Rotary Club of Magill Sunrise Page | 1 We had our first behind the badge speaker of the year with our newest member Colin Hill giving us an insight of his life until now. He would let you think it has been pretty mundane but I along with those present would agree that it has been anything but. Colin started life at Mt Gambier and grew up until the age of 12 at Nangwarry a small town between Mt Gambier and Penola. His family then moved to Mt Gambier where he attended high school and at age 16 joined the Airforce (his parents had to sign for him to join as he was too young). Through the Airforce he did an apprenticeship as a Radio and Electronics Technician at RMIT where he graduated in 1965. It was about then his life took off with postings in Australia in Brisbane, Darwin and Laverton where he met and eventually wed a girl by the name of Pauline Pitcher. From here the Hills took off overseas with postings in England, Cyprus and Singapore before returning to Laverton to settle down. They moved to Adelaide in 1982 but after a few years moved to the USA where they stayed in St Louis for 2 ½ years. In 1988 Colin left the RAAF but kept working in the Defence industry until his retirement last year. Over his career he has worked on some amazing projects including the F18 Jet Fighter Procurement Project, the Jindalee Radar Project and the Collins Class Submarine Project. Colin and Pauline have 3 children who have all been born in different cities, Danielle in Singapore, Alisha in Melbourne and Byron here in Adelaide. His Rotary life started in 1997 at the Rotary Club of Morialta and he now finds himself with us at Magill. Thank you for taking us on that amazing journey Colin, we look forward to hearing a few more stories in the not too distant future. After Colin’s behind the badge we held a belated birthday cheer for our Youth Exchange Student Carlo. I even baked a cake for the occasion which I will admit was attempt number 2 and a packet at that but it tasted ok and we all sung happy birthday with gusto. Happy birthday for the 14 th Carlo, we all hope you had a great day. Lastly a reminder that we will be having an evening meeting on February the 26 th most likely at Cafe Va Bene (I will confirm by Tuesday) for members and guests. We will be hearing from Wally Gradara from Ballast Stone Winery and hopefully having a small tasting to boot!! See you all next week.

We had our first behind the badge speaker of the year with our newest member Colin Hill giving us an insight

of his life until now. He would let you think it has been pretty mundane but I along with those present would

agree that it has been anything but.

Colin started life at Mt Gambier and grew up until the age of 12 at Nangwarry a small town between Mt

Gambier and Penola. His family then moved to Mt Gambier where he attended high school and at age 16

joined the Airforce (his parents had to sign for him to join as he was too young). Through the Airforce he did

an apprenticeship as a Radio and Electronics Technician at RMIT where he graduated in 1965.

It was about then his life took off with postings in Australia in Brisbane, Darwin and Laverton where he met

and eventually wed a girl by the name of Pauline Pitcher. From here the Hills took off overseas with postings

in England, Cyprus and Singapore before returning to Laverton to settle down.

They moved to Adelaide in 1982 but after a few years moved to the USA where they stayed in St Louis for 2

½ years. In 1988 Colin left the RAAF but kept working in the Defence industry until his retirement last year.

Over his career he has worked on some amazing projects including the F18 Jet Fighter Procurement Project,

the Jindalee Radar Project and the Collins Class Submarine Project.

Colin and Pauline have 3 children who have all been born in different cities, Danielle in Singapore, Alisha in

Melbourne and Byron here in Adelaide. His Rotary life started in 1997 at the Rotary Club of Morialta and he

now finds himself with us at Magill. Thank you for taking us on that amazing journey Colin, we look forward

to hearing a few more stories in the not too distant future.

After Colin’s behind the badge we held a belated birthday cheer for our Youth Exchange Student Carlo. I

even baked a cake for the occasion which I will admit was attempt number 2 and a packet at that but it

tasted ok and we all sung happy birthday with gusto. Happy birthday for the 14th

Carlo, we all hope you had

a great day.

Lastly a reminder that we will be having an evening meeting on February the 26th

most likely at Cafe Va Bene

(I will confirm by Tuesday) for members and guests. We will be hearing from Wally Gradara from Ballast

Stone Winery and hopefully having a small tasting to boot!! See you all next week.

• Greg for not putting his President chain on for the start of the meeting.

• Mark T for planning our Italian night for Easter Saturday and trying to be

clever and wish Carlo happy birthday in Italian in his card.

• Pauline for the comments she passed during Colin's talk.

• Bronnie cross fined everyone (as did Graham) for people blocking up the table

for signing in.

• Everyone who didn't attend an Australia Day Party.

And everyone who didn't eat lamb on Australia Day!
