Through watching other films under the genre ‘teen drama’ the mainconventions were Gangs, drugs, a romance, rumours, teenage connotationse.g. Sex, parties, underage drinking, Gossip, Violence & Weapons, Crimeand a Dodgy area/Ghetto and social groups.

In our opening we chose to use some of most popular conventions, such asromance and social groups to create a relationship with the audience, theywould be able to recognise the conventions of a ‘teen drama.’

A romance is the main feature of our opening, it has

Undertones of other conventions but we chose to show

a love triangle as the majority of the 2minutes so the

audience were confused with a million different ideas

thrown at them.

Developing, using andchallenging the conventions of

real media products.

Our film represents the particular social group “Teen gangsters." We did this

by casting a group of boys to play our gang, gangs are stereotypically boysand so we felt this was the best way to present it.

The setting played a large part in the representation of our gang, the area of a rundown park in a working class area seemed to be an appropriate settingso that the ‘gang’ didn’t seem out of place.

The costume too played some part in the representation, to effectively portray

our social group we dressed them in modern, casual clothing that would beseen on the streets around many parts of London, typically following the ‘chavchic’ look.

Teen gangs weren't the only social group that we were representing, our filmalso portrayed the social group of Teenage girls, our main female character represents this group. Throughout the opening she is heavily made up and in

the location of her ‘girly’ bedroom. Her clothes like the ‘gang’ were modernand ‘chavvy.’

Using the song ‘P’s and Q’s’ by Kano means the representation of ‘teengangs’ is taken further, stereotypically gangs listen to ‘RnB’ and ‘Rap’ musicso we create a familiar scene by having a song under these genres as nondiegetic music in the background.

How our film represents particular socialgroups.

As our film is a ‘teen drama’ it would be financed and produced bya company that has been involved with films that are similar to ours, for example ‘The UK Film Council’ that along with ‘The NationalLottery’ have supported many other successful British Films. The film would be shown in most mainstream cinemas such asOdeon, Vue and the popular company Cineworld. When ‘Street Crush’ is released on DVD it would be sold in most

retail stores like HMV and Zavvi. It would also be available online from websites such as play.com and amazon. Due to the connotations of ‘Gangs’ and ‘Gang War’ we decided

that our film should be a 15certificate as weapons and violence could

feature further on. There could also be the use of Strong languagethat wouldn’t be appropriate for people under 15.

Due to our film being a ‘Teen Drama’ our audience will be mainly made

up of teenagers, however our research revealed that the age range forour film would be 15-25 so there will be slightly older audiences thatshould enjoy our opening and our film.

The audience of our film will most likely be of most ethnicities and bothgenders, the characters ensure that there are no issues of race effectingour film. ‘Street Crush’ is not gender specific so males and females canenjoy it, similar to other films under this genre such as ‘Kidulthood’ and‘Adulthood’ whose audiences we are hoping to attract.

We also think that the audience

for our film will fall under working

and middle class, this is due to

the fact that the characters are

also part of this class so theaudience can relate to them.

As teenagers are our intentional audience we made sure thatthe characters have features that they are likely to identify with,these fall under the following categories;

Music- we use, ‘P’s and Q’s’ By Kano, a popular artist within thesocial group that our characters represent i.e. ‘Gangs’ and‘Teenagers’ so we believed it would attract a similar audience.

Costume- by having our characters wear modern clothing theyare recognisable and attract the audience as they are familiarwith their appearance.

How did you attract youraudience?

Setting- the location of our film ispartially in a park in a ‘rough area’

therefore re-iterating the idea of ‘Gangs’ as they stereotypicallyhang around in parks like many of the target audience do.

Extras- basketball will help toattract our target audience as it’s a

popular sport for both genders butmainly males. This means that

Before the official filming of our film, I had used a video camera but only forrecreational purposes and without a tripod or any real skill or method.

Mac’s aren't the same as normal Pc computers, they have different applications andhave a very different format. Some skills I have obtained from using the Mac’s areapplying effects and transitions and applying sound onto a film.

I have realised the importance of a tripod, our film has many close ups so keeping

the camera still is very important, without a tripod then the shot would be wobblyand look unprofessional.

I now feel that I could use a Mac with confidence and handle most tasks that wouldbe necessary to complete films and make them look as expert as possible.

Progression

The preliminary task enabled me to have new, helpful skills to use for our film.

I learnt how to use the camera and different shots, the task taught me how to make a short film with‘shot reverse shot’ and how to follow the 180° rule.

Without learning these skills our film mayhave been too simple and may not work properlydue to not following the specific rules of filming.

I also learnt how to use a Mac computer and all the

editing programmes on it. Before the preliminarytask I had never used or been on a Mac so it was anew experience. With the knowledge I acquired fromediting the task meant I was able to use them tohelp edit our film.

The preliminary task has enabled us to make our

film much better then it would have been had we notdone it We were able to make the shots in
