L orenzo Ruiz is the first Filipino saint. He is also the first Filipino martyred for the Christian Faith. Lorenzo Ruiz was a layman, married, and had two sons and a daughter. Born in Binondo, Manila, about 1600, he was educated in the school of the Dominicans there. He served as an altar boy

and later was a helper and clerk-sacristan in the church of Binondo. He was a member of the Confraternity of the Rosary. He made his living probably as a calligrapher, one who renders documents in beautiful penmanship for private or official use. To be sure, that work denoted an accomplished and educated person, especially at a time when many an illustrious personage was far from excelling in this art. An adverse event made him leave the Philippines in 1636. When he was in his late twenties or early thirties, he became involved or was accused of being involved in a criminal case, the circumstances of which are far from clear. Whether he was involved or not, one thing was clear, he was afraid that, as a consequence of a trial or mistrial, he might be given a death sentence. After joining a group of missionaries bound for Japan where Christians were being persecuted, he was arrested and imprisoned together with his companions. He underwent inhuman tortures and valiantly confessed his Christian Faith. Refusing to renounce his Faith, he told his executioner that he was ready to die for God and a thousand times over again for Him. On September 27, 1637, he was hung from a gallows by his feet, his body falling into a pit. After two days of agony, he died of bleeding and suffocation. His body was cremated and the ashes thrown into the sea. He and fifteen companions, martyred in the same persecution, were beatified by Pope John Paul II in Manila on February 18, 1981 and elevated to full honors of the altar by canonization on October 18, 1987 in Rome. Their feast day is on September 28th.

FROM THE PASTOR

UPDATE AND PERSPECTIVE

“Church Improvements” We are pleased that "opening up" the chapel area and relocating the Stations of the Cross in the nave of the church have been so well received by parishioners. What is next? Jerzy Sokolowski, our maintenance engineer, will remove the radiators from our old heating and cooling system. They were disconnected long ago and are useless "eyesores." He plans to cover the empty spaces with plaster board and repaint the walls. These have been inexpensive improvements thanks Jerzy's multiple skills and talents. More on "Church Improvements" in weeks to come. “The Second Annual San Lorenzo Festival” Last year, Fr. Joseph Sia, who had served as a deacon here before his priestly ordination, returned to celebrate a Mass of Thanksgiving. His Mass coincided with the Feast of the first canonized saint, San Lorenzo Ruiz de Manila. It was a celebration that concretely demonstrated how an ethnic festival can also enlarge the broader community's awareness of being "Catholic.” Two weeks ago, the Filipino Prayer Group invited parishioners at large to hear more about San Lorenzo. Deacon Rod Ranola, who was unable to acquire a film on San Lorenzo, made a “power point” presentation about him. It was an informative introduction to this relatively new saint , his origin, place in Filipino culture, and significance as a lay missionary and martyr. We hope that many will choose to participate in our second annual Mass in honor of San Lorenzo this Sunday at noon. All are cordially invited to the reception after Mass. A special thanks to the Filipino Prayer Group for their devotion, service, and hospitality.

We will keep a peaceful vigil, praying for an end to abortion in our country and respect for the holiness of all life. Each person who signs up will pray for one hour in front of the Albany Medical-Surgical Center (which performs late-term abortions), located about 5 miles from our parishes at 5086 N. Elston Avenue just west of Cicero at Carmen Street in Chicago. Both Fr. Luczak and Fr. May have given their approval of this holy work. Sign up is taking place in the Holy Family Room after all Masses today or by calling the RE Office this week at 847/l966-1180. A LITTLE CHANGE MAKES A BIG DIFFERENCE

As we prepare to observe Respect Life Month in October, stop by the Holy Family Room TODAY and pick up a baby bottle or two. Then fill the bottle(s) with your spare change each day. Every penny, nickel, dime, quarter, dollar bill, etc. will be sent to the Women’s Center to encourage and support their pro-life work, which includes counseling, ultra sounds, material and spiritual support for pregnant women so that they will carry and give birth to their unborn children. Please undertake this holy effort on behalf of life, for as the theme of Respect Life month states, “Every child brings us God’s smile.” Filled bottles are due back the weekend of Oct. 31-Nov. 1.

Say No

No need to subscribe to all channels of cable If all you'll see there is junk which makes you less able To see real beauty, purity and goodness in all people You don't need to have cable to be a true Christ's disciple

No need to be wealthy and in care-free living When around the world there are lots of people dying Don't be blind, don't leave them begging You don't need all your wealth to honor the King

No need to have the fastest computer If it only helps you become a faceless wanderer Lose the internet connection, forget about the chatter You don't need to have a computer to share a friend's laughter

No need to get yourself a hard, alcoholic drink That will dangerously put you into the sure brink Of relapse into addictive behaviors and habits that stink You don't need to have booze to feel good in a blink

No channels of cable, or expensive items from the mall No fast computer, or booze from a glass, tall and small All other worldly things that tempt or cause you to sin Say "No" to them, and the angels on your side will win

ADDING NAMES TO THE PARISH SICK LIST It has always been the policy of St. Isaac Jogues to offer our parish community an opportunity to pray for those parish-ioners who are ill and in need of our prayers. We have tried to keep close track of these names for our Bulletin as they are made available to us. However, now we face an important privacy issue, very much like the issues faced by hospitals, health institutions, and certainly by other parishes. We cannot (by law) publicly let our parish community know the health status of any of our members without their permission. We appreciate the fact that often friends, neighbors, and acquaintances wish to do something special for a person who is ill, and ask to place their name on the list to be prayed for. While their intentions are surely good, we simply can no longer accept names in this manner. We will institute a new process regarding calling in names for the Bulletin list. Names for the sick list placed in the Bulletin have to be called in by the person who is ill, or by a member of their family. At the time they call in the name, they will be asked whether they are the sick person him/ herself, or a member of their family, and if they give permission for the name to be placed on the list. They will be asked for the cor-rect spelling of the sick person's name. If a family member, they will be required to give their name for our records. Thank you for your patience regarding this new process. We wish to do all we can to offer our parish community the opportunity to offer prayers for those who are ill — but we must also be cognizant of the fact that all members of our con-gregation are entitled to their privacy in this regard.
