AICPA Council Explores Joint Venture to Offer New ManagementAccounting Designation, Reinforce Value of CPA Worldwide

The AICPA and the London-basedChartered Institute of ManagementAccountants (CIMA) are exploring thedevelopment of a new designation formanagement accounting, whilesupporting and promoting the U.S. CPAas the worldwide standard ofprofessional excellence in accounting.

The pathways for obtaining the newcredential would vary. Recognizing thesignificant educational and professionalbackground of U.S. CPAs, AICPA votingmembers with at least three yearsworking in management accounting ora financial management role wouldqualify for an accelerated route toobtaining the new designation. Non-voting AICPA members in the UnitedStates would not be eligible to obtainthe credential.

Membership in both the AICPA andthe state society delivers benefits formember CPAs as designation-holderswould receive a significant discount on

their annual credential fee.The proposed new designation

would draw on an exacting code ofconduct and ethics and a rigorouspathway for entry, and woulddemonstrate a combined competencyand expertise in managementaccounting, and global financial andbusiness management. CPAs holdingthe new designation would be furtherdistinguished as corporate financeprofessionals, combining managementaccounting with a broad spectrum offinancial expertise in corporate andpublic accounting.

The proposed new designationwould be issued by a joint venture onbehalf of the AICPA and CIMA, withmembership remaining with theexisting organizations. AICPA Presidentand CEO Barry Melancon, CPA, said:“High-quality management accountingprofessionals who combine expertisewith a deep commitment to ethics and

integrity serve the public interest. Thisjoint venture would help produce andrecognize professionals around theworld committed to excellence inmanagement accounting, enterpriseand performance strategy.”

The proposed new designation andthe supporting joint venture areconsistent with the AICPA’s goals topromote the U.S. CPA broadly, advancethe resources available for managementaccountants, create new globalnetworking opportunities for members, and provide an enhanced platform foradvocacy on behalf of the professionand the public interest. CIMA hasapproximately 180,000 members andstudents in 168 countries outside theUnited States. Collectively, the AICPAand CIMA represent the interests of550,000 professional members. CIMA,which has 29 offices around the world, would promote the U.S. CPA as well.

CPA Firms - Doing More with LessWith the current crunch on marketing

budgets that CPA firms are experiencingnationwide, have you been asked to do morewith less this past year? If so, how or whatdid you interpret that to mean? No onewould argue that the accounting industryhas struggled to find a path for growth inspite of shrinking budgets, long hours anddisgruntled, overworked partners and staff. How do you ask more from these CPAs andaccountants when they already may bestretched too thin?

I asked some members of the Associationfor Accounting Marketing (“AAM”) to sharesome innovative solutions they have used totackle marketing on a shoestring.

Jeanna Abbas, marketing director atGrand Rapids, Michigan-based Beene GarterLLP (1 office, 16 partners, 75 total staff),equated doing more with less to going on adiet. “You look at what you are currently’consuming‘ (where your budget is going)and evaluate what is beneficial and whatisn't. You might discover that, in a lot ofcases, the choices you are making are full of’empty calories‘—there’s no real return oninvestment. Then, you can start cuttingthings out, trimming down and makingmore appropriate choices that contribute toyour success,” Abbas says. “It is an on-goingprocess, by which you should regularly planahead, track, report and re-evaluate youractivities to further refine the process.”

While it may be tempting to try tostretch your time and budget to reach asmany niche areas as possible, “the key todoing more with less is shifting that mindsetto instead reach a defined target audience inas many ways as possible,” Abbas says.

NARROW DOWNTHE FOCUSBeene Garter LLP was able to identify

very specific target audiences based on theirprofessionals’ experiences, abilities anddesires, which were then matched withopportunities in the current marketplace. This enabled them to determine relevantactivities to regularly and effectively reachtheir target audience(s). They paid carefulattention to client care, prospect lists, keyreferral sources, organizations and events –all of which helped to solidify strong andeffective marketing campaigns.

Example: For years the firm marketed toprivately-owned medical practices. Whilethe firm had general expertise serving avariety of healthcare clients, it decided toconcentrate its time, resources andmarketing dollars on a specific type of

medical practice: dental practices. Thischanged the focus significantly. “We choseto completely saturate the dentalcommunity and then grow from there,”Abbas reports.

EMPOWERING OTHERS TO DOWHATYOUCAN’T

Sandy Johnson, marketing manager ofHouston-based Briggs & Veselka Co. (2offices, 15 partners, 150 total staff), overseesa small marketing department with largeaspirations. “With so many objectives and along list of things to tackle, I was feelingoverwhelmed,” she says.

The key was leveraging the work to theright people. “Once I started lookingoutside myself, I was able to empower staffmembers to tackle some of the projects thatI was struggling with. To my great surprise, Ifound that we had individuals right underour noses who were ready, willing and ableto take on some very worthwhile projects,”Johnson says. For instance, she tapped theresources of her IT director for the annualstaff meeting video, and asked other keystaff to assist with the tracking of proposals.

Creating task force groups is another ofSandy’s secret weapons. “I asked for

We have to regularly, strategically andengagingly communicate the value of theiractivities (just like we communicate thevalue of our services). By staying focused, planning ahead, delegating tasks andreporting successes, our staff has a clear ideaof exactly what they need to do andwhy/how it is valuable!”

Both marketing professionals reportedthat compartmentalizing a daunting taskinto manageable sections – either bycreating specific niche-focused marketingcampaigns or effective internal leadershipteams – made big projects seem lessintimidating.

These case studies are inspiring andprovide encouraging examples of ways thatyour firm can empower staff by tapping intotheir passions and talents. It proves thateveryone really can contribute to the growthof a CPA firm.

DELEGATE APPROPRIATELYA lesson learned is that you can’t be all

things to all people. This goes forindividuals and for CPA firms. Learningyour sweet spot as a firm can help you saveconsiderable marketing dollars and will aidyou in a more proactive approach to yourmarketing efforts. When you think in termsof a specific niche, the appropriate tacticsbecome clearer, whether that means theright annual conference, appropriate socialmedia forums, a meaningful networkinggroup, or a targeted publication. Niche-specific strategies allow you to engage inproactive marketing that will get you infront of the right audience. You gain thefreedom to say “no” to sponsoring an eventsimply because you were asked—and “yes”to one that will put you in contact withyour target demographic.

The same theory applies to you as a

marketer. Where do your strengths lie? Asan individual, you are better at certainthings than others – such as beingtechnologically savvy, a good motivator oran active listener. Leverage your ownstrengths as well as those of yourprofessionals as best you can whileacknowledging their areas for improvement. As Lee Iococca, the former president andCEO responsible for the revival of ChryslerCorporation during the 80s, said, “I hirepeople brighter than me and then I get outof their way.”

EVALUATE & RE-EVALUATEAnother important factor that aided

these CPA firms in doing more with less wastheir ability to take a giant step back toevaluate where they were, how they gotthere and where they wanted to go.Maintaining a strong focus on their goalsfueled their commitment to closely trackand evaluate the efforts they took in orderto evaluate the effectiveness of theprofessionals’ activities. This also helped tohold people accountable.

“The key to asking more from ourprofessional staff has been in trackingeveryone's efforts,” Abbas says. “As amarketing department we have had to dothe same thing with our staff as we do withour clients, prospects and referral sources.
