Dear Friends, This week we are going to get real, literally. If you remember last week, I indicated that we would look into the true, the good, the beautiful. This is a talk that we need to have; for culture to cultivate it must be true, good, and consequently beautiful, otherwise it’s not culture. Culture cultivates the nature within, allowing it to flourish. The guiding question for today, however, is what is the foundation upon which these rest? Who or what determines these things? We have been looking at some examples, like cultivating plants in a garden. We have also considered the objective nature of healthy food/habits versus unhealthy food/habits. And more recently, we mentioned that just as we would pursue certain forms of training for other things, like for horses, why not our humanity. From these, it would seem that we must respect objective parameters or laws to promote flourishing in the physical order. Why would this not apply to the “spiritual-moral” order as well? Why would our flourishing as human beings not be delimited similarly? It should. There needs to be an objective foundation upon which a culture rests, what is it? Objective reality or in a word, being. Our current culture, however, does not necessarily agree with this. An example might help. Think of the old adage, “beauty is in the eye of the beholder”. Or let’s use a more modern version, one I surprisingly heard from a teenager, “beauty is merely a social construct, right?” Most people will quickly agree with this, as it is said so often. Well, one initial difficulty here is that beauty is reduced to nothing but a personal preference. Objective beauty ceases to exist, ultimately rendering beauty meaningless—an empty term. It means whatever an individual wants it to mean. The root of this attitude, which is no mere coincidence, is that truth and goodness are also treated the same—in the mind and heart of the beholder. “This is true for me” or “that’s what’s good for you, to each his own.” Nothing is good or bad, it can go either way. A society can then appease its moral conscience about the matter of subjective truth, goodness, and beauty, by way of agreement. If six out of eleven people in a group would say that it is true/good/beautiful, let it be so! In this type of subjective culture, things can ebb and flow, “it just depends.” To shed light on how concerning (to put it politely) this can get, I would like to quote an article I recently read, which speaks about the question of life itself. “Such a culture would be more preoccupied with death than with life; and this preoccupation might be manifest in a variety of ways. It would promote a right to die on your own terms, but no right to live, rather only a permission to live, provided that you possess certain qualities that people acknowledge as useful or as ushering you into the fold; and what these qualities are and how they shall be recognized will shift with political exigencies and sentiments. Life is no gift, but a mere thing, to be disposed of at will, like garbage. Nothing is sacred—not the body, not the soul, no place, no object, no name, no human persons, no history, no songs, no God. […] The people in a dying culture, if they do not take their own lives, see no great beauty in human life.” (Anthony Esolen, The Suicide of a Civilization) We have said that culture is the activity that man carries out to perfect himself. But not everything he does contributes truly to his perfection and therefore not all his activities are truly “culture.” Therefore, we have an important task of establishing the true foundations in order to be able, from them, to discern the manifestations of man that are truly culture and the manifestations that are not. The point that I want for us to take away here is that there needs to be a foundation upon which culture must rest. When that foundation is subjective, rather than objective reality, anything can and oftentimes does happen. Unfortunately, the further and further that any human or groups of them stray from reality and the Author thereof, they will suffer decay. Just like the person who wants to stray from healthy eating habits or who does not properly care for their plants in the garden, time will tell. What are these true foundations? Being and Human Nature. In other words, the concrete reality itself (made by God) and human nature itself. Our experiences or our preferences or empirical data, as important as they may be, these are not enough, as St. John Paul II says, “reality and truth do transcend the factual and the empirical.” The transcendentals are not things themselves, but properties of being by which man understands creation in relation to God. Therefore, the being (made by God) is true, good and beautiful, independent of how subjects may esteem them or value them or “behold” them. God and His designs is the unique beholder of what is true, good and beautiful, because he is the Author. Mary, Our Lady of Peace, pray for us! Fr. Brian
