Dear Parishioners, The past two weekends so many in our parish brought do-nations for the Uncle Pete’s Ministry School Supply Drive, helping children in need on Chicago’s West Side start the year with the items they need for a good school year. Thank you for your generosity. I am reminded that our own school and religious education programs will open soon. I encourage all parents to explore the options we offer so that your children can learn about Jesus, the Catholic faith, and have a strong foundation throughout their lives. Providing your child with a solid education in faith, and then living your faith through at-tending Mass regularly as a family, is a gift that cannot be replaced by sports, lessons, or entertainment. Religious Education is what used to be called “catechism” or “CCD.” Classes are offered in our parish school building from 1st through 8th grades, on Wednesdays from 5:00-6:30 pm or on Thursdays from 6:30-8:00 pm. Classes begin September 18th and 19th with opening Masses on each evening. Our parish is blessed to have many long-time teachers who truly love this ministry, and parents can help as teachers, substitute teachers, assistants, and hall moni-tors. Registration is available in the Parish Office. For in-formation, please contact Mac Karaban, Pastoral Associate, at 847-966-3269. Our parish school will begin classes on August 20th. St. John Brebeuf School offers education from 3-year-old pre-school through 8th grade. Not only are children given an excellent academic program to prepare them for high school, they also receive daily instruction in religion and attend weekly Mass. Parents and family are often active volunteers, helping with activities, events, sports, and many other things. For information, please contact Dr. Mary Maloney, Principal, at 847-966-3266. GLADD, which stands for Giving Love Apostolate for the Developmentally Disabled, is another of our parish reli-gious education programs. I’m happy to say that GLADD is now in its 50th year! Many of you may have heard Lois Kozeny speak last week at Masses as she asked for volun-teers. This ministry is entirely run by Lois and her tireless army of over 100 volunteers. Together they provide reli-gious instruction for young people who have developmen-tal disabilities. The program is based on the relationship between one volunteer catechist and one child, with infor-mation presented through song, activities, and sensory im-ages so that the students experience the love of Jesus. Ses-sions happen every other week on Saturdays, Tuesdays, or Wednesdays. For information, please contact Lois Kozeny at 847-966-5338.

Finally, our parish has a religious education program espe-cially for preschoolers and kindergarteners. The Joy In Je-sus program operates in a “Sunday School” format. Parents drop off their children at the school, attend the 10:45 am Sunday Mass, and then pick up their little ones after Mass. The students have a great time, and parents can focus on their own worship at Mass. The program begins in Septem-ber. For more information please contact Charlotte Lind-quist at 847-470-1434. The education of the next generation is one of the most im-portant tasks we have. I count on each parishioner to spread the word about our programs -- please give a copy of this letter to your friends, neighbors, and family members. Your attitude and referrals are greatly appreciated. Word of mouth is best! Thank you for your support of our programs! Fr. Mike Meany

Drodzy Parafianie W ciągu ostatnich dwóch weekendów wielu z Was wspomogło Szkolną Misję Wujka Pete'a, pomagając potrzebującym dzieciom z West Side w Chicago rozpocząć rok szkolny z potrzebnymi przyborami.

Ks. Mike Meany

Consider Sharing Your Faith with Children

The SJB Religious Education Program is seeking enthusiastic people who want to set younger hearts on fire with the love of God by sharing their faith and traditions. In addition to Catechist teachers, we are also in need of substitute teachers, assistants, and hall monitors. Listen to your heart and see if God is calling you. Please contact Mac Karaban, Pastoral Associate, or Nancy, at 847-966-3269.

JOY IN JESUS The “Joy in Jesus” Sunday program is open to children ages 3 ½ (by September 1) through Kindergarten age. Classes are held in the school during the 10:45 Mass.

The program was formed to provide children with a basic foundation for a future understanding of Christian revelations. Emphasis is given to development of self-awareness in the children and their place in the Christian community. The children in the “Joy in Jesus” 2018-2019 program ended their session with a prayer service. The children prepared for this celebration for several weeks by mak-ing a celebration tablecloth and other symbolic items depicting topics discussed throughout the year. Registration will be held on Sunday, September 8th and 15th with classes beginning Sunday, September 22nd. The registration fee for the year is $40.

Mission Appeal August 3-4 This weekend Fr. Moises Sabaja of the Society of African Mission will be speaking at all the Masses as part of the annual Mission Appeal. The Society of African Missions (SMA Fathers) have served in 17 African countries for more than 160 years. In most settings SMA Fathers work in the most abandoned areas building new churches and missions. This reflects the charism of the congrega-tion: first evangelization, which is the proclamation of the Gospel to those who have

not yet heard, especially the poor and most abandoned. SMA Fathers also provide basic needs such as build-ing schools, water projects and providing for health centers. Schools provide formal education and religious education to both children and adults. Water projects are important as most of the abandoned communities have no clean water, which leads to increased water born diseases. Health centers serve the survivors of Ebo-la disease. SMA Fathers also work to build peace in countries affected by war and insecurity.

Please give a big welcome to Fr. Moises Sabaja, and thank you for your generosity!

National Night Out at St. John Brebeuf

Tuesday, August 6th From 6 – 9 pm, SJB Courtyard

National Night Out is a national community-building campaign that promotes po-lice-community partnerships. Together, we are making communities safer, more caring places to live. Police Departments nationwide all hold similar events which enhance the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while bringing

back a true sense of community. In Niles, we bring together various village departments and local businesses in a collaborative effort to produce and promote crime prevention ideas to local residents. The event includes fun activities for all the family, adults and children, and it will include free food and givea-ways to learning about different safety prevention tips. This year we have a live reptile show, a donut eating contest, a bouncy house and a dunk tank where you can have your chance at dunking a police officer. The night ends with a flashlight walk through the neighborhood to pro-mote community connectivity. You can bring your own flashlight or the Niles Police will be handing out glow sticks. Mark your calendars for Tuesday, August 6th from 6 – 9 pm and bring the kids and grandkids to our grounds for support. We hope to see everyone there!

August 4: Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

In the Gospel, Jesus tells the parable about the

rich man who selfishly stored all his grain and goods only to die, and not enjoy his abundance anyway. What we struggle all our lives to learn is that life does not consist of possessions nor our perceived security, but of being pos-sessed by God.

This week, as you give your gift to the Society of St. Vin-cent de Paul you are realizing that in giving you indeed re-ceive.

Have you considered joining the Society of St. Vincent de Paul? Is there a family you know who needs assistance? Please call the Society of St. Vincent de Paul so that together we can help the suffering and poor.

All information will be strictly confidential. St. John Brebeuf Parish Office (847) 966-8145

Wincentego a Paulo? Jeśli znasz rodzinę która potrzebuje po-mocy prosze zadzwoń do naszego Stowarzyszenia St. Vincent de Paul. Razem możemy pomóc cierpiacym i potrzebującym.
