    Summary of Changes

    This revision of “Engineering WEStation User’s Guide” (U0-8200) has beenupdated to include information related to software release 8.5. These changesinclude the following:

    • Section 2 added to the Definition of Terms table, added a WEStation Usersection, and changed the Command Prompter example.

    • Section 3 changed the WDPF Directory Structure and provided new figureexamples that reflect changes in the directory structures through theWDPF InitTool andWDPF Admin Tool. The Directory Navigator and theQuery/Download were deleted (Query/Download is now part of theWDPFAdmin Tool).

    • Section4 added the Software Server Configuration and new figure examples toreflect the changes in the directory structures.

    • Section 8 provided directory structure changes for adding/removing a username or a user level. TheWDPF Admin Tool will access and create/modify theusers’ menus. BASE Security Parameters were also added.

    Section 1. Introduction

    1-1. Overview

    The Engineering WEStation (also known as the Software Development Statio(SDS)) provides an environment for the development and maintenance ofapplication and system software. Programs, data, and configuration files canretrieved from the Software Server WEStation for the purpose of creating andmaintaining the system configuration. Programs and files can also be retrievethe purpose of developing and maintaining software applications (such as prodiagrams created using the Graphics Builder) and software for other drops(Operator WEStation, Log Server WEStation, and so forth). The EngineeringWEStation (EWS) is often combined on the same WEStation as the Software Seto make up the SS/EWS drop (also known as the SS/SDS).

    In its initial mode, the Engineering WEStation can be used as an OperatorWEStation. All of the functionality of an Operator WEStation is available on thEngineering WEStation. See“Operator WEStation User’s Guide” (U0-8100) formore information on Operator WEStation functions.

    Term Definition

    Directory A special file used to logically group files and other directories.

    Download Process by which a file is copied from the primary Software Server totarget drop and is then assigned the permissions and ownership speciby a queryfile.

    File The basic unit in the data organization that resides on tape or diskstorage. A file is identified by its path name and can contain for exampdata, source, or executable programs.

    File server A computer that provides users of a local area network with access tshared data and program files. For the WDPF system, the SoftwareServer WEStation is the file server.

    File system A collection of files and directories that, when set into a logicalhierarchy, compose an organized, structured set of information.

    Mounted filesystem

    A file system that exists on a remote file server’s disk but can be accessas though its files are on the user’s local workstation’s disk.

    Query Process by which files on a Primary Software Server that are designaby queryfiles for a target drop are compared against the files on the tardrop’s disk.

    Queryfile File that describes what source files on a Software Server should be otarget drop. This file describes the destination for a file and itspermissions and ownership download.

    Path name A fully specified file name that tells the executing command whichdirectories or, in some cases, which device to search to find the desifile or directory.

    To list a path name in a command entry, the user enters the name of edirectory within the path in descending hierarchical order. Eachdirectory must be separated by a slash (/). The following exampledescribes a file,config.dat, contained in directory,lab, whose parentdirectory isusr1 that is the top-most (or root) directory.

    Once the user creates a new file or directory, its path name remains fixunless the user renames or moves that file or directory to a new path

    Script File A text file that contains a sequence of operating system commands. Shscript files are used to simplify repetitive tasks and the execution ofsyntactically sensitive commands.

    Software ServerBackup

    The process of the Primary Software Server’s files being copied to thBackup Software Server. SeeSection 4 for more information onredundant Software Servers.

    Software ServerDisk Reconciliation

    The process of newer files on a Backup Software Server being copiedthe Primary Software Server upon the initialization of the BackupSoftware Server. SeeSection 4 for more information on redundantSoftware Servers.

    Target Directory Destination for a file on the target drop.

    Target Drop Drop to which files are being downloaded. Also, it is the drop on which thuser has performed a query.

    2-4. Accessing the Engineering WEStationThe initial Engineering WEStation display is the same as an Operator WEStadisplay with the addition of one icon (seeFigure 2-1). Selecting the EngineeringWEStation login icon opens aLogin window through which the user may log in tothe Engineering WEStation environment (seeSection 2-4.1).

    2-4.1. Logging in

    Use the following procedure to login and access the Engineering WEStationfunction:

    1. Open the Engineering WEStation login icon (seeFigure 2-1).

    2. The Login window appears (seeFigure 2-2).

    A trailing space after a username isnot validfor software release 8.4 and later (forexample, “user4 ” is valid for Solaris, butnotfor a WEStation username).

    Usernames are identified via the WDPF Admin Tool (seeSection 8).

    4. Enter the user’s password in thePassword: entry field. For security reasons, thepassword is not echoed (does not appear in the field).

    Note

    It is recommended that the password be at least sixcharacters long and combine upper-case letters,lower-case letters and possibly numbers and specialcharacters (for example, # or ~). However, only thefirst eight characters of a password are read; anyremaining characters are ignored. See the applicableoperating system documentation for moreinformation on password rules.

    5. Select theApply button (or press theReturn key on the keyboard toautomatically selectApply ).

    The message “Attempt Login Request” displays in the footer of theLoginwindow. The entered user name and password are verified against the systusername password data. If the login is successful, the login icon is replacedanother icon that, when opened, presents a menu of Engineering WEStatiofunctions (see figure below). The menu is based on the group to which the belongs. SeeSection 8 for information on adding user groups and menus.

    Note

    An operator event message is sent to the Operator EventLogger indicating which user logged in. See“WEStationHistorian User’s Guide” (U0-8500) for information onOperator Event messages.

    If a .login file was defined for the user, any commands added to thfile will execute upon login (an example may include starting an operatingsystem shelltool at login). The.login file is commonly used to grant auser access to functionality controlled by the$WDPF_HOME/mmi/config/lockout.dat file. If so, the.logoutfile should reset thelockout.dat fileupon logout. SeeSection 8 for more information on the.login and.logout files.

    If the message, “Login attempt failure” displays in thefooter of theLogin window, it could indicate one ofseveral problems: the wrong password was entered;the username is unknown to the system; the user maybelong to a group not granted access to the window; orthe username could be disabled due to too manyinvalid login attempts. Before contacting the SystemAdministrator, select theReset button to clear thePassword: field and then re-enter the password.

    When the new icon is selected, the top-level Engineering WEStation menu dispas shown inFigure 2-3.

    The Engineering WEStation menus are configurable by the project, but a typiconfiguration (as shown in the examples in this manual) is supplied with thestandard release. Menu access is determined by the user’s group when the uadded to the system. Users should be segregated into groups according to theiof access to functionality. One Engineering WEStation menu should then be crefor each group. The System Administrator determines whether or not these grare hierarchical. SeeSection 8 for more information on adding a username, a ulevel, and user menus to the system.

    The Download Configuration to Drops function allows the user to download thconfiguration files and the data files (located on the Software Server) onto the tadrops. (The “Query /Download” function is now contained in the “DownloadConfiguration to Drops” function.)

    The software configured for the drop determines which icons will display on tEngineering WEStation at start-up. The Engineering WEStation icon is definethelogin.iconfile that was created in the OpenWindows icon editor (thelogin.iconfile is configurable by the user and is found in the /export/wdpf/ rel/data/sds/wesusr/config/icon[.drop###]/ directory on the Software Server and in the/usr/wdpf/sds/config/icondirectory on the target drop). For more information on usinthe icon editor, see the applicable OpenWindows documentation.

    2-4.2. Changing a Password

    The Change Password function allows users to change their system passwordlocal Engineering WEStation.

    To change a password, follow the steps below:

    1. SelectAdministration on the top-level Engineering WEStation menu (seefigure below).

    As a security precaution against leaving a passwordaccount open for another user to change thepassword, the Change Password function has a timelimit assigned to it by the System Administrator. Ifthe user is changing a password and time expires, theChange Password process must be redone. SeeSection 2-5 for more information on the ChangePassword time limit.

    2-4.3. Logging out

    When finished working with the Engineering WEStation functions, it isrecommended that the user log out. To log out of the Engineering WEStationfollow the steps below:

    1. Select theAdministration button from the top-level Engineering WEStationmenu (see figure below).

    Applications that are still running when the user logs out are given the chato exit while either saving the data or discarding it, depending on the typeapplication running. For example, a text editor may write all unsaved chanto a file. An application such as the calculator will simply exit.

    Note

    Processes are terminated based on generations.When a user logs out, all remaining applicationsdirectly started from the user menu are terminated.Next, any remaining “children” processes startedfrom that first generation are terminated. Thiscontinues until all generations have been examinedand terminated.

    Caution

    It is not recommended that the user shutdown hisprocesses by simply logging out. It is recommendedthat the user orderly quit each application prior tologging out since the time limit given by the logoutprocess may not always accommodate the shutdowntime needed by an application. In addition, not allapplications may gracefully exit when terminated inthis manner.

    If a user opens a shelltool window, runs anapplication in the background, and then logs out, thebackground process will be terminated. However, ifthe user opens a shelltool, runs an application in thebackground, and then exits the shelltool beforelogging out, the process will not be terminated. Seethe applicable operating system documentation formore information on running background tasks.

    If a .logoutfile is defined for the user, any commands contained in tfile will be executed when the user logs out. SeeSection 2-4.1 for moreinformation on the.logout file.

    An operator event message is sent to the Operator Event Logger indicatinwhich user logged off. In addition to the normal message format, one of thfollowing reasons will be given as to why the user logged out:

    • Reason: Normal logout — The user simply logged out.• Reason: Hide login request — Used with the membrane keyboard to

    indicate that the system is not in CONFIG mode. For more informationthe membrane keyboard, see “Operator WEStation User’s Guide”(U0-8100).

    The Engineering WEStation configuration will be performed through two utilitthat are provided with the WDPF release and appear initially as two icons onWEStation screen. These are theWDPF Init Tool and theWDPF Admin Tool.

    Refer to the following sections for instructions on configuring EngineeringWEStations. Refer to “Defining and Configuring WEStations” (U0-8300) foradditional information on using the Init and Admin Tool.

    2-5.1. Using the WDPF Init Tool

    Use the following procedure to enter and use the WDPF Initialization Tool.

    1. Use the mouse to select the WDPF Init Tool icon from the EngineeringWEStation screen.

    2. Figure 2-6 provides an example of the WEStation Initialization Tool mainwindow that will display on the screen. This window’s contents will actuallydepend upon the software packages selected in the system.Table 2-3 definesbriefly the functions available through this window. Access the Help menu it“Defining Configuration” for additional information on window functions.

    Displays theunique hardware address for each Ethernet port forthe drop that is selected in the Drop Configuration list. Format is sixtwo-digit hexadecimal numbers separated by colons.     The Engineering WEStation menus and windows are designed to give users access to such WDPF functions as drop configuration, system administrationhighway control.

    The Engineering WEStation menus are configurable by the project. Menu accedetermined by the user’s group when the user is added to the system. SeeSection8for information on adding a username and a user level.

    A typical menu configuration is supplied with the standard WEStation release.all procedures described in this manual, the examples use the menus from thtypical configuration. Even though user-defined menus may differ in content fthe Westinghouse-supplied menus, the basic use of the menu system remainsame. To describe the menu levels, three terms are used:

    • Top-level Menu defines the first level (or page) of the menu system.• Parent Menudefines the menu which is one level higher than the current me• Child Menu defines a menu which is one level lower than the current menSee “Operator WEStation Configuration Manual” (U0-8110) for information oncreating menus.

    Depending on how the menus are configured, one Engineering WEStation mmay provide access to the operating system functions (such as the text editocommand tool) and other third-party vendor programs. On the standardWestinghouse menus, this access is gained by selecting theTools button on thetop-level menu (seeFigure 2-8).

    To gain access to a command line, select theCommand Line Access button on theTools menu (seeFigure2-9). Depending on the user’s software revision, accessa command tool may take the SHC off the highway (software releases prior to8.3.5). If the SHC is taken off the highway, the current drop cannot receive poor broadcast points. This is done to prevent erroneous data from being sent onhighway.

    The Command Prompter window allows the user to define arguments for runnicommand. The Command Prompter displays a command’s name and the listarguments that apply to that command. A command may still be executed fromoperating system command tool; however, the Command Prompter simplifiesprocess since the user may not know the proper syntax or options or may nogranted access to a command line. The user can also request the man pagescommand from the Command Prompter. See applicable operating systemdocumentation for more information on man pages.

    The Command Prompter is found on severalEngineering WEStation menus. For illustrationpurposes, the steps below show one example of howthe Command Prompter may be used.

    The Command Prompter presents the arguments and options for a commandfollowing way:

    Check box = Only used with command options. Allows the user to chooswhether or not to select the option. Selecting the check boxtoggles the active/inactive state of the option. Check boxesnot used with required command arguments.

    Option = Text preceded by a hyphen.

    Optionentryfield

    = Entry field following an option label and colon. Allows the useto enter parameters for the option (such as file names). (NoNot all options have an entry field.)

    Requiredargument

    The Command Prompter inFigure 2-13 displays the options,-f source_filename,-o output_filename, -p SPD, -v, and-h each preceded by a check box. The -f, -and -p options have an entry field for the user to enter the appropriate file namThe user can modify all of the default values shown inFigure 2-13.

    If the user were to run the bgdesc.translate command from the command linethe -f and -o options, the command might read:

    Section 3. Modifying and DownloadingConfiguration Files

    3-1. Section Overview

    The Engineering WEStation is the plant engineer’s primary tool for configurinWDPF system. It provides an environment for the development, maintenance,installation of configuration files. Programs, data, and configuration files can bretrieved from the Software Server for the purpose of creating and maintainingsystem configuration and WDPF applications. Most interaction with the SoftwServer’s files is done through the WDPF Init Tool and the WDPF Admin Tool (s“Defining and Configuring WEStations” (U0-8300).

    Note

    The Query/Download function is now part ofthe WDPF Admin Tool (see“Defining andConfiguring WEStations” (U0-8300)).

    This section provides an overview of the programs and procedures needed tomodify configuration files on the Engineering WEStation. Before discussing thprograms, an explanation of the WDPF directory structure is given.

    The following topics are included in this section:

    • WDPF directory structure (Section 3-2).• Configuration Control function (Section 3-3).

    To understand the WDPF software directory structure, two drops must be discu— the Engineering WEStation and the Software Server.

    The Engineering WEStation and the Software Server have a direct relationshipSoftware Server provides storage (in the form of exported filesystems via the NThe Network File System) for the archived application software and systemsoftware, and associated configuration files. The Engineering WEStation imp(that is, mounts) these Software Server filesystems and provides the tools anddisk space for modifying these files during development. Mounted filesystemsappear to the user as files and directories on the local workstation’s disk, whefact, the files and directories are on a remote Software Server’s disk.

    The sections below describe the WDPF directories that are shown inFigure 3-1.

    /export/wdpf

    This directory contains all of the Software Server files. On the Software Serveexists as a disk partition, named/export/wdpf by the system load procedures (se“WEStation Software Load Kit” (U0-8001-x.x) for more information).

    /wdpf

    On the Engineering WEStation orSS/EWSdroptype,/wdpf should be used tonavigate the mounted Software Server’s files.

    /export/wdpf/rel/ssw

    This directory contains a snapshot of the released system software and is the sof the initial download to all drops. It is also the source of the periodic revisionquery of all drops.

    The data in the/rel directory is either loaded directly from a release media, or iloaded after modifications to the release are verified to be operational in adevelopment directory. To ensure integrity of the Software Server’s/wdpf/rel/sswdirectory, the Engineering WEStations should have read-only access to thisdirectory (seeSection 4-4). Therefore, changes to/wdpf/rel must be made by the“superuser” who is logged-in on the Software Server. To make a modification torel,the System Administrator should tightly control who has login access and superaccess to the Software Server. It is highly recommended that only the superusallowed write-access to/rel/ssw (see the applicable operating systemdocumentation for more information on superuser).

    This directory may be accessed on the Engineering WEStations via /wdpf/rel/ssw.

    /export/wdpf/rel/data

    This directory tree contains all of a project’s configuration data, including itsSystem Point Directory (SPD), the drop definitions entered on the WDPF Init Tothe subsystem customizatons performed via the WDPF Admin Tool’s “DefineSoftware Configuration” screens, and the WDPF Admin Tool’s “Maintain ProjData” screens, such as graphics, reports, and DPU source files.

    As such, a project should undertake procedures toback up the directory treefrequently. Should disk corruption occur, the WEStation Software can be reloafrom CD, but the user is responsible for creating a backup of this data area.

    This directory tree is populated during the “install” operation on the WDPF AdmTool. Information entered in the WDPF Init Tool and in the WDPF Admin Tool“define” windows is retrieved and formatted into configuration files understoodthe WEStation online subsystems. Once these files are created, they may bedownloaded to the target WEStations via the WDPF Admin Tool.

    This directory may be accessed on the Engineering WEStation’s via/wdpf/rel /config.

    /export/wdpf/sccs

    This directory houses WDPF files for the operating system SCCS (source cocontrol system) function. This directory structure “mirrors” the directory structurin /export/wdpf/rel/data, such that a user can check out, modify, and check inSCCS files via eitherrel or a development directory tree while maintaining systesoftware integrity. File checkout/checkin is done via the WDPF Admin Tool’s“Maintain Project Data” screen.

    This directory may be accessed on Engineering WEStation via/wdpf/sccs.

    Most SCCS interaction is performed via the WDPF Admin Tool.The ConfiguratControl Utility described in this section would be most useful in configurationcontrol of items not under the framework of the WDPF Admin Tool.

    The Source Code Control System (SCCS) is a utility that is provided with thestandard operating system. It is used to maintain software version control overmodifiable files, thus preserving system integrity. The WDPF system providesuser interface to SCCS through theConfiguration Control window (seeFigure 3-2).

    This utility only provides an interface to SCCS. Formore information on SCCS, see the applicableoperating system documentation.

    When using the command line to invoke SCCScommands, those users with redundant SoftwareServersmust use the$WDPF_HOME/sds/bin/wdpf_sccs command. Upon startup of anEngineering WEStation, this command is designedto work on both Software Servers, if a redundantconfiguration is used.

    TheConfiguration Control window allows users to take files out of source controedit them, and then place them back in source control with an updated revisionumber. Files can be retrieved from SCCS in one of two ways:

    • Read-only mode — allows the user to view the contents of the file, but nochanges can be made. With this option, the file is not “checked out” of soucontrol so it does not need to be saved and checked back in to source coSeeSection 3-3.1.

    • Write mode — the file is “checked out” of source control, and the user can mchanges to the file in a system text editor (see applicable vendor documentfor more information on the system text editor). SeeSection 3-3.2.

    Once changes have been made to the file, it is “checked in” to SCCS. The Sutility saves the changes and assigns a new revision number to the file. Whrelease tape is made of the system software, the most current version (orspecified version known to work) of the files can be taken from source codcontrol.

    Interaction with Software Servers

    If redundant Software Servers are available (on-line) in the system, theConfiguration Control utility will keep the primary and secondary SoftwareServers’ SCCS information identical. For example, if a file is checked out of SCon one Software Server, it will also be checked out of the backup Software SeIf the Software Server then swaps primary and backup modes, the user will beto check in any changes made, although the check in will occur on a differentprimary Software Server. If and when the other primary Software Server comback on-line in secondary mode, its disk will be updated to reflect the check-i

    There is a danger tonot using the Configuration Control utility or thewdpf_sccscommand line with redundant Software Servers. The following example illustrathis danger:

    • The system has redundant Software Servers.• A file is signed out of SCCS via thesccs command instead of via the

    Configuration Control utility or thewdpf_sccscommand.

    • The periodic backup of the primary Software Server’s disk to backup occurdescribed inSection 4.

    • The user signs the file back in via thesccs command on the primary SoftwareServer. The file is still signed out on the backup Software Server’s disk.

    • A failover of the Software Servers occurs before the next periodic backup ofprimary Software Server to the backup Software Server. Now the new primSoftware Server will show the file as being signed out of SCCS. If the oldprimary Software Service is “healthy” enough to become a backup SoftwaServer, the disk reconcile will not solve the problem. The user will notunderstand why a file was checked-in is still seen as out-for-edit.

    If the user has checked out a file for edit and decides that the changes are no loneeded, the edit function can be cancelled. The last saved version of the file remain in source control. To do this, follow the steps below.

    4-2. Introduction to the Software Server

    The purpose of the Software Server WEStation is to maintain and distribute fi(software and data) to all drops throughout a WDPF system. In addition toexecutable, configuration, and data files, the Software Server may maintainconfiguration control of source files. Modifications to the source files should bcontrolled and tracked through the WDPF Admin Tool,Configuration Controlwindow or thewdpf_sccscommand (used with redundant Software Servers) onEngineering WEStation to the operating system source code control tool. SeeSection 3 for more information on theConfiguration Control window.

    The Software Server contains a list of the software and data that should be on drop within the system. Periodically, the Software Server can perform a file reviquery, which identifies mismatches between its “officially endorsed” versions of fiand what is actually on the system’s drops. Through the Download ConfiguratioDrops function on the WDPF Admin Tool, files can be downloaded to correct anidentified mismatches. See“Defining and Configuring WEStations” (U0-8300) fomore information on the Query/Download operation.

    The Software Server can perform in either a single unit configuration or as aredundant pair. A redundant pair provides an additional level of assurance thaintegrity is maintained. SeeSection4-3 for more
