WFP Updates on Response to Drought and Flood Affected Areas of Sindh as of 7-1-2015
The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has begun projects to improve livelihoods and reduce
communities’ susceptibility to disasters in Tharparkar, Sanghar and Mirpurkhas districts of Sindh, thanks to a
grant of US$2.78 million from the government of Australia. Around 13,200 families will receive cash payments
for participation in disaster risk reduction activities.
The WFP is focusing on families bearing the brunt of drought in Tharparkar and Sanghar, as well as flood-affected
areas of Mirpurkhas. One of the major factors affecting livelihoods in these areas is inadequate water. This
project will see the construction of community assets that will help improve livelihoods and sustainable food
security. Following assessments to identify the communities’ needs, WFP has identified a series of activities
related to water conservation, rain water harvesting, water pond construction in grazing areas, food and fodder
storage and repair of culverts and access roads. Each participant will receive PKR 5,400 (about US$53) per month
for 15 days of work.
In Mirpurkhas district, the WFP is working with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), of the United
Nations, the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the UNWOMEN on an integrated programme to assist
communities through agri-based and labour-intensive activities. The WFP project will include some 2,000
participants from villages where the other three UN agencies are already working together, in order to support
ongoing activities with the cash grants. “This holistic approach is particularly relevant in areas affected by the
recurrent shocks,” explained Castro. “In the short-term, the cash payments help people meet their immediate
needs, including – crucially – food. In the long run, the assets created in the community will help support
livelihoods and improve food security.”

Polio Updates Date Update Source
8-1-2015 The federal government has made all arrangements to launch the much-awaited and costly vaccine named Injectable/Inactivated Polio Vaccine (IPV) all over the country from July this year. The vaccine will provide cover to children against nine diseases and it will be a permanent feature under the government’s Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI). The four provincial governments have been conveyed to give a final shape to cold-chain arrangements to provide one-doze of IPV to all the target children in their respective provinces through the routine immunization drive, starting from July this year. The salient feature of the new initiative was GAVI’s decision to waive co-financial obligation in the agreement with the federal government and it will now provide free vaccines (IPV) to Pakistan till 2018, a senior official told Dawn on Wednesday. GAVI, the Vaccine Alliance, is a public-private global health partnership which is committed to increasing access to immunization in poor countries. The official said the development came after polio vaccination campaigns suffered setbacks in the country despite continuous efforts. Pakistan is also facing travel restrictions for being a major supplier of polio virus to the rest of the world.

WHO guidelines have declared vaccine mandatory for all travelers in Pakistan regardless of age.
7-1-2015 For the first time in Pakistan's history the health authorities have started administering polio injections in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata), officials said on Wednesday 7th Jan, 2015. The injectable/inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) is said to be highly effective in preventing paralytic disease caused by all three types of poliovirus and is currently being used by a majority of the polio-free developed and advanced countries. Officials in the FATA secretariat told Dawn.com that polio injections have been planned for 17,393 children in the frontier region of Bannu. They said that so far about 5,906 children have been injected with anti-polio vaccines and the five day drive will end on Friday 9th Jan, 2015
