Before leaving for winter break, employees should be sure to change phone voice-mail messages to indicate that the college will be closed over the holidays.

Academic Computing and Media Services will relocate during the break between semesters. The unit will move into Tech Ed 3-107 — space that is adjacent to the elevator entrance on the first floor of the Tech Ed 3 Building. The move will provide a short-term home until their final space is completed in part of the area formerly occupied by the Culinary Arts Program.

The staff of the Cypress College Chronicle has posted their first video news pod-cast at http://www.CyChron.Com. The Cypress Chronicle switched to podcasting this month when Time Warner closed Comcast’s Cypress studio, resulting in the can-cellation of The Chronicle’s CNC-Live, which had aired since the fall of 1999.

Opening Day activities will be held on Friday, January 12, 2007. Opening Day serves to kick off the new semester and provide impor-tant updates. @Cypress will return on January 11.

Donna Friess has earned the Cypress College Academic Senate’s nomina-tion for the Academic Senate of California Community College’s Hayward Award for “Excellence in Education.”

“We are proud to be able to forward such a wor-thy applicant, and we know that Donna’s commitment to students and work in the community will stand out at the state level!” said Cherie Dickey, president-elect of the Cypress College Academic Senate.

Donna is a member of the Speech Department fac-ulty and has been active in efforts that resulted in federal victims’ rights legislation.

The NOCCCD Board of Trustees has accepted the retirement of Marilyn Glattly, Cypress College Fine Arts Division Dean. The 25-year employee will leave Cypress College at the end of the academic year.

Automotive instructor Mike Klyde was featured in the December, 2006 edition of Hemmings Classic Car. The seven-page article and photo spread illustrates two classic cars — a 1966 Oldsmobile Toronado and a 1967 Cadillac Elorado — that he has restored.

CHARGERS BRIEFLYWarland Investments is Title Sponsor for 2007 Americana AwardsWarland Investments has secured the role of title

sponsor of the 2007 Americana Awards Banquet, which will be held on Saturday, February 24, 2007 in the Disneyland Hotel’s Grand Ballroom.

As the event’s top sponsor, Warland has presented a gift of $25,000 to the college.

Warland Investments is the major owner of the Cypress Business Park. The firm’s principals are John Law and Carl Robertson.

The local company follows another — Walter K. Bowman Real Estate — as the event’s title sponsor.

Americana’s first title sponsor was Toyota Motor Sales, USA, Inc.

The Americana Awards, the Cypress College Foundation’s largest fundraiser, help provide financial support to Cypress College students in the forms of scholarships and emergency loans. Revenue from the event also is used to augment college programs that don’t receive sufficient funding from the state budget.

More information is available from the Cypress College Foundation via e-mail or by calling (714) 484-7126.

Nursing, Dental Hygiene Students All Pass State Board ExamsIt was perfection for students who recently completed their nursing or dental hygiene studies. Both the

Nursing Program and Dental Hygiene programs at Cypress College have learned that their most-recent graduates earned a 100% pass rate for the state board exams. The results are an impressive reminder of the success of two of the college’s marquee academic programs.

Crews completed a “test pour” of concrete in a small section of the Phase II piazza restoration area. The work was done to ensure the proper mixture of the concrete used for the refurbished piazza level. If the test proves successful, work can then be completed in the rest of the Phase II area, which includes the section above the Student Activities Center and another that runs adjacent to the Fine Arts, Science/Engineering/Math and the Humanities buildings.

A successful pour will also likely result in a break-neck-speed piazza restoration along the area outside the main entrance to the Health Science area of Tech Ed 3. If the decision is made to proceed with the work, it will be done between December 19 and January 15. Crews would work double shifts to ensure the repair is com-pleted before the start of the semester. The only entrance to the building would be through the elevator on the ground floor, as the construction would block the main entrance on the second floor.

Work has been completed on the elevator adjacent to Tech Ed 1. That, in turn, has resulted in the removal of fencing on the ground level near the northwest corner of the pool. The elevator will become operational once inspections are completed (anticipated for mid January) and once the concrete is poured on the adjacent piazza. An inspection of the Business Building elevator will be conducted at the same time as the Tech Ed 1 elevator.

Rails are now being installed along the edges of the Phase I area of the piazza, which is above the former Culinary Arts area and extending to the Fine Arts and Cypress College Complex buildings.

The SEM Building is now officially on the California Community College System’s list of maintenance projects. The funding still needs final approval and would also require passage of a state bond measure.

Bids will be opened on December 12 for the remodel of the former Culinary Arts area and for Gym 2. The projects are the last of the bond projects being funded by Measure X.

From: Andrea HannonDate: December 8, 2006 9:44:59 AM PST

Dear Health Science Family, Cypress Staff Members and Friends,

It is with a sad heart that I need to inform you that our dear Pat Boer died last night shortly after 7 pm. She fought a valiant battle against breast cancer, but was not able to win that victory. Her daughter was able to arrive from Atlanta on Wednesday and was with her, along with husband Gary and many Cypress College friends. The date and time of the funeral services have not yet been set, but they will be held some time in the near future at Rose Hills Mortuary in Whittier. We will share that information as soon as it becomes available. If you wish to send notes of condolences to her husband and family members please feel free to drop them by the Health Science Division and we will forward them for you. In the meant time the best thing you can do in remembrance of Pat is to be kind, gentle and loving to your colleagues, family and friends. She was the consummate role model of how we should all be caring for and about each other.

Reaching Students

Here are two samples of efforts to reach students. At the left is an e-mail that will be distributed next week as a follow up to the first set of e-mails informing students of their registration date and time.

A key message (as illustrated below) is the fee reduction. This sample is a reduction of posters that have been hung on campus in a number of areas.
