One of my seminary classmates, who happens to be a huge Star Wars fan, recently shared

the following:

JJ Abrams' task in The Force Awakens (and in Star Trek, for that matter) is a

phenomenal analogy for ministry.

* Tell the old, well known story in a dramatically new way, while honoring the ways it's

been told before.

* Make space for new personalities, while letting the old personalities play their roles.

* Invite a new audience without alienating the old audience.

* Tell the story in a way that pulls many generations together.

I think he nailed it! Excellent advice that we should all take to heart as together we say goodbye

to 2015 and welcome the new year with eagerness and anticipation.

On Epiphany (Wednesday, January 6) we’re going to follow my classmate’s advice and tell

the story of the Magi in a new and dramatic way – we’re having an Epiphany Pageant! No matter

your age, all are invited to participate in the pageant by becoming a cast member. We’ll need

your voices as the pageant has many speaking parts (but don’t worry – there are no lines to

memorize just scripts to read from. Parents can help younger children read their parts). All are

invited to dress in costume (some costumes are on hand). This will be a fun, group activity that

all can enjoy.

Jessica is coordinating the pageant. Please email her (or call the church office if that’s more

convenient) and let her know you’re willing to take part in the pageant. Also, plan to come to the

pageant rehearsal which will take place on Sunday, January 3 following the 10:45 service. Being

present at the rehearsal will help smooth the edges of our pageant production.

After the pageant, we’ll celebrate Holy Eucharist (I intend to invite all the children to come

stand around the altar during the Great Thanksgiving) and then process out of church to the

north 40, i.e., the north end of the Jefferson Street parking lot, and burn the Christmas greenery.

We need fuel for the fire so be sure to drop off a branch of your tree and/or of the greenery you

used to decorate your home or office for Christmas!!!

The Annual Meeting of the parish will be held in the Parish Hall on Sunday, January 24

following the 8:30 service. Elsewhere in this newsletter you will find information about the Annual

Meeting, the nominees for Jr. Warden and Vestry and the process used to “nominate someone

from the floor” for one of these positions. Please read this information carefully paying attention

to the deadline for submission of “floor nominations.”

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!

During the past few months we have had a group of high school seniors do their Senior Project at Saints’ Brew. The seniors involved with this project were Alex Hart,

Hannah Wright and Bess Buskirk. They worked for about an hour before school assisting our Tuesday crew with preparing the waffles for breakfast. The group was a tremendous assistance and in addition they set up a food drive and collected cereal, canned fruit, and personal items that were used at Saints’ Brew and other canned vegetables that were given out during our Saints’ Brew Christmas dinner. We really enjoyed working with them!

The last week of January, Saints’ Brew will again participate in the Point in Time count of homeless individuals in the Tupelo area. We will, along with volunteers and staff from the S.A.F.E program, be asking our homeless guests some questions that will hopefully assist them in getting their housing needs addressed.

Many of our supporters have not had the opportunity to see Saints’ Brew in action. If you want to stop by any day while we are serving our guests, please feel free to do so. We start cooking at about 6:15 and serve breakfast from 7:00 to 8:30. Saints’ Brew has evolved tremendously from its conception and a visit will give you an occasion to see our ministry. Our breakfast counts have continued to be strong the last couple of months. We have seen many “new” faces along with our regulars; therefore, we continue to need your support. As usual, we can always use creamer, sugar, cereal (no Cheerios, please), canned fruit and coffee. Financial donations are always welcome! As I say each month, thank you for your support!

CHRISTIAN FORMATION

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, youth and adult Sunday School will not meet on Sunday, January 24. Our annual Parish Meeting will be held that day at 9:30 a.m. in the Parish Hall. All confirmed communicants 16 years of age and older are eligible to vote in the elections and are encouraged to attend the meeting.

Sundays @ 9:30 a.m. A look back at what we explored with your children in 2015. . .

Catchesis of the Good Shepherd. . .

Children 3 years old-K explored the way in which the Magi responded when God’s slow and careful plan reaches a moment of fruition in the birth of Jesus. They explored the meaning of the parables, The Hidden Treasure, The Growing Seed and The Pearl of Great Price. They explored the city of Jerusalem to understand that Jesus was a real person who was born, lived, died, rose again in the land of Israel and that the resurrection was the fulfillment of God’s plan. They learned gestures used in the celebration of the Eucharist and explored the relationship between Jesus, the Good Shepherd and humankind. They also learned the sign of the cross and how to exchange the Peace.

Children in 1st-3rd grades explored the parable of The True Vine, The Good Samaritan and The Found Coin. They explored the empty tomb and the resurrection as the historical “evidence” that forms the bedrock of our faith. They also explored the gift of light and life of the Risen Christ in the sacrament of baptism. They studied The Lord’s Prayer phrase by phrase, lifting up Jesus’ model for prayer and explored what Jesus’ is trying to tell us about prayer. The children received their own Bibles for their use in this atrium. They worked with La Fettuccia, the long blue ribbon that explores the big picture (globalita) of the history of the kingdom of God.

Children in 4th-6th grades explored The Plan of God as worked out in the Bible and human history. They explored the growth of the Kingdom of God and the paradigm of Creation-Redemption-Parousia served as a guide for a more thorough exploration of scripture. They learned about Abraham’s journey in faith, focusing on worship during his time and the nomadic life at that time. They studied the maxims focusing on the order and rules of creation, and the rules of humankind, God’s order and our place in it. They examined Rite II of the Holy Eucharist and its structure, including the prayers of the Liturgy of the Word, the preparation of the Gifts, the Eucharistic prayer and Communion. They also examined the Propers of the Eucharist, what they are and how they change throughout the liturgical year. They studied the Creation Typology, with a focus on Adam and The Garden of Eden.

The youth in 7th–12th grades delved in to such topics as football’s “deflategate” controversy as they examined God’s desire for us to live our lives with integrity. They discussed how social media feeds are full of pictures of dresses, tuxes and couples around Prom time and talked about relationships, specifically about how God pursues us and the hearts of all humanity. They explored the impact of technology on our ability to live as faithful Christians and about Facebook’s announcement of a new “dislike” button and how learning empathy can shape our spiritual lives. They also discussed our Christian response to the Syrian refugee crisis and how to find and provide community.

These are just some of the topics we explored and as you can see, our time with your children is very full and our conversations with them are always enlightening. We look forward to our time with them in the new year, as we continue helping them explore and learn to live out their faith.
