Faculty of Arts

Change in name of the School of Librarianship (continued)

Courses offered by the School, while dealing with libraries and archives a s

institutions, are also concerned generally with the creation, use and management o f

information in all its forms. The fact is reflected in the titles and descriptions o f

many courses . This situation is common throughout the world ; over half of the

schools in North America and the United Kingdom therefore include the wor d

'information' in their names. Similarly, to an increasing extent graduates are findin g

employment not in libraries and archives but in the information sector generally a s

consultants, researchers, editors, broadcasters, etc.

In the interest of general understanding, this School's name should reflect more

accurately the nature of its concerns and curriculum. Accordingly it is recommende d

that the name of the School be changed from the School of Librarianship to th e

School of Library, Archival and Information Studies .

The motion was put and carried .

Dr. Dennison raised a query concerning the effect of new policies with regard t o

summer session courses and the potential impact on enrolment . Vice—President Smith

stated that he hoped to be in a position to report on this matter at the next meeting of

Senate .

Winter Session Enrolmen t

The Registrar reported that although late registration and registration in the

Faculty of Graduate Studies was continuing, preliminary figures indicated a sligh t

decrease in Winter Session enrolment. As of September 11, 1984 it appeared that

enrolment would be down in the order of five hundred students from enrolment in th e

1983—84 Winter Session .

Winter Session Enrolment (continued)

All of the reported decrease was accounted for in first year enrolment . The

Registrar reported that the no–show rate for new first year students was up from a

previous twenty percent to approximately thirty-three percent . Preliminary enrolmen t

data indicated new first year enrolment was down by about fourteen percent from th e

quota set by Senate and by about fifteen percent from new first year enrolment in th e

1983-84 Winter Session .

Dean Will requested that a survey be conducted to determine the reasons new firs t

year students admitted to the University did not register . The Chairman indicated tha t

such a survey would be investigated.

The following report had been circulated for information :

"There are three full-time members of the academic staff of the college ; they arejoined by a full-time programme coordinator and counsellor and a number o fpart—time assistants in providing academic, chaplaincy and counselling service swithin the university community .

Graduate credit courses in Patristic Theology have been offered as well as severa lnon-credit introductory courses in Theology . These latter courses are open to al land are attended by undergraduates and graduates, many of whom are i nEducation. Students fulfilling the requirements of these non-credit course sreceive letters of academic recommendation which are given consideration b yCatholic School Boards in their hiring procedures . These courses, in a relativel ysmall way, meet a need in the preparation of teachers for some religiousl yaffiliated schools .

Throughout the month of June, 1983, the college, in conjunction with the Cardina lCarter Centre for Bioethics in Toronto, presented an Institute on Bioethics . Therewere seventeen participants, representing various branches of health care service .The Institute was conducted by two visiting professors from the Faculty o fTheology of the University of St . Michael's College and the Toronto School o fTheology .

Members of the college staff have taught or been otherwise involved in th efollowing University of British Columbia departments or programmes : French,English, Classics, Arts I, Continuing Education, Athletics . Besides somepublication in the area of Patristic studies and, in connection with the Genera lAssembly of the World Council of Churches and the papal visit, in Scripture andEcclesiology, the staff has been involved in the broader civic community throug htalks at and participation in professional development days, conferences and othe rgatherings of teachers. Discussions and planning with the Vancouver Catholi cPublic School Board continue with a view to expanding the college's curren tacademic Theology offerings through certificate, diploma and, eventually ,graduate degree programmes related to teacher education. Another full-timestaff member, now completing a doctoral programme with concentration onCatechetics, will join the staff next year .

Report from St . Mark's College (continued)

"The library collection continues to grow and is supervised by Mrs. FannyWoodsworth, a retired member of the University Library staff ; she is assisted a tarranged times during the year by a visiting librarian from St . Weregret that financial considerations hinder our acquisitions being registered in th eUniversity catalogue .

The college remains the centre for The University of British Columbia Roma nCatholic Chaplaincy and, with it, has sponsored lecture series, panel discussion sand other presentations on matters relating faith to intellectual, social, moral an deconomic aspects of life . Parts of the building are used periodically by universit ydepartments and programmes .

The present Principal has submitted his resignation, and we await the appointmen tof a successor by the Board of Management of the college ."

Report from Regent College

The following report had been circulated for information :

"In accordance with the requirements of The University of British Columbia fo raffiliated colleges, it is my pleasure to report to Senate on the activities o fRegent College for the period outlined .

During the year past we have again mounted a significant summer school program ,reaching to professional perople from a wide geographical and vocationsl range .Visiting faculty included theologians as well as scholars like Professor Donal dMcKay of the University of Keele, whose research and teaching was of anintegrative nature . In our full-time academic programs, we averaged about 25 0full-time equivalent students, with part-time students bringing the totals t oapproximately 400. At the convocation on May 7th, the following diplomas anddegrees were awarded:

Diploma in Christian Studies (I year, post-graduate)

9 1Master of Christian Studies (2 year, with thesis)

20Master of Theological Studies (2 year, with examination)

In 1983 Regent College was granted "Candidate for Accredited" status from th eAssociation of Theological Schools in the United States and Canada . This is give nto a school, following an association visit, that is expected to meet the criteri afor full accreditation when the self-study is submitted . It was the college's firs tapplication for such, and we were pleased at the response . Our target forcompletion of the self-study is late May 1984, with a visit from an accredidatio nteam expected in the 1984-85 year .

Report from Regent College (continued)

"Faculty/student ratios continue at the same level, with several additiona lappointments made during the year . In particular, I would note the appointment ,after a full search, of Dr . William J . Dumbrell, to the position of Professor o fBiblical Studies . Dr . Dumbrell, who is expected to take up his post in September ,is currently Vice-Principal and Professor of Moore College, Sydney, and Professo rof Biblical Studies at the University of Sydney .

Faculty at the college continue active in publciation, with papers read at majo rprofessional societies . At least four books and over twenty articles were release dduring the year. The college continues an active encouragement of scholarl yactivity through a liberal sabbatical policy and appropriate teaching loads .

Library facilities at the college (jointly held with Carey Hall) have grown this yea rto over 25,000 catalogued volumes which, in addition to contracted services a tVancouver School of Theology, have been adequate for the degree programs . Iwould like to pay tribute to the library staff at U .B.C. which continues fruitfu lcooperation with Regent and V .S.T. in the development of an increasingl ysophisticated theological collection in the university complex .

Also during the year the college was pleased to provide modest support to th eDepartment of Classics in its archaeological project at Capernaum . It is the hopeof both the college and the department that this project will increasingly involv estudents and faculty from both institutions .

Finally, I would thank Professor Terry Brown for another year of usefu lrepresentation from the Senate of U .B.C. on the Senate of the college. It has alsobeen a pleasure for the principal of the college to serve on the Senate of th eUniversity, as well as on the Curriculum Committee . If there are any ways i nwhich the college faculty can be of further assistance to the fulfillment of th euniversity's goals, we are anxious to explore such ."
