The Pinal County Sheriff’s Office would like to alert county residents of a possible phone scam involving individuals posing as law enforcement officers. At approximately 9:00 a.m., a citizen living in Casa Grande received a phone call from a man claiming to be a deputy with the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office. The caller informed the woman that she had failed to report for jury duty and a fine was issued. The woman indicated

she didn’t remember receiving a summons to report for jury duty. The woman’s husband joined the conversation and asked the caller to identify himself by name and badge number. At that point, the caller hung up and did not call again. The couple contact PCSO to report the incident and deputies traced the number provided to a fax number in Jamaica; a common practice used in other phone scams designed to extort money from unsuspecting victims. “We work tirelessly

each day to preserve the public trust given to law enforcement by the citizens we’re sworn to protect,” Sheriff Paul Babeu said. “When someone poses as a law enforcement officer in an attempt to commit a criminal act, all of us are taken back. Don’t become a victim. As a citizen, ask questions and insist the officer identifies himself/herself as required by law, just as these residents did.” According to the Jury

Commissioner and Clerk of the Superior Court, Chad Roche, “It is disheartening that there are criminals who will take every advantage to harm the public. This is particularly heinous because it impacts one of the highest calls to duty a citizen can answer and that is Jury Service. Equal access to justice and providing qualified Jurors to the Judiciary is something that we at the COSC take very seriously. If you receive

a call requesting your credit card information to pay a fine for Failure to Appear, alert the proper authorities immediately.” Norma Cruz, Associate Jury Commissioner stated that, “In Pinal County you will receive a Jury Summons by mail to appear for the Juror selection process. We select for all Superior Court trials, Grand Jury and all eight Justice Courts. You will not receive a phone call by a

PCSO officer for Failure to Appear, so anyone purporting to be a PCSO Officer collecting fines on our behalf is not a legitimate call.” To verify that your name is in the current Jury pool, you can call the Jury Department directly at 520-866-5311. You may learn more about serving as a Juror visiting our website at PinalCountyAZ.gov/COSC and click on the link at the left named Jury Information.

By Chase KampCopper Area News The ballots have been cast and the results are in for the 2012 Pinal County primaries on Aug. 28. While some prominent incumbents emerged without a scratch, there

were plenty of nail-biters and surprises as the results rolled in. The newly expanded County Board of Supervisors had a bevy of contenders aiming for its five seats. In the County Board of Supervisors race,

former state Representative Cheryl Chase handily locked up the District 2 Republican nomination, with John Acton coming in distant second. Chase, a former PCSO director, beat out four Republican challengers, aided by her dual campaigning with County Sheriff Paul Babeu. District 2 consists of most of unincorporated San Tan Valley. Democratic incumbents Pete Rios (District 1) and David Snider (District 3) each secured their party’s nomination, with Rios defeating Mary Espinoza and Snider running unchallenged. Rios will face Republican Gem Cox, who defeated Jim Montaño, as well as

Paton. Kirkpatrick held the CD-1 seat before she was defeated by Paul Gosar in 2010. Gosar won his bid for the Republican nod in newly formed CD-4, beating out Ron Gould from Lake Havasu City. In LD-8, Ernest Bustamante edged a narrow win for the Democratic nod. On the Republican side, longtime state Representative Frank Pratt won the Republican nomination over Coolidge newcomer TJ Shope. In the Sheriff race,

incumbent Paul Babeu handily won the Republican nod over challengers Tom Bearup, Jack McClaren and Derek Arnson. On the Democratic side, Maricopan Kevin Taylor defeated Glenn Millsaps by a safe margin. For County Assessor, Douglas Wolf defeated Jeffrey Acton and will face unchallenged Democrat Randy Robbins. The majority of votes cast in the primaries were early ballots. Voter turnout inched just above 19 percent.

independent candidate Alicia Bristow. Snider will face Republican Stephen Miller, who won the nod over Tom Hollenbeck, and independent Roberto Almaguer. In District 4, unchallenged Democrat Henry Wade will face Republican Anthony Smith, who edged out challengers Nancy Discher and Fred Mackenzie. Discher showed a slim lead after an initial round of results was posted on the County elections website, but Smith ultimately clinched the victory. District 4 consists of SaddleBrooke, Arizona City and Maricopa. In the northern Pinal District 5, which is made of areas of Apache Junction and Gold Canyon, Republican Todd House defeated three challengers, with Pat Prince running a close second, and will face unchallenged Democrat Maxine Brown. By Frank Smith The San Manuel Miners varsity football team moved to 2–0 on the season by rolling over the Eloy Santa Cruz Dust Devils 49-0 with the Miners posting their second shutout victory in a row. The Miners offense got rolling on their second possession of the first quarter when quarterback Adrian Torres rolled right and hit fullback Shane Kelly with a 14-yard pass into the end zone for the touchdown. The extra point kick by Adrian Diaz was good for a 7–0 lead. The Miners took the opening drive of the second quarter in for a touchdown, moving the ball down field from their own 44-yard line to the Eloy 39 yard line where fullback Colton Smith would take the hand off running the ball up the middle for a 39-yard touchdown run. The extra point kick by Diaz was no good for a 13-0 score midway through the second quarter. The Miners would score again before the half after the Miners defense forced a punt. San Manuel began their drive from their own 25-yard line, this would set up running back John Ruiz three plays into the drive for a 65-yard scamper into the end zone for the touchdown, the two-point conversion was good by running back Ben Quijada for a 21-0 lead late in the second quarter. Corner back Richard Romo intercepted a pass near the end of the half to

stop a drive for the Dust Devils taking the lead into the halftime break. In the third quarter, the Miners began their drive at their own 47 yard line where quarterback Torres would hit tight end Jonathon Croci a few plays later with a 35 yard bomb down to the two yard line to set up Torres with a two yard keeper into the end zone for the touchdown, the extra point kick by Diaz was good for a 28-0 lead early in the third quarter. On the ensuing kickoff, the Miners would recover the ball after it was fumbled by Eloy and recovered by Colton Smith to give San Manuel the short field at the Eloy 27 yard line. On the third play of the drive Ben Quijada took the handoff and sprinted down field 20 yards for the touchdown, the extra point kick by Diaz was good for a 35-0 lead half way through the third quarter. Ben Quijada would score again in the third quarter when the Miners marched the ball down to the Eloy one-yard line from the Eloy 27 yard lined after taking over on downs. Ben Quijada got the call, running the ball in from one yard out for the touchdown; the extra point kick by Diaz was good for a 42-0 score at the end of the third quarter. The AIA imposed Mercy Rule was now in effect, playing with a running clock throughout the remainder of the game. The Miners would score one last time in the fourth quarter, this time it was offensive lineman Danny Quijada who lined up at running back to run the ball up the middle for the two yard touchdown, the extra point kick by Diaz was good for a final score 49-0. The Miners will travel down to Tombstone on Fri. to take on the Yellow Jackets, kick off is slated for 7:00 p.m.

By Frank Smith The San Manuel Junior High Miners football team got off on the right foot to start their season as they shut out the visiting Globe Tigers 16 – 0 on Tuesday August 28. The Miners and the Tigers went scoreless in the first quarter as both defensives held off the offensive drives. It wasn’t until the second quarter when any points were put up on the scoreboard; those points came in the hands of defensive end Antonio Gallego – when he took down the Tigers

quarterback in the end zone picking up two points for the safety. The Miners led 2 – 0 with 1:05 left before the half. The Tigers would have to kick off the ball from their own 20 yard line, the Miners got the ball at the Globe 35 yard line. After a sack and a penalty, the Miners were facing a fourth down situation from the 41 yard line when running back Jose Damien broke free down to the 29 yard line for the first down. The Miners were now racing against the clock as time was winding down in the half. San Manuel

moved the ball down to the six yard line in three plays and line up for one last play with Damien crossing the goal line as the clock read 00 for the touchdown. The two point conversion failed for an 8 – 0 Miners lead at the half. The Miners would score again in the fourth quarter when Damien hit the right side of the offensive line and sprinted nine yards into the end zone with :49 left in the game, the two point conversion was good for a 16 – 0 final score. The Miners will travel to Eloy Santa Cruz today for a 6pm start time.

Junior High Miners shut out Tigers 16–0

By John Hernandez The Mountain Vista Cougars opened their football season at home. The Cougars played the Superior Junior High Panthers and lost 26 to 0. Superior scored on their opening drive and led 6-0. The Cougars then fumbled setting up another touchdown for Superior. Mt. Vista trailed 18–0 and could not recover from the deficit. Mt. Vista settled down in the second half and played some good defense but still could not move the ball offensively. Mt. Vista’s next game is at San Carlos on Wed. Sept. 5 at 6:00pm. The Lady Cougars volleyball season began on Wednesday Aug.29 as they hosted the San Manuel Lady

Miners. In the seventh grade match, San Manuel took the first game 25–14. Mt. Vista came back to win the second game 25 to 16 behind the good serving by Kayla Brown and Mary Yankovich. The Miners took the third game and match defeating Mt. Vista 15–8. In the eighth grade contest, San Manuel led the first match 24–19 before Katie Bruno came up to serve for Mt. Vista. Katie and Mt. Vista stunned the Miners as Katie served seven points in a row winning the match 26–24.Mt. Vista then took the second match 25–21. A third exhibition match was played which the Lady Cougars also won 16–14. The next match for Mt. Vista will be at San Carlos on Sept.5.

On her profile, it said that she was from San Manuel, lived in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii and owned three businesses: K Town Tattoo, Kona Coffee Café and Limited Editions: Hawaii. Since Kailua-Kona was going to be one of my stops in the islands, I told myself that if I happened to run into the Kona Coffee Café or it was located near our hotel, I would stop in and try to meet Trish and do a story about her. On our first day in the quaint and friendly town of Kailua-Kona my wife and I decided to explore and walk along a street near our hotel, the King Kamehameha Resort. The road runs along the beach with shops, bar/restaurants, resorts, and historical buildings on both sides of the street. While walking I glanced into a small mall located by the Kona Inn and saw a sign on a little shop “Kona Coffee Café.” I told my wife that I believed that a lady from San Manuel owned that shop. She told me “you’re crazy.” I then explained to her what I had seen on Facebook. We decided to have coffee there the next morning. The café is located in the Kona Inn Shopping Village. We were greeted by an attractive and persuasive young lady named Carmel. By persuasive I mean she talked us into buying about $150 worth of coffee, chocolate covered macadamia nuts and chocolate covered coffee beans. Carmel let us sample the

different types of coffee and told us about each type of brew. She was very knowledgeable about Kona coffee. I asked her if Trish, the owner, was available and she told me that she did not work on the weekend but would be back on Monday morning. As I was leaving Monday morning by 8:30 a.m. to catch a plane to Maui, it looked bad for being able to get a story. I asked Carmel what time the cafe would be opening on Monday and she said 6:00 a.m. I decided to try and catch Trish in the morning. I would walk from my hotel and have my morning coffee at the café, do the interview and be back to the hotel by 8:00 a.m. A good plan and it actually worked. I met Trish Merschdorf shortly after the first pot of coffee had been brewed. I introduced myself and ordered a cup of medium roast 100% Kona coffee. Trisha told me that she was known as Patty Montoya in San Manuel. She is the daughter of Ralph and Erika Montoya. Her brother and sisters still live in the area and she comes back once in a while to visit friends and family. Friends and family have come out to visit her and she gets to play tour guide. She still keeps in contact with some of her friends and mentioned Jamie Borquez. Trish graduated from San Manuel High School class of 1977. She said, “In 1985 I wanted to move somewhere different; I wanted to get out of San Manuel.” She has now been in Hawaii 27 years. Trish arrived in Hawaii as a single mother. She now owns three businesses. Trish said that she opened a dress shop Limited Editions Hawaii. A year later, they heard that

the Kona Coffee Café was for sale. She decided to buy it. She said, “I never drank a cup of coffee until I bought this shop.” One of her best friends Jon Kunitake owns a coffee plantation “Kunitake Farms”. The café buys its Kona coffee beans from them. The Kunitake Farms is one of the biggest names in Kona coffee. It is located in the heart of Kona coffee country in the art enclave of Holualoa which sits on the mountain slopes above Kailua-Kona. Jon is also one of the founders of the annual Kona Marathon. Trish said, “The coffee business is a lot of fun; you get to meet a lot of really great people.” The third business that Trish owns is K Town Tattoo. It is the number one tattoo and body piercing shop on the island of Hawaii. The featured tattoo artist for the shop is her daughter, Erika Fritts. Erika studied with famed tattoo artist Maxwell Killbourne and worked at Hart & Huntington in Waikiki on the island of Oahu. She also studied Polynesian and Samoan tattoos with Fano an expert in this type of art. Although she can easily customize any type of body art she specializes in Polynesian tribal, realistic, Japanese, bright color work and nature portraits. Her father is Charles (Chuck) Fritts Jr., formerly of San Manuel. She is the mother of one of Trish’s grandkids, PeterPaul. You can see Erika’s work at www.ktowntattoo.com. When I asked about buying a couple of small bags of Kona coffee I mentioned that they were going to be part of a prize for the top finishers of the Oracle Run. She offered to donate them and

By John Hernandez Pinal Rural Fire Rescue celebrated their first anniversary on Sat. Sept. 1 at Fire Station 625 located at 15062 Highway 77 at the north end of Mammoth. Fire Chief Bud Payne said they were also celebrating the news that they are now officially a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Approximately 50 people showed up for the free barbecue and to show their support for Pinal Rural Fire Rescue. Flint Anderson was there and posed for a photo with Fire Chief Bud Payne and Deanna Payne. Anderson was there to thank them for possibly saving his life and to show support. He suffered a stroke a few weeks ago and Pinal Rural were the first responders. They recognized the symptoms right away, started an IV and had a medical helicopter fly him to the hospital. Volunteer firefighters and trainees gave a Jaws of Life demonstration cutting up a vehicle that had been donated to Pinal Rural Fire Rescue by Mammoth Towing. There were youths there that signed up for the Explorer program. Chief Bud Payne and all the volunteers of Pinal Rural Fire Rescue would like to thank the community for their support.

After several weeks of practices including morning practices before school, the Miner Swim Team hosted the first swim meet of the season against St. Augustine Catholic High School. For nearly half of the team, this was their first high school swim meet. With only two returning boys on the team, the very first test for the Miners was the Medley Relay which is the first event. Senior Andy Monfred, who joined the swim team for the first time this season, started off the meet by swimming the backstroke leg of the relay and then handing off to

Freshman Armando Noriega who swam the Breaststroke leg. As the race began, these two swimmers built a lead so large that experienced upperclassmen Wayne Newman and John Bribiescas were never challenged on the Butterfly or Freestyle legs. The Girls Medley Relay team of Amara Apuron, Cierra Austin, Nicole Primero and Jazelle Sanchez easily won the opening event of the girls competition. This group of returning swimmers picked up where they left off last season. As the Meet progressed, returning swimmers John

Miner swimmers open season with a winBribiescas, Wayne Newman, Megan Garcia and Amara Apuron all showed that they were in great shape in the 200 Free and 200 IM. Freshman swimmers Alec Newman (200 Free), Cita Sweeney (200 Free) and Taylor Woods (200 IM) all showed that Miner Swimming has some great depth by finishing second in their first race of the season. Miner swimming has a couple of good sprinters this season. Cierra Austin and Nicole Primero showed that many times the best competition may be a teammate. In both sprints, they were well ahead of the rest of the field. Austin won the 50 Freestyle with a new school record, while Primero won the 100 Freestyle narrowly missing the best time in school history. Armando Noriega won the 100 Butterfly and the 100 Breaststroke, showing that as a freshman he can hold his own against the big boys.

Sophomore Jazelle Sanchez showed that she has what it takes to win the 100 Butterfly. In the distance event (400 Meter Freestyle), Miner swimmers finished first and second, Bribiescas and Alec Newman for the Boys and then Apuron and Sweeney for the girls. The 200 Freestyle Relay was won easily by a strong boys team of Wayne Newman, Alec Newman, Andy Monfred, and Noriega. The girls relay was close, with the team of Primero, Kadi Monfred, Austin, and Sanchez able to narrowly out touch the competition at the finish. Freshman Taylor Woods had a great Backstroke swim for a win. Miners finished off the Meet with wins in both the boys and girls 400 Freestyle Relays. When all was done, the Miner girls won the Meet 81-53, and the Miner boys won the Meet 82-52. Miner swimmers won all six relays at the Meet and 12 out of the 16 individual events. By John Hernandez Sanctuary Massage in Oracle is expanding their services to include exercise classes and educational workshops on health and healing practices. Ramona Willis, owner/operator of Sanctuary Massage and a Licensed Massage Therapist explained that the holidays are swiftly approaching and they would like to encourage people to make a commitment to their health. “We would like to help with massage,

exercise and diet and health information,” she said. Sanctuary Massage has been in operation for over three years. Willis offers: Deep tissue massage, Swedish massage, hot rock therapy (in winter), myotherapy, muscle release techniques, lymphatic massage and drainage, ashiatsu oriental bar therapy and aromatherapy According to Willis, benefits of therapeutic massage include relief of stress and tension, promotes

Because your body is a temple – classes added to scheduletoxin removal and lymph circulation, increased blood circulation, decreases blood pressure, reduces heart rate and relieves inflammation. Massages are available for from 30 minutes to an hour and a half, Willis recommends the hour and a half massage for the most benefit. Willis will be teaching a class on Qigong. Qigong is an ancient (4,000 years) Chinese healing practice with roots in Chinese medicine, exercise and meditative practices. Willis explained it as “basically a breathing exercise using long inhales and exhales.” Qigong is a one-hour class

held every Mon. at 5:30 p.m. at the Sanctuary massage studio at 1995 W. American Avenue. The cost for each class is $5. Each Wed. beginning Sept. 12, 2012, Pilates class will be offered. Cheryl Miller a former ballerina and certified Pilates Instructor will be teaching the class. Miller was licensed in New York and is dedicated to the preservation of Joseph H. Pilate’s classical techniques. Miller says her “focus is on tailoring a system of exercises for each individual that will meet his or her needs, goals, and fitness level just as Pilates intended for his method to be taught.”

The cost of Pilates classes is $50 for six weeks. Besides offering Pilates mat classes at the Sanctuary Massage Studio, she is also available for one on one sessions working with at her private studio in Tucson. For appointments, contact Miller at (520)742-0987. A Food Healing Workshop is being scheduled for the month of Oct. Petra Kleinert will be teaching the workshop. Kleinert is certified in nutritional healing as well as a massage therapist, lifestyle coach, and the owner of Jade Wellness in Tucson. The workshop will introduce students to the

healing properties of food and how improving one’s diet and nutrition can lead to optimum health, energy and happiness. Contact Willis at Sanctuary Massage at (520)896-6539 for more information about the workshop. Willis is a member of the Oracle Women’s Network (OWN) and Sanctuary Massage will be hosting their breakfast meeting on Fri., Oct. 7 at 8:00 a.m. For a massage, class or workshop information, contact Willis at (520)896-6539, [email protected] or SanctuaryMassageStudios.com.

Opportunity to Comment on Lower San Pedro River TMDL

The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ), in accordance with Section 303(d) of the Clean Water Act, has developed a Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) analysis for the San Pedro River from Aravaipa Creek to the Gila River. ADEQ has determined that this reach is impaired for Escherichia coli. A TMDL defines the total amount of a particular constituent or pollutant which can be introduced into a water body without causing an exceedance of state surface water quality standards. The TMDL process enlists the participation of stakeholder groups and other interested parties to assist in identifying possible sources of pollution, to allocate loads of those pollutants in accordance with the objectives of the analysis, and to identify the most reasonable measures that should be implemented in order for the stream to achieve surface water quality standards.ADEQ has conducted a TMDL study for the lower San Pedro River (Aravaipa Creek to the Gila River) to investigate the sources and critical conditions contributing to exceedances of Escherichia coli water quality standards. A TMDL is the determination of the maximum pollutant loading a waterbody can maintain and still meet surface water quality standards. Using the results of this investigation, the agency will work with stakeholders to identify appropriate, affordable, and effective actions necessary to improve water quality and develop a plan to implement these actions. Please join the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) for a public meeting to present results of the investigation at the Central Arizona College – Aravaipa Campus. ADEQ will discuss results of the investigation and reductions called for to attain surface water quality standards. Suggested best management practice implementations will also be addressed.Lower San Pedro River Total Maximum Daily Load public meetingTime: Thursday, September 13, 2012 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.Location: Central Arizona College, Aravaipa Campus, Room E 11580440 East Aravaipa RoadWinkelman, AZ 85292ADEQ will release a draft version of the San Pedro River Escherichia coli TMDL on September 14, 2012 and will accept written comments until 5:00 pm (MST) on October 15, 2012. Fire restrictions announcementarea, after Sept. 1, 2012 Agriculture Burn Permits are again able to be utilized by agriculture property owners and/or lease holders on state and BLM land. It is PRFR policy to help agriculture customers to relieve already overburdened fire fuel areas by providing a Wildland fire engine with crew to stand by during the Agriculture Burn. Removing fuel hazards is sound, proven fire prevention practice to help keep small wildland fires from developing into complex and raging wildland Megafires. PRFR’s policy on agricultural burns is that the Agriculture Permit holders contact them to arrange coordination of controlled agriculture

For these agriculture permit holders, the PRFR service area begins one mile east of AZ 77 on E Aravaipa .Rd. PRFR Service Area maps are available by contacting Pinal Rural Fire Rescue.
