Preview of Next Sunday’s Readings Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time

June 19, 2016 First reading: Zechariah 12:10-11, 13:1 Second reading: Galatians 3:26-29 Gospel: Luke 9:18-24 A reading from the second Book of the Prophet Zechariah Thus says the LORD: I will pour out on the house of David and on the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and petition; and they shall look on him whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him as one mourns for an only son, and they shall grieve over him as one grieves over a firstborn. On that day the mourning in Jerusalem shall be as great as the mourning of Hadadrimmon in the plain of Megiddo. On that day there shall be open to the house of David and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, a fountain to purify from sin and uncleanness. A reading from the first letter of Saint Paul to the Galatians Brothers and sisters: Through faith you are all children of God in Christ Jesus. For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free person, there is not male and female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's descendant, heirs according to the promise. A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke Once when Jesus was praying in solitude, and the disciples were with him, he asked them, "Who do the crowds say that I am?" They said in reply, "John the Baptist; others, Elijah; still others, 'One of the ancient prophets has arisen.'" Then he said to them, "But who do you say that I am?" Peter said in reply, "The Christ of God." He rebuked them and directed them not to tell this to anyone. He said, "The Son of Man must suffer greatly and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed and on the third day be raised." Then he said to all, "If anyone wishes to come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it."

Religious Education Office Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time June 12, 2016 Sunday’s Gospel, Luke 7:36-8:3 Reflecting in God’s Word The woman in today's Gospel was really sorry for her sins. She knew that she had sinned greatly. She wanted to see Jesus to tell him how sorry she was. On the other hand, the Pharisee didn't think he had sinned very much. Matter of fact, he didn't even treat Jesus with common hospitality indicating that he didn't really have much faith in Jesus' message. Like the woman, our tears can be cleansing. Can you remember a time when forgiveness felt good? Maybe you forgave someone or perhaps another person forgave you. One or both of you may have cried. It is through our faith in God and in each other that we can be healed and move toward the Kingdom. Bringing the Gospel Into Your Family On one paper plate, draw a smiling face. On another plate, draw a frowning face. Go around the table asking each person to hold both plates. Looking at the frowning plate, think of a time when you hurt someone apart from your family. Holding the smiling face, recall how the hurt was resolved. Or if it hasn't been resolved, how might it be. Other people at the table may share ideas and impressions. After everyone has had a chance to share a story, think about how your family's experiences are similar to those of the sinful woman. How does forgiveness help bring peace in our lives? REGISTRATION: Will be announced. Question of the Week Children: When is it hard for you to forgive someone who has hurt you? What can help you forgive? Adults: Whom does your Christian faith call you to forgive right now? How hard will this be for you?

Implement safety rules for kids going to summer camp Summer camp is a time-honored tradition for kids. Whether it’s an all-day camp or cabin sleepaway, kids can get out of the house, learn new skills, and make friends. Parents who send their kids off to camp should be sure to research the camp and the counselors who will be watching their kids. If your child is going to sleep-away camp, check in by phone or mail regularly. Ask questions and ensure that your child is safe and cared for at any camp. For a copy of the VIRTUS® article “Summer Camp Preparation” email [email protected] or call (213) 637-7227.
