2 | 9-MILE WAR | THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 3, 2011 | THE ZEPHYRHILLS NEWS
When it comes to special sections, there is nothing better than our 9-Mile War tab.
You have one of the greatest rivalries in high school football right here in your hands. You have great stories, photos, graphics and, of course, our advertisers that bring it to you.
Our team breaks the huddle and gets to work. Steve Lee and Dave Walters take the handoff and run with the stories and photos, while our graphics specialist Nancy King tackles the artwork that gives our playbook a great look. Theresa LeBlanc calls the play on the advertising end. Our coach Jan Linville works to put up the points for the victory.
The scoreboard shows another win for The Zephyrhills News and its local sports coverage.
When you have Zephyrhills and Pasco getting ready to strap it up and go at it, we've got it covered. Look through these pages and you will fi nd complete information about the rivalry that has families divided and communities striving for bragging rights.
Sure, weÕ re partial to the Bulldogs, but we know the Pirates are part of our East Pasco family. Just nine miles separate these two schools and we know the players on each squad are friends, and in some cases family.
Friendship and family takes a backseat for 60 minutes Friday night and then itÕ s a gridiron battle.
ThatÕ s why itÕ s a 9-Mile War.Enjoy reading and see you at the game.

The Bulldogs, who had just fi ve wins over the past two seasons, are in the midst of a turnaround and threatening to make the playoffs for the fi rst time since back-to-back appearances in 2005 and 2006. Second-year coach and former Bulldog standout Reggie Roberts has maintained an optimistic outlook from the outset and the team is buying into it.

Beat Pasco.Every football rivalry clichŽ
is in play for the clash between the Bulldogs (5-3) and the Pirates (9-0). Throw out the records, when these two teams come to play, itÕ s a war.
ItÕ s the 9-Mile War. The Bulldogs have a lot more
to play for than bragging rights. Their playoff lives are on the line when they line up against Pasco. A win and they have a shot. A loss would put them on the outside looking in.
The Bulldogs got to this point in the season with a slow start, a powerful winning streak and a heartbreaking loss.
An emotional win against Pasco would make the season complete.
Led by speedy senior
quarterback Jamal Roberts, the Bulldogs are a scoring machine averaging nearly 40 points per game. The Bulldogs have scored 41 points or more in their last fi ve games.
RobertsÕ speed has broken the backs of many teams this season as he has over 900 yards rushing and 22 touchdowns on the ground. He is a threat through the air as well, tossing six scoring strikes this season.
Ò Pasco hasnÕ t faced a team with our speed,Ó said second-year coach Reggie Roberts. Ò I think we match up. I know their argument will be that the only reason the spring game was close was because they were missing players.
Ò LetÕ s count the players who werenÕ t there from our team. We have a bunch. We also have players who were there who are better, mature players.Ó
Take a look at another speed demon in Adrian Sanchez. In the spring game against Pasco, he tore up the fi eld when he took the second-half kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown. Against Fivay, he had a kickoff return and a fumble recovery return that totaled 189 yards.
Sanchez is Jamal Roberts' favorite target and he is also a threat to break a game open whenever he touches the ball.
While the Bulldogs are known for their big plays, the Zephyrhills defense needs to take the big plays away from the Pirates.
But there is one thing the Bulldogs have been a part of that Pasco hasnÕ t.
Ò WeÕ ve played the tough games and they havenÕ t played a tough one yet,Ó coach Roberts said. Ò WeÕ re going to be the ones to hit them in the mouth this year.Ó
Zephyrhills was a team that has suffered through back-to-back 2-8 seasons. There was a confi dence problem in Zephyrhills. That was the biggest hurdle coach Roberts had to leap this season.
Ò If you look at this team, this isnÕ t the same Bulldog football team. This team has confi dence. We feel like we have to play one game at a time in one city at a time.
Ò WeÕ re not looking at just the state playoffs. They (Pasco) think they won it all already. I donÕ t think they know about the old Bulldog. ThatÕ s the spirit of football here.
Ò When those stands are packed and its 10-deep along the rail and this place is rocking, they will know the old Bulldog.Ó
The old Bulldogs is looking to take a bite out of the Pirate Friday night.
The scenario may be different, but the goal remains the same for the Bulldogs

CHEVY RUNS DEEP
When Reggie Roberts was hired as the head football coach at Zephyrhills, optimism was high. A local player returned home and was ready to lead the beleaguered team to prominence.
Roberts graduated from Zephyrhills in 1990 and had a full-ride football scholarship waiting for him at Bethune Cookman University. He didnÕ t want to leave ZHS, but he did and excelled on the gridiron at the college level.
Roberts came back to what was considered more of a homecoming than a hiring.
The former BCU linebacker and law enforcement offi cer for the Orange County SheriffÕ s Department is living his dream.
Ò I have the best job in America and IÕ m proud to be a Bulldog,Ó Roberts said after this seasonÕ s win against Anclote.
RobertsÕ freshman season as the coach of the Bulldogs was tough when the Bulldogs registered just two wins, but the sophomore effort is what has everyone buzzing.
Ò We have a buzz on this campus and there is talk about winning and playoffs,Ó principal Steve Van Gorden said after the Bulldogs won four straight. Ò WeÕ re winning
and that always creates excitement. The expectations are raised. ThereÕ s a shift in attitude and people are expecting to win.
Zephyrhills is a playoff contender. It is a team that no one mentioned in any preseason predictions.
It all predicates on RobertsÕ family philosophy. He doesnÕ t coach a team. He coaches a family and preaches the benefi ts of overcoming adversity.
Ò I think they have overcome adversity,Ó Van Gorden said. Ò They went from Fisher to Cogman to having co-coaches and now they have stability in Reggie.
Ò In year two, there is a solid foundation. They are believing in themselves. They are dealing with everything and believing in each other.Ó
Roberts was the selection from 100 applicants for the position that was fi lled last season on an interim basis by coaches Troy Hochstetler and Greg Mathis. The co-coaches fi lled the void after coach Jarrell Cogman was released just two weeks before the season.
The selection process, handled by a committee of members of the community and the school, whittled the list to 15 and ultimately a fi nal fi ve.
Van Gorden made the fi nal decision.Ò I decided to go with Reggie for
several reasons,Ó Van Gorden said. Ò No.
1, he had incredible community support, heÕ s an alumnus and he understands the tradition at Zephyrhills High School. HeÕ s a hard worker. HeÕ s a man of character and integrity. HeÕ s just what I thought we needed to bring our program forward and motivate our students, academically and athletically,Ó
When Roberts was hired, he felt he was living his dream.
Ò This is a dream,Ó Roberts said. Ò I donÕ t see this as a job. This is an opportunity to do what I really love to do. I get to give back to this community that made me and give back to these young men and make them successful young men when they exit these doors.
Ò This is not a stepping stone. This is home. This where I will be as long as Mr. (Principal Steve) Van Gorden will have me. I love this community. I canÕ t say enough. The greatest experience of my life was at Zephyrhills High School and I hope to make some kids experience the same as mine.Ó
When Van Gorden made the announcement that he hired Roberts he said the Bulldog football program is on the rise and encouraged all the local high schools to be leary when they play Zephyrhills.
He also predicted, Ò exciting, high-scoring style of football coming to Bulldog
Stadium on Friday nights.ÓHe was right on the mark on that
statement. What could be another possibility is
with continuous success, Roberts could be looking at Coach of the Year honors, players could be named All-Conference and college scholarship could be on the table.
Ò All of that is possible,Ó Van Gorden said. “There is a confi dence that wasn’t there. This team fi ghts for everything they achieve. They believe in it. It is nice to see that change in that belief. It shows what kind of young men are coming out of this program.Ó

Pasco will win big in 9-Mile WarGive the Zephyrhills High football team credit for being perhaps
a year or two ahead of schedule in its turnaround efforts. That said, the resurgent Bulldogs are about to get a reality check
courtesy of the best team Ñ not to mention ZephyrhillsÕ oldest and fiercest rivalÑ in Pasco County.
The Pasco Pirates dominated the local scene last fall by posting a 10-0 record in the regular season and advancing to a region semi-final where they lost to eventual state champion Tampa Jefferson. That 1-1 postseason mark did not sit well with the team and its coach, who appear on a mission to advance even further this year.
ThatÕ s bad news for the Bulldogs, since the undefeated Pirates (9-0) might be even better than last season. And talk about fired up, star quarterback Jacob Guy, a highly touted Division I recruit who played for the Zephyrhills junior varsity team as a freshman, said he is on a state-championship-or-bust mission.
PascoÕ s typical runaways this season have included five shut-outs and eight dominating victories in which the losing team avoided further embarrassment thanks to a running clock in the second half.
Expect the clock to show Zephyrhills some mercy on Nov. 4 at Bulldog Stadium. In all, Pasco has topped the 50-point mark in most of its games this season and despite
Zephyrhills playing much better than last year the Bulldogs are still nowhere near the level of their closest rival. A victory would extend PascoÕ s all-time series edge to 37-17 and increase the current winning streak over Zephyrhills to four in a row.
Pasco has won four straight district championships since former Wesley Chapel defen-sive coordinator Tom McHughÕ s arrival in 2007. A second consecutive unbeaten season and fifth district title in a row is a given now. The players and coach might deny it, but at this point in the season the Pirates might be more concerned about their playoff opponents than this yearÕ s version of the 9-Mile War.
Sure, Zephyrhills is vastly improved and appears to be the best team at the school since back-to-back playoff appearances in 2005 and 2006. And one year in the not-so-distant future the Bulldogs may indeed come out on the winning end of the 9-Mile War.
But not this year. Pasco wins 48-12.
Bulldogs are a team of destinyWhen the Bulldogs hand the Pirates their first loss of the season
Friday night, everyone will call it an upset.I call it destiny. This is a team that has been beaten down for the last few seasons
coming off back-to-back years with a 2-8 record. Right now, Zephyrhills sits at 5-3 and Pasco is 9-0.
But this is the 9-Mile War in Bulldog Stadium where Zephyrhills has something to prove. The Bulldogs may have suffered a heartbreak-
ing loss to Fivay to jeopardize their playoff hopes, but a win against rival Pasco will put their playoff hopes on life support.
Pasco hasnÕ t been tested this season. The Bulldogs will test them and the Pirates will fail because they lack a sense of urgency. The Bulldogs have faced adversity this season and kicked it in the teeth.
Coach Reggie Roberts played in Bulldog Stadium for Zephyrhills and knows the importance of the rivalry. He knows what it means to the players, the school and the community.
Zephyrhills is the fastest team Pasco will see this season and they will see Jamal Roberts and Adrian Sanchez run past them. This tan-
dem will be the game-breakers. Roberts will be on the verge of a 1,000-yard season on the ground. Sanchez has been the playmaker on returns, receiving and defense.
These two are also best friends. They are so close, they are brothers. They know what each other is thinking and that will prove deadly for the Pirates.
The defense is led by a pack of Bulldogs like Jacob McLaughlin, Mike Smith, Joel Morrison, Devin Brockington, Antoine Carr and Josh and Justin Shaffer. This is the group that will bring out coach RobertsÕ Ò smash-mouthÓ football style.
The key to the game could be kicker Caleb Muir, who has been the pinnacle of consis-tency this season.
Aside from the blazing speed that Pasco hasnÕ t seen this season, they have not played in front of a better crowd.
The 12th man on the team is the Zephyrhills fans. They are loud and they support their community team. This loyal group knows that the 9-Mile War is the game of games and they will be there to help silence the Pirates.
Coach Roberts hasnÕ t been building a team. He has been building a family. They are a family of destiny.

Booker Pickett, Assistant Coach“It’s what you prepare for the whole season, the off-season and the summer. It’s the one game. There were other games, but there was only one game against Pasco. We were all friends, but from that kickoff to that last whistle, there are no friends. Afterwards, we encourage each other. That’s the Nine-Mile War.”
Kerry Ryman, Alumni“That game is everything. I played in that game in 1975-77 and it’s always a big game for the community. It doesn’t matter if it’s here or there. It’s always packed. It’s always a good game and this community always looks forward to it more than any other game during the year. It’s a great thing.”
Scott Davey, Assistant Principal“It means, a big crowd and hopefully at the end of the night on Nov. 4, it means a lot of happy Bulldogs.”
Steve Van Gorden, Principal“It’s high school football at its best. You have two rival communities. You have two groups of kids that are very spirited and passionate about their schools and the communities they live in. You have generations of families. You couldn’t ask for anything better when it comes to the Nine-Mile War. There are people talking about those games for generations. It’s going to be a huge game and I’m glad it’s going to be at Zephyrhills High School and Bulldog Stadium.”
Jamal Roberts, Quarterback“It means a lot. I grew up with those kids in my neighborhood. I always played against them. We would always be rivals on the field and then we would come home and talk about the game. It’s still the same way. We’re just more mature now. It’s going to be a good game.”
Reggie Roberts, Head Coach“When you have these two teams and you come here and see the stands packed and people line up along the rail, it’s a different ballgame. That’s when it all starts. This town used to shut down for this game. This city is great and this game is great. It makes you proud to be a Bulldog.”
What they’re saying about
Brian McDougal, Dade City Police OfficerÒ We used to have all kind of crazy stuff happen. I donÕ t see that any more.Ó
Ricky Giles, longtime Pasco assistant coachÒ ThereÕ s still going to be that camaraderie about the game. For now, weÕ re kind of handling things. You know how this thing goes, itÕ s kind of a seesaw. EverybodyÕ s going to come.Ó
Anthony Hyman, Pasco sophomore fullbackÒ WeÕ re both good teams, but honestly I think weÕ re going to win and finish undefeated.Ó
Rick Gavin, Pasco junior varsity coachÒ Pasco-Zephyrhills is always big, but this is basically a playoff game for us. If we lose it could be a three-way tie (with Fivay included). We donÕ t want that to happen.Ó
Amari Warren,Pasco High freshmanÒ I go every year to the 9-Mile War. I think weÕ re going to beat Zephyrhills.Ó
Jim Ward, Pasco assistant coachÒ ItÕ s huge. YouÕ re talking district championship for us. And itÕ s big for Zephyrhills because they win or theyÕ re out, to thereÕ s a lot riding on it.Ó

Four-time district champion Pirates are playoff-bound again
Sure, Pasco High has been dominant among county teams in recent years Ñ and everyone knows it. That is why this deep into the season the four-time district cham-pion Pirates can ill afford to overlook revi-talized Zephyrhills.
Although the Bulldogs have struggled and mustered just five wins in the previous two seasons, this year they have had some-what of a resurgence. After dropping the first two games, Zephyrhills became a legit-imate playoff contender this season and the 9-Mile War victory could go a long way in completing the turnaround.
Pasco coach Tom McHugh is well aware of that, as he is of every opponent gunning to knock his team from the unbeat-en ranks. Which is why he is challenged on a weekly basis to have his players focus on the task at hand rather than their 9-0 overall
record, 6-0 in Class 5A, District 6.Ò I just try to tell them about the sense of
entitlement and things like that,Ó said McHugh, Wesley ChapelÕ s former defen-sive coordinator who is in his fifth season as PascoÕ s head coach. Ò I tell them that David was a 40-point underdog to Goliath and that Michigan lost to Appalachian State (in a major college football upset). ThereÕ s any number of times you can go back in history and look up teams that won who shouldnÕ t have.Ó
That hunger is reflected in his players with highly touted Division I recruit Jacob Guy vowing to learn from a poor perfor-mance during last seasonÕ s region semifinal loss to eventual state champion Tampa Jefferson. The senior quarterback has a state champion or bust mentality.
Ò If they said they learned from it you have to believe them,Ó McHugh said of players echoing GuyÕ s sentiment.
Pasco, which had not made the playoffs for two straight seasons before McHughÕ s arrival, came within two games of their first state appearance since 1992 last season, making a fourth consecutive playoff run in the process. In all, 26 players graduated from that team but there has been no drop-off on the field or in the standings.
This season, the Pirates, who still claim the countyÕ s lone state title in 1992, already have eclipsed the school record of 21 con-secutive victories. Moreover, through nine games they have blown out their oppo-nents by scoring at least 50 points to force a running clock eight times.
Ò IÕ m happy, but I donÕ t know if IÕ m surprised,Ó McHugh said of his teamÕ s dominance. ÒW eÕ re playing better than everybody else.Ó
An indication of how things might play out in this yearÕ s 9-Mile War is reflected in how Pasco and Zephyrhills fared against upstart Fivay, which is on the verge of its first playoff season. The second-year Falcons defeated Zephyrhills in a 48-42 comeback last week with a playoff spot on the line.
By comparison, Pasco clobbered Fivay, 59-6.
Aside from the quarterback, who has thrown for 32 touchdowns, key players all season have been all-purpose offensive threat Janarion Grant who is effective as a running back and receiver, 1,000-yard rush-er David Emmanuel and wide receiver Trey Dudley-Giles. That trio has combined for 58 touchdowns.
Those skill players work behind a
revamped offensive line that could be even better than last yearÕ s bunch that helped lead the Pirates to an 11-1 overall mark that included a 10-0 record in the regular sea-son.
Ò I like what IÕ ve seen,Ó said line coach Brian Colding, noting that Ò they all saw playing time last year.Ó
On another note, not that Pasco needs a solid feeder program, but thatÕ s exactly what it has in a junior varsity team that just completed a perfect season. The JV Pirates went 7-0 and did not allow a single point all season.
With the JV doing so good, McHugh said, Ò ItÕ s good that they learn to win and they expect to win. They know how to work hard.Ó
Pasco won last yearÕ s version of the 9-Mile War 50-7 and leads the all-time series 36-17. Despite ZephyrhillsÕ turn-around and this FridayÕ s game being at Bulldog Stadium, look for a similar out-come as last season.
After all, the Pirates still dominate in this county.
Unbeaten Pasco can’t afford to overlook Zephyrhills

2011 PASCO PIRATES (7-0)
The four-time district champion Pirates are gearing up for a fi fth consecutive playoff appearance and second straight undefeated season. This year it’s state championship or bust for a school that in 1992 won the only state title in county history. Pasco appears to have the district title sewn up with the winner of the Zephyrhills hanging on to an outside shot at the playoffs.

20 | 9-mile war | Thursday, november 3, 2011 | The Zephyrhills news
Now in his fifth season as football coach of the Pasco Pirates, Tom McHugh has added another hat to his repertoire. He has taken over as that schoolÕ s athletic director.
McHugh replaced Jim Ward, an assis-tant in football and former softball coach who was PascoÕ s AD for seven years. Ward will continue coaching football.
Ò IÕ m happy. I donÕ t know if IÕ m sur-prised,Ó McHugh said of getting the AD job from among a handful of candidates. Ò Sometimes itÕ s better to have the reigns than to sit in the seat. It will be a lot easier after the football season.Ó
While McHugh will make contribu-tions to all school sports as the new AD, his contributions to the football program could not be more impressive since his arrival from Wesley Chapel, where he served as a defensive coordinator, in 2007. The Pirates have won four district championships with four straight playoff appearances during his tenure.
The fifth-year coach is aiming even higher in 2011. Coming off an unbeaten regular season and 11-1 overall record that included a region semifinal loss to state
champion Tampa Jefferson, Pasco is on the verge of duplicating its 10-0 mark.
More important, the team is gearing up for a deeper playoff run and with a 7-0 start is taking a state championship-or-bust approach to this season.
Ò Our main goal is to win the state championship,Ó said Jacob Guy, a highly recruited senior quarterback who said he learned from the playoff loss to Jefferson.
Added McHugh, Ò WeÕ re playing better than everybody else. I think they have pride in what they need to do.Ó
For his part, McHugh chooses not to look ahead and spouts the one-game-at-a-time clichŽ when asked about his teamÕ s chances to go further into the playoffs this year. Ward, however, is among the football assistant coaching staff well aware of McHughÕ s value to the program.
Ò The leadership that heÕ s brought to this program is awesome,Ó said Ward, who had been PascoÕ s AD for seven years. Ò Look in the five years that heÕ s been here. WeÕ re 42-10 over all, four-time district champions, one-time regional champion and three Sunshine Athletic Conference champion-ships.Ó
Those numbers speak for themselves, but they do not tell the whole story. Before McHughÕ s arrival the Pirates had a pen-chant for being undisciplined and penal-
ized often. A subsequent change in the locker room and how the team goes about its business now is no doubt reflected in the on-field performance overall.
Ò HeÕ s straight-up, straightforward,Ó said longtime assistant Ricky Giles. Ò Not only is he a good football coach, but heÕ s well-organized and he cares about the kids. Whatever he does heÕ s working hard at it at all times.Ó
Before his arrival, the Pirates had missed the playoffs in back-to-back sea-sons. That run followed two postseason berths in former coach Dale CaparasoÕ s four years at the helm. Caparaso is now coaching at Spoto in eastern Hillsborough County.
If you ask McHugh about the teamÕ s success in recent years, he credits players such as former quarterback Josh Johnson, now a Purdue defensive back; Jamie Byrd, a defensive back at Texas Christian University.
Ò Those kids are excellent athletes,Ó McHugh said of that pair and the rest of the players who made the turnaround possi-ble. Ò They just had to learn to play as a team. They see that it works.Ó
The coach added current Pirates like Guy, all-purpose standout Janarion Grant and wide receiver Trey Dudley-Giles to that list.
Ò TheyÕ re good football players,Ó McHugh said. Ò When they get their hands on the ball I like to watch.Ó
The Pirates have a three-game winning streak in the annual grudge match against arch-rival Zephyrhills and are once again the favorites for the 9-Mile War. McHugh and his players are not about to let the Bulldogs get in the way of their winning ways.
