Size and Shape of Earth• Earth’s shape is almost perfectly spherical with it slightly

flattening at the poles and bulging at the equator.• Earth’s actual shape is called an oblate spheroid.

Evidence:*photos from space (best evidence.-the way a ship appears to sink as it disappears over the horizon-shadow of the earth on the moon during a lunar eclipse.-gravity measurements – you weigh more at the poles because you are closer to the center of gravity (stronger pull).

Spheres of Earth

• All settled in density order with the lithosphere on the bottom and the atmosphere on top.

• 1.Lithosphere- includes the solid crust of the earth and the stiffer mantle. Approx. 100km thick. R.T. p.10

• 2. Hydrosphere – a thin layer of water that lies between the lithosphere and atmosphere.

• R.T. p.1• 3. Atmosphere – the shell of gasses that surrounds the

earth. R.T. pp.1,14

A model is a way to represent the properties of an object or system.

• Many systems are too big or too small to represent accurately so a proportion must be used to scale the measurements appropriately.

• All proportions are set up as follows:

Real World Part = Model PartReal World Whole Model Whole

10/01/13Aim: What evidence do we have for the earth’s shape?

• Do Now: • 1. List all evidences for earth’s shape.• 2. What is the true shape of the earth?• 3. If a mountain on Mars is 6km high and I want to make a

30 cm globe of mars, how high would the mountain have to be on my model? (use the proportion formula and your reference table.)

• HW – Track storms.

9/30/10Aim: Topic 1 Review

• Do Now:• Get in test formation, take out reference

tables and a calculator.

• HW- Track storms, finish labs.
