Tim was an 8 year old boy who had a rare medical condition. Nevada Medicaid denied him coverage for a medical procedure, because they deemed it experimental. NLS took the case to appeal the denial of medical services. Staff attorneys talked to the doctors and learned that the medical treatment is not considered experimental in the field – it was merely offered by a limited number of hospitals. NLS appealed the denial, got the administrative hearing scheduled, and paid substantial fees for two doctors to come to Nevada and testify at Tim’s hearing. The doctors’ testimony made all the difference, and the Administrative Law Judge overturned the denial. The client was able to take her son for treatment, including three surgeries and a transplant. Tim is alive and well today. Without treatment, he likely would have died after a few years spent in terrible pain. The legal aid attorneys can say they literally saved a life that day – achieving an enormous, life-altering outcome for Tim and his family.

Maria, a 76 year old disabled widow underwent hip surgery. She then required additional surgery due to a health condition. When Maria visited our office she was very concerned that she would not survive the second surgery due to health complications. Our office expedited the completion of a Will, Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care, and a Financial Power of Attorney so that if Maria became incapacitated or didn’t survive her estate could avoid probate.

Sometimes access to justice demands being able to consult a lawyerwhen one faces a complex legal issue. That means legal aid attorneys, pro bono volunteers, and increased funding.
