ODONTOMA

. It means a growth in which both the epi the l ia l andmesenchymal cel ls exhibi t com plete dif ferent iat ion,with the

resul t that the func t ional ameloblasts and odontoblasts formenamel and dentin.This enamel and dentin are usual ly laid

down in an abnorm al pattern because the organizat ion if the

odon togenic cel ls fai l to reach a no rmal state of

morphodif ferent iat ion.

Some utho rs believe that odo ntoma represnts ahamartomatous malformation rather than neoplasm

It refers to any tum our o f the odonto genic or ig in .

ETIOLOGY :-

Unknown.

Local t rauma or tumou r may lead to p roduc t ion o f such

a lesio n. No predi lic t ion for occurrence of odon toma in part icular

si tes o f o ral cavity.

Occu r with g reat frequency between centra l inciso rs or

dis tal to maxi l lary th ird molar. Either inheri ted o r due to a mutant gene.
