Child Labor Laws

During the 1990s, a new issue of child labor moved into the forefront: imported foreign goods that were produced by foreign "sweatshops" employing child labor. Laws like the Child Labor Deterrence Act, which would prohibit the importation of manufactured or mined goods that are produced by foreign children under the age of 15, were passed. Meanwhile, President Clinton signed Executive Order13,126, ”Prohibition of Acquisition of Products Produced by Forced or Indentures Child Labor,” on June 12, 1999. ”

The Times…The 90s was a decade of great prosperity for the U.S. The economy grew by an average of 4 percent per year between 1992 and 1999. An average of 1.7 million jobs a year were added to the American work force, versus around 850,000 a year during this century so far. The unemployment rate dropped from nearly 8 percent in 1992 to 4 percent — that is, effectively zero — at the end of the decade. … From 1990 to 1999, the median American household income grew by 10 percent, and stocks quadrupled in value. What We Learned

This project taught us that the 90s was a decade full of better movies, music, and people. It also was a time of more economic prosperity than what we see today.
