2010 NEW J ER S EY J A CKA L S GAME NOTE SSUNDAY, AUGUST 8 - WORCESTER 4, NEW JERSEY 1Worcester, Mass. – Southpaw Zach Zuercher stifled the New Jersey Jackals through six innings as the Jack-als fell to the Worcester Tornadoes 4-1 on Sunday afternoon in the rubber game of the three-game series at Hanover Insurance Park.

Zuercher (2-2), who went winless through his first six starts of the season, earned his second straight vic-tory while turning in his third consecutive quality start. The 26-year-old left-hander allowed one unearned run on just three hits in six frames. Zuercher walked one batter while fanning five. He allowed just three singles to Jeff Grose, Dan Betteridge, and Carlos Sosa.

Worcester jumped out to an early lead against Jackals starter Jayson Miller (1-2), who took the loss. Miller surrendered four consecutive hits to start the bottom of the third inning with third baseman Omar Pena and first baseman Chris Colabello singling home runs to put Worcester up 2-0 before designated hitter Nick Salotti lifted a sacrifice fly to right field for the inning’s first out to make it 3-0. In the bottom of the fourth, catcher Alex Trezza crushed his sixth home run of the season to right center into the Holy Cross football stadium with the bases empty to help extend the Tornadoes advantage to 4-0.

The Jackals plated their only run in the top of the sixth inning with the assistance of three Tornadoes errors. Center fielder Adam Godwin led off with a walk. Later in the inning, Zuercher picked Godwin off first but shortstop Mark Minicozzi dropped the return throw from Colabello to allow Godwin to advance to second safely. Godwin later scored on sacrifice fly off the bat of first baseman Jabe Bergeron.

In the top of the ninth, New Jersey used a trio of pinch hitters to bring the tying run up to bat against Rick Asadoorian, but the Worcester closer got center fielder Adam Godwin to line out to first base with runners on the corners to notch his fourth save of the season and his second in as many days. Angel Flores had drawn a two-out walk while pinch hitting for catcher Dean Forthun before Kevin Clark rifled a single to right after taking Grose’s spot.

In his fifth start for the Jackals, Miller allowed four runs on seven hits with one walk and two strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings. New Jersey’s bullpen pitched well, with Mike Pontius and Edward Rodriguez combining to hold Worcester off the scoreboard over the final 2 1/3. Rodriguez stranded the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth after allowing a pair of singles and intentionally walking Trezza.

Worcester right-hander John Sluzarz added two scoreless innings of relief while stranding three runners on base to bridge the gap between Zuercher and Asadoorian.

2009: A RETROSPECTIVEDespite falling short of their goal of a Can-Am League title after being swept in the first round of the playoffs by the Worcester Tornadoes, the Jackals’ 2009 squad was one of the most successful in franchise history. In addition to taking the first-half title, New Jersey’s 55 wins were the most by a Jackals’ team since 2002. Consistency was also a big part of the Jackals’ success. As a team, New Jersey finished second in the league in both batting average (.283) and ERA (4.19), trailing Brockton in both categories. The Jackals were just one game better in the first half (28-19) than the second half (27-20) and saw a one-game difference in their record at home (27-20) and on the road (28-19). Jackals’ pitchers posted nine shutouts (five more than any other Can-Am League team) with A.J. Wideman serving as the starter for four of them (Quebec posted four shutouts while no other team had more than one). Conversely, Jackals’ pitchers were responsible for both of the league’s three-home run games (Sus-sex 3B Jeremy Hunt on 7/9 and Quebec DH Pete LaForest on 9/5). Perhaps the highlight of New Jersey’s 2009 campaign was its team-record 14-game winning streak, which began with a doubleheader sweep at Quebec on June 11 and ended with a loss to Worcester in game two of a doubleheader on June 25.

JOE CALFAPIETRAMANAGER - EIGHTH SEASON

The longest-tenured manager in the Can-Am League, 2010 marks Joe Calfapietra’s eighth season at the Jackals’ helm.

In 2009, Calfapietra was named the Can-Am League Manager of the Year after guiding the Jackals to the league’s first-half title and a playoff appearance. He also garnered Manager of the Year honors in 2004 when he led the Jackals to a Northeast League championship.

Calfapietra, 39, began his coaching career with the Northern League’s Duluth-Superior Dukes in 1994 before spending the 1995 and 1996 seasons with the Aberdeen Pheasants of the Prairie League. In 1997, Calfapietra joined manager Ed Ott’s coaching staff with the Allentown Ambassadors as Director of Baseball Operations. Calfapietra was named the Ambassadors manager in 2000 at the age of 29, making him the youngest manager in Northern League history. After posting an 85-90 managerial record in two seasons with the Ambassadors, Calfapietra left Allentown after five years to guide the expansion Gary SouthShore RailCats in their inaugural season in 2002. Calfapietra led Gary, which played its entire schedule on the road while waiting for its ballpark to be constructed, to a 35-55 team record and was named the Northern League Manager of the Year. Calfapi-etra joined the Jackals in 2003 and earned his second Manager of the Year award in 2004 when he guided New Jersey past the North Shore Spirit for the Northeast League title.

The Royersford, PA native played at Eastern College in Saint Davids, PA, where he was a two-time Division III All-American selection at first base. When he was not drafted out of college, Calfapietra turned to coaching and earned his Master’s Degree in Education. He has spent time collegiately as an assistant coach at Eastern College, a volunteer assistant at St. Joseph’s University, and as the hitting coach and recruiting coordinator at Villanova University.
