Clinical experts agree that immediate and appropriate
management of a cardiac arrest
makes the difference between life and death.
Lesson Maps
The AHA 2006 instructor materials include lesson maps to help
you facilitate courses. The lesson maps ensure consistency
from course to course and help keep the instructor focused on
the main objectives for each
lesson. Each lesson map lists
the main components of that
lesson, including lesson number,
necessary resources, student
role, objectives, instructor role,
and reference materials.
Students will be able to continue to renew their BLS
for Healthcare Providers certifi cation by completing
part 1 online (which includes the test) and then
performing a skills check with any American Heart
Association BLS Healthcare Provider instructor.
The student can print the new certifi cate, which has
the new Guidelines logo, showing completion of part 1.
Accessing this course is easy; go to
www.onlineaha.org, or through our main
site at www.americanheart.org/cpr.
Instructor Focus
The instructor is a key element in the course. The course
structure ensures that instructors can focus their attention
on observing the students carefully, giving feedback,
and guiding students’ acquisition of skills. Although video
instruction provides the frame-
work for the BLS for Healthcare
Providers Course, the instructor
helps coach the students
and facilitates the Healthcare
Provider Course.
The AHA encourages instructors to
tailor the BLS for Healthcare Providers
Course to meet audience-specifi c
needs. For example, if instructors are
giving a course to staff at a children’s
hospital, they might want to include
extra practice time on infant manikins.

The BLS Healthcare Provider Course is video-based and is
divided into multiple lessons. Many of the lessons are in the
practice-while-watching format that allows the students to
watch the video while practicing skills on a manikin. The video
instruction shapes the course. It defi nes course content and
skills practice intervals and provides consistent instruction to
every participant in every class. This helps instructors maintain
a tight schedule
and provide
a carefully
integrated
curriculum.
