LOGINOVA, M.M. (Zool. Institue. Audany of Sckncc. Lcningrd. USSR): PsyUidr CPsyUoida, Homopiem) of the Cpiury isiandr and Mdeha. Commentur. BioL 81.37 pp. (1976). This paper u the fint to contah a suumy and dcsuiption of the psyUid fauna from the nonhern iriandr of MacPronaia. AU the 29 rpecies b t d below ate na>rded from this tenitory for the fmt time.

Authw'r uddmss: DI. M.M. Loginova. 2nd lnrtitute of the Acadany of Sciencu, La@%! 8-16), the USSR.

In this study 1 made use of the collections of Prof. Hakan Lindbcrg, who visited the Canary Islands and Maderia several times (1926-1963). This paper, written in respectifui memory of Prof. Lindberg and dedicated to him, completes my d y s i s of hk mcxt interesting collections of the Psylloidea fauna from north-western Africa, a temtory which up till now has been p d y investigated as rqards this group of insects.

The species dealt with hen inciude psyliids coilected by Dr. Remane from Temrife in 1954. These collections were sent to me for investigation by Prof. W. Wagner (Hamburg), to whom 1 edpress my sincere gratitudc.

Description are given her of two genera and 20 species up tü1 now unknown to the scientific wodd. The holotypes and paratypes are in the keeping of the Zoological Mwum in Helsinki (Finland) and of the Zoological Institute of the Academy of Scienees (Leningrad, the USSR).

The mcasurements are given in millimetres, and ihe abbreviations in the mcasurement list are the same as in the author's paper on the Psyllids of Morocco (LKINOVA, 1972). The geographical names are talten from the original labeh. ' € le collector's name is given when the material was not collected by Rof. Lindberg himself. The Qures are original. The same part of the body and details of its otnictun in members of the tribe Aryfahhi are shown at the same magnifiutionr, so that both the distinguishing morphological characters and the tme &e of the species may be easily grasped and compared.

On his numerous travels, Profesor Hlkon Lindberg, m outstanding IutUdkt and man of science, cnthuriasticaiiy coiiseted reprerntatives of various inrct goupr His collections of psyliiis from Morocco, thc Canuy . Isiands and Madein wbn undoubtedly not intended to give a complete picturc of the fauna of thh lpoup in thor areas, being evidentiy more or l e s incidentil. Nevythcles, they are of a p a t significance as the first matcriai offeriq infonnation on this intensting BIOUP in the extreme south-mst of the Palaearctic. The collections from the Canaries and Mpdeira

are especirlly valuable. since they give some conccption of ihe distinctive character and weaith of the fauna of thoa isiands.

Rylloideu are phytophagou wcking ihcects of s d &.e. They show very narrow trophic spccidization, being restricted to ccrtain p h t ~ , SO and their divertity and genetic differentiation are thus primarüy detcrmined by the -ter of the p n m t vegetation and its genesir in a @ven territory.

Macaronesia ir an independent floral Mon closely COMCCted with the Meditema- man district and the Palaeotropics and having some boreal and neotropical elements in its flora (Iijinsky, 1937). The Canaries. at the eastem liMt of the *on, lie in the zone with an arid climate and semidesert psunmophytous wgetation, almost wholly devoid of arboreous species. The Westem Canariea are mountahous and have a luxuriant vegetation. Altogether, 1300 spccies of v w ñ l l u @ts grow on the Canaries, 806 of which are aboriginal, haif endemic md 490 imported.

In the lower zone (up to 700-800 m above sea-levei) the vegetation has a subtropical-African character. Four vertical zones can be tnced in the mountainous region - the laurel forests at a height of 700-800 m are gradually nplpced by the maquis; at a height of 1600-2100 m are forests ofpimcs cana&nsis, and at a height of 2000-32000 m the dopes are covered with scnibby u p h d derrts, with bushes of Spartocytisus supmbiur

Among the most common laurel spccies are Persea úuika, Lautus crmorirnuí and Ocoreu faiens; the maquis eonrut mortiy of arboreous heathen, su& u Ericu uhomu, of üex. cümbing Convolvulus cmuviensir, and ieguminous shnibs, e.& Cyricus pmli/cnrs and Adenocurpus viscosur Iñc climate in Madeira ir more equabie than that of the C w i e s , though it is

ninier and the average annual temperature ir somewhat lower. There are no pine foreats and mountainous deserts. A zonc with ihra distiishable phytocoenoses foUowr the zone of laurel forests: there grow ccrellr, upiand shrubs. including Vpcemium mudemse, and hcaiths with Erica arboreu and other phts .

Thirty four pcr a n t of the flon of Madeira is endemic; thesc endemic specier are cither relict spacies from Madeúa or nlated to South European species. nie p h t s growing on open land in both Madein and-the Canaries are dortly endemic.

Considention of the zoopopphical composition of the North Macaronesian isiands is rertiicted by the meagreneu of the information avrilable on the food, biology and distribution of these.

Ea& of the 29 species treated here are reported from these isiands for the first time, threc species have recently been described by the author from Morocco and seven are more or leu widely distributed in Europe and Asia.

The most typid feature of the fauna is its Palaearctic - Mediterranean chancter: the gnat majority of the spccies (24-25) are representatives of the humid subtropical Mediterranean region. Thiu U not surprishg, since the hbtoriul connections and preant procimity of the idands to the coasts of Europe and Africa have resuited in great similarlities betwan thcir climate, vegetation and fauna.

Howcver, of the 20 new speciea, Psyl& atiantica sp.n. aionc differs iittie from its cloaest Europan-Asian relations, i.e. the species of the group Itheophila, and Aryfainil& pileohta and A.innrba spp.n. are geneticaily closely connectcd with two

I

species from Morocco. A . h i and A.cogmta me rcmahng 17 speeies are strüungiy difiercnt. and the rmjority teem to be endgnic to Uie Cuurics and Mide¡¡. Thur, the psylüd fauna of the irluidr ir mnrrkible for its diatinctive diuicter and l y e numbcr of endcmic specks and genen.

A m ~ n g the 10 spccier known from the Paiaearctic, Tdom urricoc ir a tnnrp.lre- arctic forest speciu. and Triozu obliqu U llro widely diatributed in that zoogeognphi- cal region. but OCEUR mortly in the uid mnc. Thra rpocks osighate from the uid zone, Rhodochlanis puw@uncturur. DiaphonnO conlinuri and Co@osceniu viridis and until now were biown oniy from Southem M o r o c a .

Two of thepe thm specier are reported from the deserts of the eartem Uiuids LPNIrote and Fuerteventure, while Cvirkiis U alro reported from Cmn Cinuir md from Portugi. Thc npnsentativ« of the gcnus RhodochhnU are xeported from annual dtwortp of the Owno- which are haiophytous and often occu beyond the zone of deserta and stcpper. nie host p h t for R puwipuncrurus ir not yet known, the speeier is recorded from Morocco and Algeria.

The remaining fiw rpccics are of Meditemnean origjn, their faod sourcu are typicai subtropicai arborsJ piants (Oleu. purcicis Lowus etc); like most of the new species, thcy are widely distributed in South Europe and North Africa, and m m of thmi penetrate far into the arid subtropics.

The genetic composition of the Ayl&ideu fauna from the Canary Isluids and Madeira ir thu fairiy homogtneous, the grut majority of the species being of subtropiul origin. There are no boreai speciea; the fact that 10 !% of the species originate from the arid zone indicates a conncction with the Sachara depert fauna. niiS connection ir l e s marked on the i h d s Ytuated fpither from the c o a of South Morocco.
