command the Wolf Pack. I still can't believe I've gone from JBC Lead (in '94) to the Wolf! There's

Forty-seventh Wolf takes command

5/23/2008 - KUNSAN AIR BASE, Republic of Korea -- A graduate of Texas A&M University be-

came the 47th "Wolf" here today in front of Wolf Pack Airmen and various community and military

leaders from the Republic of Korea and the U.S. Colonel Bryan "Wolf" Bearden assumed command

of the 8th Fighter Wing during a change of command at Hanger 3. Lt Gen Stephen Wood, 7th Air

Force, Air Forces Korea commander, presided over the event. "I'm proud to be on your team and to

be your commander," Colonel Bearden said. During the ceremony the new "Wolf" praised Colonel

CQ Brown, former 8th Fighter Wing commander, for all his work during his year as commander and

said the Wolf Pack must continue to do what the previous Airmen here have done. "It's our time to

accept the mission," Colonel Bearden said. Colonel Brown received a Legion of Merit and the [Re-

public of Korea Air Force] ROKAF Order of National Security Merit Samil Medals during the cer-

emony for his leadership of the wing over the last year. Colonel Brown is headed to the Pentagon to

be a part of the commander's action group for the Secretary of the Air Force. Colonel Bearden

served as the 43rd Maintenance Group commander at Pope Air Force Base, NC. He is a command

pilot with more than 2,000 flying hours.

Col Jack Broughton, one of our LTM’s from the Vietnam era, and wife AJ will be at-

tending our reunion, and he will be our guest speaker at the Saturday night banquet. In

addition to his two books Thud Ridge and Going Downtown, which are classics in the

fighter community, Col Broughton just completed his new book, Rupert Red Two—

another outstanding work on his life and experiences. We can all look forward to an out-

standing presentation!

We are staying in the Bayside Inn on the beautiful 2,400-acre Sandestin Golf and

Beach Resort located approximately 12 miles east of Fort Walton Beach and 8 miles

east of Destin, FL. Free jump-on jump-off trams are available to travel around the com-

-mail received 28 April: “Col. Riedel, I can’t remember if I’ve spoken to you since you sent me one of your

copies of that 1970 newsletter following the Jackson Hole, WY reunion. It was fantastic to see the photos

of my grandfather. It was obvious from the photos that he had a great time reminiscing. It was also fun to see

pics of some of the men I’ve read about now or heard about from the other guys who’ve contacted me. Specifi-

cally, in Norb’s book, Ruff Stuff, he talks quite a bit about the infamous “Roughhouse Bradley”. It was especial-

ly neat to see a picture from that newsletter of my grandfather talking to Roughhouse at the reunion. I can’t

thank you enough for all of the information you’ve provided. I hope you had a safe trip and have returned safe-

-mail received 10 June: “Hi Col. Riedel. Just wanted to let you know that my Father’s Day surprise was a

HUGE success. I even had Dr. Jerry Mason and Wogy live by speaker phone. Let me tell you there were

no dry eyes in the house when after identifying Dr. Mason (wingman and tent mate with my grandfather) and

presenting the letter he had written to me, I looked at my watch and said, “As a matter of fact Dr. Mason is at

home in the State of Washington right now waiting for our call….” Dr. Mason told a story about a close call my

grandfather had with his plane one day, among other memorable experiences they had together. Wogy was fan-

tastic too. He’s an absolute delight to speak with. He gave us some insight into the personality of a fighter pi-

lot….saying, “We were hot stuff. You could have asked any one of us at the time, and we would have told you

so ourselves!”

Just days before the big reveal I even received letters from Bill Coleman (with photos) and a letter from Walt

Hilgart to add to my collection.

Well, just wanted to give the results from all of our hard labor on this project. My dad and his sibs just could

not believe you were able to provide me/us with that newsletter from the 1970 reunion in Jackson Hole, WY .

also reported to us that our active Squadron started this year with two big in-

spections to complete, a flying Standardization/Evaluation (S/E) inspection (tests

their compliance with S/E checkrides/qualifications/procedures/etc.) and a paperwork Unit Compliance Inspec-

tion (UCI) (tests their compliance with all the regulations that go into running a fighter squadron, from privacy

act/file management to managing training/weapons/scheduling/etc.). They’re both very important inspections

and constitute how they did as a squadron (on paper) for the year. Both went on in mid April. Grades are

Unsat, Marginal, Sat, Excellent, and Outstanding. An Excellent is really the expectation. A Sat really

means you have some work to do to be where you should be. The 80th

, like the 35th

, got an Excellent on the S/E

inspection. However, our 80th

was the only unit in the entire wing to get an Outstanding on the UCI. [Ed note]

Pat was the crew chief on our 80th

Squadron’s F-51D

Mustang, #44-73801 at Itazuke AFB, Japan in 1948-

1950. This plane, immortalized in the legendary fighter

pilot song Air Force 801 better known as Itazuke Tower,

was flown by Lt William F. “Romeo” McCrystal, who

wrote and sang the song with his fellow Squadron mem-

bers in 1948 – 1949. The photo at right of Lt McCrystal

in the cockpit of their FF-801, was taken by Pat in 1949. The original words to their song, along with the

painting on the old Itazuke tower, are preserved in the USAF Museum at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio. Please

To Fly Again....

The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress "Piccadilly Lilly II"

Fundraising Campaign and Restoration Project

At the Planes of Fame Air Museum,

Cal- Aero Field, Chino CA, USA

To All Fellow Aircraft and Warbird lovers,

A CALL TO ACTION!!!!!

“My Name is John Atkinson, a member and volunteer at the Planes of Fame (POF) Air Museum in Chino Cali-

fornia. Having helped on many of the restorations in our collection, I am embarking on a mission to see yet, one

more rare Boeing B-17 take her place in the sky.

I am asking for the help of all those who share a love, and passion for these historic and magnificent Flying For-

tresses. The Piccadilly Lilly II now sits on display at the POF museum, but we are lacking the full funding to

restore her to flyable condition.

My goal is to reach one million people or more worldwide via the internet who will be willing to donate just $3

each to her restoration.

This Bomber is an actual movie star. She was used in several movies and TV shows including the TV series 12

O'Clock High,

Baa Baa Blacksheep and the motion picture The Thousand Plane Raid. Owned by the USAF, she was grounded

in 1972 and has not been flown since. But 8 years ago a miracle!!! The USAF gifted the Lilly to the Planes of

Fame, pink slip and all, and it gave us hope to restore her to flyable.

Restoration looks to be a daunting task, and there are naysayers, but a handful of us, including veterans who

flew them, say "WE CAN DO IT"!!! and in fact one of our Volunteer Vets, an actual ball turret gunner on the B-

17 named Kismet, Wilbur Richardson, has pledged $40,000 towards her restoration. We also have a commit-

ment from Vintage Radial Overhaul in Tehachapi CA to restore one engine free of charge once major work is

under way and is a great step to the total 3 million required for a mint factory restoration.

The Lilly was a training ship, never in combat, and the last B-17 used in U.S. Military service. Almost every

piece on her is original factory equipment, and after 30 yrs outside needs some serious work. We have already

restored all the flight control surfaces and are doing what we can at the moment.

On a personal note; my mother, a survivor of the London Blitz, broke down in tears under the Lilly's wing 2

years ago and told me of the time during the war when the children of London were evacuated to the country-

side. Her brother and her were housed at Guildford with a B-17 and B-24 base nearby and she told of how each

day the kids would watch as the bombers took off, grouped up, and set off to war, then later they would watch

and count the lucky ones who made it back, and then smiled remembering the candy and goodies the aircrews

would rain down on the children below, a gift from above in dire times.

But, she also told me off the horrors they saw on the return flights as they passed low over the nearby Hogsback

Hill, of the airplanes on fire, pieces missing , and at times the bodies and blood of those who had given their

lives for freedom.

On that day 2 yrs ago in Chino, my mum made me promise to help restore this grand old lady to the sky so that

we can honor and remember those that built them, the Wasps who ferried them, the crews who manned, fought,

and died in them, and those on the ground who fixed, patched, and prayed each day for their safe return. It is

also for the future generations so that they may learn what this aircraft was all about, so that the history and

memories will never fade.

Of the 12,731 B-17s built, about fifty still exist, and only 16 are flyable. If you are lucky to live near their home

bases as I am, you might see a couple of them each year as they tour the airshow circuit gracefully flying along.

Let's get one more up there so that we, who love the sound of those 4 radial engines, can run or hobble outside

and stand in awe as she passes over head and tell the kids who ask what it is, and teach them of those days long

ago, when the B-17 was the line between freedom and madness.

I make this plea to all of you: help us restore our fair Lilly to the sky.

Mark was living in Kennewick, WA near his two daughters Pat and Liz. His

passing was unexpected as his health had been excellent.

I was with Dad at the San Antonio reunion and knew how proud he was to be a

Headhunter. I know many of the WWII Headhunters have passed, but if you could

relay this to any members of the 80th Headhunters that he knew we would appreci-

ate it. If you know of any members of the 80th who served with him we would

welcome any remembrances they might have serving with him.”

-mail received 30 May: “Angus died peacefully on May 19. He always said

he didn't have any pain when asked. He had bouts of pneumonia the last two months, but usually just slept

through it. We had a memorial service for the family and afterward had a catered BBQ at Susan's house and

then told Angus stories. We cried and we laughed, and I think he would have approved of all the arrangements.

His ashes will be strewn in many places as everyone wanted some for a special place. He will have a military

headstone next to his parents' graves in SD. [signed] Norma Saunders”
