Fall kick Off Sale!

Anytime is a great time for a party, butHalloween offers such a wide variety ofchoices, from the decorations tocostumes and food. It’s a good time forboth adults and children to dress up andpretend to be someone or something else. This year, Halloween is on Thursday, soNovember 1st and 2nd will be p a r t ytime!

Halloween is one of themost popular holidaysaround the world. Itsymbolizes the start ofwinter. . .and in myarea, it usuallysnows on ora r o u n dHalloween. It is atime for celebratingand is characterized by trick or treat, making it a child-friendly activity.

Planning the Halloween party can beas much fun as attending one. Make it afamily affair and invite family adults andtheir children. Also include special friendsand their children, too. Your theme couldbe anything from Halloween spooks andwitches to medieval, pirates, movie ortelevision stars, or 60's or 70's hippies. There are so many ideas from which tochoose.

Decoration ideas are bountifulespecially in the dollar and novelty stores.Of course, if you are crafty, you can makethem yourself, keeping your theme inmind. You can have a special room setup with spooky music, creepy thingshanging from the ceiling and dim orcolored lights. Keep away from candlesand anything with a flame for safetyreasons.

For a table decoration, plan your punchbowl as the centerpiece. Several daysbefore the party, make a zombie ice handto place in the punch. Take a pair ofrubber or latex gloves; wash with dishsoap and rinse well. Turn the glove insideout to dry. When it is dry, pour in greencolored water and fasten the top with astrip of elastic. Place in the freezer withthe fingers hanging down for best results. At party time, run warm water over thegloves, just enough to loosen the ice. (Youcould make one or two.) Place the icezombie hand in the punch bowl and addyour fruit juice or punch. For addedeffect, add some gummy worms or plasticspiders on the table around the base ofthe bowl.

It’s Party Time with LesleyHalloween is Party Time

by Lesley R. NuttallKeep your lunch light with finger foods.

There are a variety of appetizer fingerfoods available in the supermarkets.Decide on 2 hot items and 2 or 3 colditems that can be made ahead of time.

Some ideas are:(1) Wrap a pineapple chunk or a cube

of cheese in a slice of ham. Fasten with atoothpick.

(2) Layer and alternate severalslices of cooked meat together

with cheese slices. Then cut the stackinto wedges orstrips and fastenwith toothpicks.

(3) Have a varietyof crackers withhard or cheese

spreads.(4) Make a try of cut up vegetables:

carrots, celery, broccoli, cauliflower, etc, with dip.

(5) Have a tray of cut up fruit and/orpopcorn balls for dessert.

Arrange your food on the table aroundthe punch bowl, along with plates andutensils to make a very attractive andappetizing setting.

For fun and games, a costume paradeis always a hit, with prizes for differentcategories: funniest, scariest, mostoriginal, most outrageous, etc. dependingon your theme. Most people love achallenge and a treasurer hunt would givethem fun! Write up some clues for themto follow.

At the end of the search, have a largeblack pot, basket, or box for them toretrieve a treasure. You could fill thetreasure container with such things aswrapped gum, bags of black and orangejelly beans, popcorn balls, Halloweenitems, things for girls wrapped in pink andboys prizes wrapped in black. They willall love the element of surprise!

Plan your party to the last detail, andyou will be able to enjoy the party andhave loads of fun yourself with yourfamily and friends. Happy Halloween toall!

The Fun of HalloweenWhen the sun goes down, and the goblins come out to playThey go from house to house, searching for candy as their prey. There are costumes of all kinds; some are big, and some are smallThere’s a sharp shooter cowboy, and a raggedy Ann doll.

A big grey wolf is followed by a little gingham catThere’s a green ninja with a sword, and a small black bat.Door bells are ringing up and down every streetThe roar of laughter echo’s, as the children holler “trick or treat.”

Porch lights are shining bright, helping children find their wayGroups of goblins running to gather whatever treats they may.A lady playing an accordion greets them, dressed as Garfield the catThe children are amazed to see music coming from a cat so fat!

The children run quickly, with little time to waste.Police cars patrol, making sure the children are all safe. Some children carry pumpkin pails, others lugging pillow cases

“Do real men drink tea?” I asked myhusband, Milt.

“What about Sir Lipton?” he replied.I chuckled. Lipton tea aside, many men

do drink tea, and my husband is amongthem. Whether at home or in tearooms,Milt enjoys a good cuppa’ tea. In fact, forour for-TEA-eth anniversary he said,“Since we’ve been married for-tea years, let’s go for tea 40 times in the next year.”So we set off on frequent tea jaunts.

Men and Tea: During our tea outings wemet men of all ages drinking tea. Inone tearoom, a young fellow satalone in a quiet corner, drinking tea and read-ing a book. In an-other casualteahouse withshelves ofloose teas, wesaw young menwith theirlaptops and cups oftea. And in most tearooms, weweren’t the only husband and wife chat-ting over afternoon tea.

Even so, my friend Carolyn said, “ Iknow real men take tea, and my husbandlikes it. But wild horses couldn’t drag himto an afternoon tea.” She continued, “Thebiggest stumbling block for most guys istaking tea and dainty sandwiches in aroom full of chattering women!”

I realize some men wouldn’t feel com-fortable in tearooms with frilly, femininedécor. But not all tearooms have thatambiance. Even if they do, the good foodattracts men.

Manly Menus: Recently we found ourfavorite tearoom filled with mostly men.Surprised, I approached a table with twomen and said, “I’m doing research for atea column. Do real men drink tea?”

The younger man quickly replied, “No,we don’t! And we don’t eat quiche either.”

“Then why are you here?” I asked.“There’s a car show nearby, so we came

for lunch,” he replied. “The turkey clubsandwich was great.” Then he looked atthe robust gentleman seated across fromhim and added, “My friend here is a full-figure guy. Do you think he would eatdainty tea sandwiches?”

I smiled, realizing he had pointed out acommon misconception about tea-rooms—that you can only order tiny tid-bits. But, actually, the varied menus ofteninclude substantial servings for heartyappetites.

One such manly meal is Ploughman’sLunch. Its main components are bread, cheese, and chutney. But it may also in-clude sliced meats, pâté, or even a slice

of cold pork pie. Sometimes fresh fruitand sliced vegetables are added as well.

Some Like It Hot, Some Like It Cold: Ispoke with two men and a woman at an-other table. “Do real men drink tea?” Iasked. The woman pointed to onegentleman’s glass and said, “He’s drink-ing iced tea.” But the other man proudlyraised his large coffee mug and said, “I’mScandinavian,” as if to imply drinking teawould betray his heritage.

When I asked my friend Cheryl if herhusband drank tea, she said, “Yes, iced inthe summer and hot black tea when he’s

sick. Otherwise he prefers cof-fee.” My friend Jeanetta

said, “When mydad’s doctor toldhim to drop cof-fee, Dad foundsipping hotstrong tea as asubstitute.”

M a s c u l i n i - T E A :With latte stands on nearly

every corner, many men enjoy cof-fee as well as tea. But some espressothemselves better with tea. “My husbanddrinks only tea,” Sylvia said. “No coffeeunless he’s bone cold, and that doesn’thappen more than once a decade.” An-other friend said, “My son knows allabout tea, and he only drinks tea.”

The bottom line is: Some men prefertea. And with all the known health ben-efits tea contains, I say, good for them!

Men may prefer stronger black teasrather than floral potpourri-smellingblends. Some enjoy teas with a smoky fla-vor, such as Lapsang Souchong. Othersdrink Chai, Constant Comment, EnglishBreakfast, or Darjeeling. One“gentleman’s sampler” on the web in-cludes Irish Rum Cream tea, a strongblack tea with a taste of rum and hint ofsweet cream. But many men take afterStar Trek’s captain, Jean-Luc Picard, andprefer “tea, Earl Grey, hot.”

With numerous teas to choose from—black, green, red, and white—most menwill find a blend that’s just their cup oftea.

Although my husband and I have com-pleted our for-tea (40) outings, we’re al-ways ready for another cup of tea. Won’tyou join us?
