The truth here is that the Hoosier Salon was created in 1925 by a farsighted group who dreamed of showcasing Indiana’s art in an annual exhibition. Its members hoped:

• To inspire Indiana artists, the novices as well as the experts, to develop their collective talent,

• To call attention to those artists who immortalize Indiana’s beauty, its character and its history, and

• To furnish an outlet and profitable market for those artists, a market which would encourage the beginner and reward the professional.

Jurors’ Statement

It was with a great sense of honor and responsibility that we accepted the challenge to judge the 91st Annual Hoosier Salon Exhibition. Our selections were informed by a desire to be as inclusive as possible with regard to medium, style, genre, and subject matter. We attempted to balance an appreciation for individual artistry and creative expression with an eye for quality craftsmanship, presentation and solid technique.

Qiang Huang, OPA

Qiang Huang (pronounced Chong Wong) was born and raised in Beijing, China and he now lives in Austin, Texas. His interest in art was developed when he was very young, and influenced strongly by his uncle, Hong-En Huang, a professional painter and art educator.

He did not get the opportunity to study art in any professional art institutions. He studied science and technology instead. He moved to America in 1985, obtained a Ph.D. in physics in 1993, and began a career in optical engineering. However, he has been active in local art communities. To further develop his artistic skills, he has attended classes and workshops. He studied with well-known artists David Leffel, Sherrie McGraw, Scott Burdick, Carolyn Anderson and others. In the summer of 2012, Qiang attended the graduate school of the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, and studied with the well-known figurative artist Zhaoming Wu. He is a guest artist with the Putney Painters, and has painted multiple times with Nancy Guzik and the modern master of representational art, Richard Schmid. Qiang’s paintings show remarkable accuracy and expressive brush strokes.

Qiang is a Signature member of the Oil Painters of America.

Randall Sexton

California-based artist Randall Sexton is nationally known for the use of color and expressive brushwork in his oil paintings of “everyday” scenes. Raised in rural Connecticut, Sexton moved to San Francisco, California in 1980 after completing a BFA from the University of Connecticut, Storrs.

The Bay area has become his home, where he has earned a great reputation for being an educator as well as a fine artist. He taught classes in drawing, painting, and composition at the San Francisco Academy of Art until 2005. He now leads private workshops around the country and is a free-lance instructor at Pixar Studios in Emeryville, California.

Acknowledged by jurors and artists alike, Randall has garnered national awards for his paintings. Most notably, Randy was honored in 2008 with the coveted “Artists’ Choice Award” at the 10th Annual Laguna Beach Plein Air Event at the Laguna Museum of Art.

He has been a member of the California Art Club, The Laguna Beach Plein Air Painters Association, “The Outsiders,” a group of artists loosely connected to “The Society of Six,” and The Baywood Artists Group committed to working on environmentally sensitive projects.

Following jurying this year’s exhibition, Qiang Huang and Randall Sexton conducted two three-day workshops at the Twin Oaks Estate in Indianapolis.
