THE EPISTLE

Great is the Lord, and great is His power. Praise the Lord, for the Lord is good.

The Reading from the Acts of the Saintly and Pure Apostles. (5:12-20)

In those days, many signs and wonders were done among the people by the hands of the Apostles. And they were all together in Solomon’s Portico. None of the rest dared join them, but the people held them in high honor. And more than ever believers were added to the Lord, multitudes both of men and women, so that they even carried out the sick into the streets, and laid them on beds and pallets, that as Peter came by at least his shadow might fall on some of them. The people also gathered from the towns around Je-rusalem, bringing the sick and those afflicted with unclean spirits, and they were all healed. But the high priest rose up and all who were with him, that is, the party of the Sad-ducees, and filled with jealousy they arrested the Apostles and put them in the common prison. But at night an angel of the Lord opened the prison doors and brought them out and said, “Go and stand in the temple and speak to the people all the words of this Life.”

THE GOSPEL

The Reading from the Holy Gospel according to St. John. (20:19-31)

On the evening of that day, the first day of the week, the doors being shut where the Disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said to them, “Peace be with you.” When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His side. Then the Disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I send you.” And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you for-give the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.” Now Thomas, one of the Twelve, called the Twin, was not with them when Jesus came. So the other Disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails, and place my finger in the mark of the nails, and place my hand in His side, I will not believe.” Eight days later, His Disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. The doors were shut, but Jesus came and stood among them, and said, “Peace be with you.” Then He said to Thomas, “Put your finger here, and see My hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side; do not be faithless, but believing.” Thomas answered Him, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen Me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe.” Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the Disci-ples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His Name.

ALL NIGHT FRIDAY'S VIGIL REFLECTIONS

Spending the night in Church, reading & guarding Christ’s tomb, helps me feel like I can give back a little to Him, who gave us everything. It helps me feel closer to Him and listening to His story through the Gospels helps me to understand Him better. It makes me appreciate His sacrifice for us, as unwor-thy as we are, and thank Him for it. Michelle Shaheen

The Vigil was an excellent opportunity to become knowledgeable in our unique Orthodox Christian Faith. The challenges and hardships Jesus Christ faced in order for all of us to be saved, should not be taken for granted. Repentance through the lessons learned in the Gospels is a key goal that every Or-thodox Christian should have. Being a good Orthodox Christian is process that takes spiritual persis-tence, it is not a one step process. The challenges we will face in our spiritual life are numerous, but with continued faith we can ultimately stay on our path to righteousness. Christian Khouri

I felt like I was a new person. I also heard something in one of the Gospels. I heard that in the Gospel if you lie to God you will be punished and it is always not good to lie, that is my favorite part of the Vigil. Luke Tsoukalas

After 6 years of attending this Vigil, I still feel incomplete. Although I may be leaving El Paso, I plan to keep attending these during my time in college. I feel like I may never truly understand the fullness of Christ dying for our sins, due to how truly selfless that act was. If anyone today was asked by their fa-ther to die for everyone’s sins, how many of us would say yes? The one thing we can do for God is to remember how blessed we are to live every day. Chris Al-Dehneh

After coming to several Vigils, I can honestly say that although I have not learned everything there is to know, I do know that I am so blessed for everything God has done for me. Realizing that this will be my last year of participating in this activity, it is really sad. Just to think that the first year I partici-pated in the vigil, I had no idea what I was doing, and here I am now. I know that wherever each of us go, we will have God continuously helping us, leading us to the right path. I cannot put into words how much I am going to participating in this experience, but I will remember it for the rest of my life. Colette Khouri

This has been my fifth vigil and I can assure you that I have gotten the same holy feeling each time. I look forward to the all night vigil every year, and I cannot wait until the next 2 years. Sam Salloum

Jesus Christ voluntary died for our sins; something we often take for granted. That is what I learned at last Friday night’s Vigil. What Jesus Christ did, none can emulate , however, because of this fact we must not stop all attempts at doing as He taught, forgiveness, love, patience. We must do His word in order to be truly happy. Jonathan Jarjour

Page 9: 915-584-9100 / 9101 REVEREND FATHER GEORGE M. AL … Bulletins... · 2013-05-09 · St. George Antiochian Orthodox Christian Church كنيسة القديكنساورقديس نلألطالأية

Altar Boys Many Thanks to all Altar Boys who helped during all the services in the Great Fast. God Bless all of you and your families. All the Divine services are more complete with the presence of Alter Boys and the support of their parents. God keep you all for many years.

After what we read tonight, I realize how much we take for granted. What Jesus did for us is like nothing else. He died for us. If any other person had the choice to die for everyone else, we proba-bly wouldn’t be here. I am so thankful for getting to read to Him Wright from the Gospel, it really made me feel like He was standing Wright in front of me while I was reading. I absolutely love having the privilege to do this once a year, and doing with family is even better. Sarah Daioub

The guarding of the tomb of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ is an experience that most accurate-ly provides insight on the long-suffering of Jesus. The sacrifices that Christ went through for us in al-most unimaginable. The Vigil helps us, as Orthodox Christians, to further understand how blessed we are and what sacrifices - small ones compared to what Jesus Christ went through – we must make. David Dayoub

Jesus gave His life for us voluntarily. This is something that we often take for granted. I feel that it is easy to forget that although Jesus was fully God, He was also fully man. He was made of bone and flesh. He felt pain. He was probably terrified, but He accepted His death, so that we could be saved and have eternal life. The very least that we can do is be with Him for one night. I feel that when we think about Him as a real living, breathing person, we can be much more appreciative of His sacrifice and try to understand that He loves us more than anybody could possibly love anyone. Noel Shaheen

Every year, I love attending the Vigil because the feeling of guarding Jesus’ tomb is indescribable. We’re serving as His warriors, keeping Him company after He gave His life for ours. On good Friday, after the Vigil, I always remind myself how truly blessed I am. Not only for my physical possession and health but for my faith that has always lifted me up and will continue to lift me up thought my life. Kristen Madsen

I had the chance to listen, practice, and read the Lord’s Holy scriptures. This is an experience that not everyone has that chance to experience. I heard Jesus' story from beginning to end, and I under-stand all the pain and suffering He went through for our salvation. This has shown me how I should al-ways love my neighbor and many more commandments of rules that Jesus Christ set for us in order to take the stairway to Heaven.

Johnny Odeh

Support for Abducted Syrian Hierarchs

The Archdiocese encourages all of her members to show their contin-uing support for kidnapped archbishops Paul and John of Aleppo, first and foremost through heartfelt prayer. We also encourage people to sign and promote the online petition available here at the website of the White House, calling for United States government action on behalf of the abduct-ed metropolitans. Please use the petition at this link.

https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petition/appeal-president-obama-and-his-government-release-two-abducted-orthodox-christian-archbishops-syria/xNskxL1q

Support and attention for Archbishop Paul and Archbishop John continues to grow. The Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops of North and Central America has published their joint letter to US Secretary of State John Kerry here. The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese has published Ecumenical Patri-arch Bartholomew's call for the release of the archbishops. The Russian Orthodox Church has published several statements, including the patriar-chal message from Patriarch Kirill to Patriarch John X available here. Pope Francis of the Roman Catholic Church prayed for the release of the metro-politans, as announced here. The Archdiocese is grateful for these and all other ongoing efforts for the sake of Archbishop Paul and Archbishop John, and all our brothers and sisters suffering in the region.
