The “New” Jaguar E-Types

Jaguar has revealed theprototype of its ‘new’ Light-weight E-type – a further sixof which the company sayswill be built and sold. Backin May, Jaguar Land Roversaid that its new SpecialOperations division, JaguarHeritage, would recreate six new Lightweights. Each of the six cars would be built to a specifica-tion originated from the last Lightweight E-typeproduced in 1964 and will be hand-crafted at theoriginal home of the E-type, Jaguar’s BrownsLane plant in Coventry, England. The idea is forthe cars to be sold as period competition vehi-cles that will be homologated by the FIA for his-toric racing

The new cars are the ‘missing’ six from the ‘Spe-cial GT E-type’ project, which originally started inFebruary 1963. They were originally going tobuild 18 cars, but only 12 of the aluminum-bod-ied Lightweight E-types were completed and theremaining six designated chassis numbers havebeen sitting, unused, until now. The six new carswill carry those original, historic Lightweight E-type chassis numbersThe six-cylinder XK engine mirrors the originalpower units, with an aluminum block, ‘wide an-gle’ aluminum cylinder head and dry sump lubri-cation

The car was a race winner in the hands of fa-mous drivers during its short competitive careerincluding Graham Hill, Briggs Cunningham,Jackie Stewart and others. The surviving carshave achieved iconic status and are now valuedin the millions today. In recreating the Light-weight E-type, Jaguar Heritage has been able tocall on the experience and craftsmanship ofmany talented engineers and technicians al-ready working in a variety of departments withinthe company.

Derek Weale, Director, Jaguar Heritage Busi-ness said, “Operating from a brand new work-shop at Browns Lane – now open for therestoration and servicing of customer cars – the

building of six new, me-ticulously crafted Light-weight E-type periodcompetition cars byJaguar Heritage is tes-tament to the uniqueskills within the team.To know those same

skills can also be utilized to the benefit of exist-ing classic Jaguar owners means this is a veryexciting time for Jaguar Heritage.”

Some of the team even have an indirect link withthe E-type when it was new: one master techni-cian calculated that his family – including hisgrandparents, his father and his uncle – had acollective 170 years’ service at Jaguar stretchingback to the early 1960s.The expertise and attention brought to bear onthis recreation project is staggering, with the fullresources of Jaguar being applied to ensure thatthe six new Lightweights will not only be authen-tic, but will also be built to the highest qualitystandards.six new Lightweights will not only beauthentic, but will also be built to the highestquality standards.

Mike Cross, Chief Engineer, Vehicle Integrity,Jaguar said, “In our contemporary Jaguar sportscars our aim is always to achieve an immediacyof response to all driver inputs – and the goalwith Lightweight E-type was the same. For me,its response to steering, brake and throttle inputs– along with the terrific noise it creates – is whatmakes it such an engaging machine from thedriver’s seat.”So the six chosen customers will each receivethe rarest of things – a brand new LightweightE-type, hand-built at Browns Lane and just asdesirable as one of the originals, although prob-ably not worth as much as the survivor cars aretoday.
