc. (unassuming)

b) Words and emotions are controlled.

c) Prayer

THE NINTH COMMANDMENT“YOU SHALL NOT COVET YOUR NEIGHBOR’S

WIFE.”Lust is a two-way street: someone else’s husband, wife, daughter, brotherAgain, Mt 5: 28“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” (Mt 5:8) ‘Pure in heart’ refers to those who have attuned their intellects and wills to the demands of God’s holiness in the areas of charity, chastity, and love of truth. Chastity refers to purity in heart, mind, and imagination. (CCC 2418)Those who are “pure in heart” strive to attain holiness by being pure in mind and body. By such achievement, looks to every person as a divine reflection of beauty. (CCC 2518-20)

About Modesty Modesty is 1) the quality or virtue of observing

proprieties in speech, dress, and behavior2) “an integral part of temperance…It protects

the intimate center of the person.” (CCC 2521)

3) part of being pure of heart. (CCC 2533)

VIOLATIONS AGAINTS The Ninth Commandment

Switching partners - It seems natural to see celebrities switching partners, within short time of period.

This has unconsciously change the notion of marriage and true love, convincing others the casual engagement in sexual pleasure is the fad, and doing it is normal.

Negative notion of marriage and love are young people who are most exposed to mass media.

Perhaps for them , it is easy to enter and leave a relationship; thus, faithfulness and stability which are characteristics of true love are seen as less valuable.
