An Abundance of Life by Father Michael

This past week we had two wonderful celebrations here at Holy Cross. The first was the Parish Appreciation Barbeque held last Sunday afternoon. We had about 150 parishioners attend. The caterer we used, The Barbeque King, did an outstanding job in providing non-stop food for the entire afternoon. But, the best part of the day was simply allowing the spirit of Holy Cross to flow. This was done as many people simply came together to enjoy each other’s company. I heard one description that rang true to me; it felt like a big family reunion. Fortunately, the weather held out to the very end when we were beginning to wrap things up. Another great moment for the parish was our celebration of Confirmation on Monday. There were 216 of our young people receiving the sacrament. Bishop Andrzej Zglejszewski, one of our auxiliary bishops, came to confer the sacrament. He had an enthusiastic attitude that engaged everyone throughout the ceremony. And, his energy level did not diminish in spite of the fact it was a long day with three ceremonies. Occasions like this are beautiful moments for the parish. We celebrate the efforts of so many people. There have been catechists who have been working for years with the same group of students. And, then there are others whose focus is making the Mass itself a rich and prayerful experience. It was a great day to celebrate the gift of the Holy Spirit. The cell tower project is underway. My understanding is that for the first few weeks most of the work will be focused on the electrical boxes that will be located in the back of the building near the dumpster. The work on the tower itself includes adding about 10 feet to its height. All the cell phone components will be contained within this new section. The tower should be functional by the beginning of November. This weekend is Catechetical Sunday. We are so grateful for those who offer to share the faith, particularly with our children. Many of our catechists begin this ministry to fill a need that we have, but in the end find it to be a rich experience that deepens their own faith. Thank you for all that you do. There are still two slots open for the Financial Peace University that begins on Tuesday. Please call the office if you are interested. And, there are only a handful of seats available for the overnight trip to the Sight and Sound Theater. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to be part of this pre-Christmas adventure.

Thank you to all the families who have re-registered their children in our program. We still have families who have not signed up, and our deadline has passed. If you still need to register, please do so as soon as possible. We are in the process of putting classes together. We cannot guarantee your child a placement if we do not have your registration form.

Levels 2 through 7 will begin classes the week of October 5th. Level 7 parents and students have been invited to attend a meeting which will outline the Two Year Confirmation Preparation. Level 8 will begin classes the week of November 2nd. All Level 8 parents and students were invited to a meeting which will outline the Level 8 year and where students and parents will receive books and an information packet. Level 1 will begin the week of November 2nd. Parents will be invited to a meeting to get the overview of the year and the books for their child. Catechists are always needed to educate our children in the faith. We are especially in need of Level 2 Catechists in the Tackan and Mt. Pleasant areas. Level 4 Catechists are needed in the Wenonah and Mt. Pleasant areas. Please call the Religious Education Office at 631-265-2200 ext. 12 for more information.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

Help Needed! We are looking for Catechists for our small group Special Needs program which meets at Holy Cross on Monday afternoons. Please call the Religious Education Office at 631-265-2200 ext. 12 for more information.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word, for children in grades K-3rd grade, resumes this Sunday,

September 20th at the 11:30 Mass in the Fr. Joe Room. Children's Liturgy is held every Sunday

from September to June, except for holiday weekends. We are looking for additional helpers

for this fall. Time commitment is dependent on the number of helpers we have. If you are in

grades 4 through 12 and would be interested in helping out, or are looking for a community

service activity, please contact Karyn at 648-3594, or speak with her prior to the 11:30am Mass.

SPECIAL COLLECTIONS

This weekend, at the offertory we will also be

collecting for the St. Pius X Enriched Living

Facility. This collection enables retired priests of our

diocese who reside or are recuperating at the facility to

get the care they need.

Next weekend, at the offertory we will also be

collecting for our Regional Schools. An investment in

our children is an investment in our future!

RELIGIOUS FREEDOM

Government

vs.

Conscience

An obscure law clerk, refusing to sign her name

to a marriage license for a same-sex couple, by

citing her freedom of religion and freedom of

conscience rights, is the news story of the day.

She said the licenses could proceed normally if

her signature were not involved, but that

answer did not satisfy the complainants and

she was sent to jail.

This battle ground is a particular contest of wills,

with very specific competing values. Are citizens

servants of their government, or the other way

around? Does the government now have the right

to coerce an action against one’s own conscience?

Is employment by that same government now a

forfeiture of personal conscience?

YES, decided the judge who found the clerk in

contempt: “The idea of natural law superseding

this court’s authority would be a dangerous

precedent indeed.”

However, America was founded by faithful and

God-fearing men who despised government

tyranny and sought religious freedom and

individual liberty. America incorporated these

universally true principles in its Declaration of

Independence and Constitution.

“Religious freedom, an essential requirement of

the dignity of every person, is the cornerstone

of the structure of human rights.”
