    Whats a fair price for corn silage? That question is dif cult to answer due to the number of factors involved that are dynamic and biologically vari-able. Some factors include production costs; grain price; harvesting costs;

    costs of handling, hauling and storing forage; grain dry-ing costs; fertility and organic mat-ter value of stover; and forage quality (especially starch content and neutral detergent ber di-gestibility). The amount of moisture also has a major in u-

    ence on corns feed value and needs to be considered to determine fair silage prices accurately. Before making any decision, consult an insurance agent for additional impacts on indemnity payments for the sale of silage versus grain. Here are some thoughts to consider if you are a buyer or seller. If you are the buyer (livestock feed-er), start with the price you are willing to pay for ready-to-feed silage. When pricing in-the- eld values, take into ac-count these discounts: lower feed value due to drought stress, cost of harvest and making silage, transportation and any feeding loss. For example, if the value of the ready-to-feed silage is $55 per ton, you need to deduct 10 percent, or $5.50 per ton, because of the lost feed value as the result of it being drought-stressed corn. You also need to deduct the cost of har-vesting and silage making, or $12 per ton ($60 per acre, the custom rate for chopping and hauling, divided by ve tons per acre), which leaves you with a maximum value of corn in the eld of $37.50 per ton. If you are the seller (corn produc-er), look at the value of the corn for grain and the fertilizer value that will be removed if the entire plant is harvested. For example, if the estimated yield is ve tons of forage and 37 bushels of grain per acre, the value of the fertilizer removed from silage is $80 per acre, or ve tons x $16 per ton, and the value of the grain is $222 per acre (37 bush-els x $6 per bushel). This example is based on the assumption that 12 pounds of nitrogen is removed per ton (12 x $.60, which equals $7.20 per ton); four pounds of phosphorus is removed per ton (4 x $.55, which equals $2.20 per ton) and 12 pounds of potassium is re-moved per ton (12 x $.55, which equals $6.60 per ton). Then you need to deduct the har-vest and marketing cost of $28 per acre, leaving you with a value per ton standing in the eld of $274 per acre, or $54.80 per ton. If you decide to harvest the crop for ensiling, the main consideration will be proper moisture for storage and fer-mentation. The crop will look drier than it is, so moisture testing will be critical. Be sure to test whole-plant moisture of chopped corn to ensure that acceptable fermentation will occur. Use a forced- air dryer, oven, microwave, electronic forage tester, near infrared re ectance spectroscopy or the rapid grab-test method for your determination. With the grab-test method, squeeze a handful of nely cut plant material as tightly as possible for 90

    seconds. Release your grip and note thecondition of the ball of plant material inyour hand. If: Juice runs freely or shows be-tween your ngers, the crop contains 75 to 85 percent moisture The ball holds its shape and yourhand is moist, the material contains 70 to 75 percent moisture The ball expands slowly and nodampness appears on the hand, the ma-terial contains 60 to 70 percent mois-ture The ball springs out in your openhand, the crop contains less than 60 percent moisture Then account for the in uenceof moisture when establishing price. Use 65 percent moisture silage at $45 per ton as an example. Each ton con-tains 700 pounds of dry matter (2,000x 0.35). The value per hundredweightof dry matter is $6.43 ($45 divided by seven). However, if the moisture content is70 percent, then each ton contains only600 pounds of dry matter. To have com-parable value, this silage would have tobe priced at $38.58 (six x $6.43) per ton. On the other hand, if the moisture content were 60 percent, then a com-parable price would be $51.44 per ton(2,000 x 0.40, which equals 800, andthen eight x $6.43). But remember, ifthe corn gets too dry, it will not ensile,so proper moisture is necessary to make silage. To calculate on a dry-matter basis,the formula is ($ per ton multiplied by actual dry matter) divided by dry matterfor silage. For example, to determine the price of corn silage at 20 percentmoisture (80 percent dry matter) us-ing the reference price of $45 per tonof 65 percent moisture (35 percent drymatter) silage, the calculation would be($45 x 80) divided by 35, which equals $102.86 per ton at 80 percent dry mat-ter. As you can see, trying to nd anequitable value for corn silage can bea little more work, so some prefer tostart with the following pricing rulesof thumb for corn silage thats ready tofeed, then adjust from there: 1 ton of silage is equal to approxi-mately eight to 10 times the price of abushel of corn. 1 ton of silage is equal to approxi-mately six times the price of a bushel ofcorn plus harvest costs. Corn silage is worth approximate-ly one-third the price of alfalfa hay. While this gives you a place to start,you also need to keep in mind somelikely discounts to feed value, including the condition of drought-stressed corn.According to University of Wisconsinresearchers, if droughty corn is estimat-ed to yield 20 to 40 bushels per acre, thefeed value typically would be adjusted to 90 to 100 percent of the price of nor-mal corn silage. If the yields are esti-mated in the range of 0 to 20 bushelsper acre, the feed value would be 80 to90 percent of the price of normal cornsilage. And if the stalks are short andbarren, then multiply the price by 70 to80 percent. If the buyer is responsible for har-vesting, then use the custom farm rates for your state as a guide to establish credit toward the nal payment. For more information, visit NDSUExtension Service publication What is the Value of a Standing Corn Crop for Silage? online at http://www.ag.ndsu.edu/pubs/plantsci/rowcrops/ec1343.pdf.

    Organic crop producers did well while dairy farmers saw more challenges

    A new report issued by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture (MDA) shows that 2011 was generally a good year for certi ed organic crop producers in the state, and some-what challenging for organic dairy farms, al-though there was a high degree of variability across farm types and sizes. The 2011 Minnesota Organic Farm Per-formance report summarizes nancial data reported by 61 certi ed organic farmers, for both whole farm and for individual cropping and dairy enterprises. It also includes histori-cal data for the four previous years. For key nancial measures, such as rate of return on assets, rate of return on equity, and liquidity, organic farms performed, on av-erage, in the acceptable to strong range. Aver-age and median net farm income were higher for crop farms in 2011 compared to 2010, but dairy pro ts declined, likely due in large part to feed and forage prices that climbed throughout the year. MDAs organic program administrator, Meg Moynihan, says the report is primarily intended for organic producers and those who

    may be considering a transition to organicproduction. Farmers can really nd it helpful tocompare their farms performance against agroup of peers, to see where the farm is doing well, and where it may be falling short, saidMoynihan. Similarly, farmers thinking about going organic in the future can use the report to get an idea of what they might expect. The MDAs systematic collection of or-ganic farm data started in 2006 with fundsprovided by the USDA Risk Management Agency to reduce the cost of tuition for or-ganic farms and is unique to Minnesota. All farms participate voluntarily and their privacyis strictly protected. The report can be viewed on the MDA website at http://www.mda.state.mn.us/fbm. The farms in this report, along with sev-eral thousand other nonorganic operations, participate in farm business management edu-cation programs offered by Minnesota State Colleges and Universities. Their data is ana-lyzed and published by the Center for FarmFinancial Management at the University of Minnesota in a public database called FINBINwww. nbin.umn.edu

    Special Webinar: Drought Strategies, Aug. 27 Due to the widespread drought, there will be a special Hoards Dairyman webinar to address feed supply options for producers and their advisors to examine additional for-age possibilities. Sorting through your forage supply options will be presented by Mike Hutjens, University of Illinois on Monday, August 27 at noon (Central time). Hutjens, who hosts the magazines monthly webinar and presents on nutrition and forage topics, expressed great interest in making this a very interactive webinar, wanting input from par-ticipants as to their current situation, so everyone can learn from others across the country. The exchange of regional experiences can assist others by gaining insight so they are better prepared to tackle their forage needs. Biotal Forage Inoculants (www.qualitysilage.com) stepped forward to sponsor this webinar. If you have not registered before and want to participate in this upcoming webinar, visit www.hoards.com/webinar or go directly to http://on.hoards.com/HD-webinar-signup

    In Her Boots Training supports Women Farmers in Sustainable Agriculture, Sept. 9

    While the number of farms has been on the decline for many years, the number ownedand operated by women is on the rise up nearly 30 percent according to the last USDACensus of Agriculture. The Rural Womens Project, a venture of the Midwest Organic andSustainable Education Service (MOSES), supports these new women farmers through its In Her Boots: Sustainable Farming For Women, By Women, workshop. This day-long, on-farm workshop provides women farmers and food-focused businessowners with an inspiring blend of practical information, skill-building, farm tours, resourceconnections and networking opportunities to encourage and support this growing segment of organic farmers, entrepreneurs and agricultural leaders. Workshops run from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and include lunch and a farm tour. The costis $25 and scholarships are available. Each workshop is on a different woman-owned farmand covers different topics, so women are welcome to attend more than one. These In Her Boots workshops are based on the idea that women learn best from eachother in a format where we can ask questions and mentor and inspire one another, explainsLisa Kivirist, director of the MOSES Rural Womens Project. She and her family run InnSerendipity Farm and B&B outside Monroe, WI. Each workshop offers an inspiring lineup of women farmers who share their knowledge and experiences, enabling participants to dive into the practicalities of successfully running farm and food-based enterprises, includ-ing value-added enterprises, land stewardship, risk management through income diversi -cation, and integrating children and family. To register for any of the In Her Boots workshops go to: http://mosesorganic.org/wom-ensprojectinherboots.html or call the MOSES of ce at 715-778-5775. NOTE: The Domjahn family have farmed on this farm since the 1930s by Rodneys parents Alfred and Delores, with Rodney, Shirley and their family operating the farm since 1967. Now the Domjahns have decided to discontinue the dairy portion of their farming operation and disperse their registered herd of Holstein cattle at auction. The Roselund pre x came to be as a combination of their proximity to Montrose, MN and Rodneys mothers love of roses that are planted in abundance around the farm site. The Domjahns goal has been to produce sound functional cattle that will work in any environment while combining pedigree with production. Foremost in the minds of Rodney and Shirley was the incorporation of their family into the day-to-day farming operation. The children were actively involved in 4H and the whole family showing at local, regional and state venues. We hope you will make plans to be with us on September 11th as the Domjahns begin a new venture into retirement from the dairy industry. Prior inspection welcome by appointment beginning Tuesday, September 4th. Sale will be held under cover. Silage fermentation may produce several kinds of gas, including carbon dioxide and nitric oxide, which in turn produces nitrogen dioxide. Carbon dioxide is non-poisonous, although it can cause suffocation through lack of oxygen. However, nitrogen dioxide is poisonous. It kills and injures people as well as live-stock. Nitrogen dioxide is a lethal gas which is yel-lowish-brown in color and smells like some laundry bleaches. Nitrogen dioxide is heavier than air and will remain at the bottom of air mass over the silage. Shortly after ensiling green plant material oxygen is used up in fermentation and the nitrates present in the plant are released to form one of the oxides of nitro-gen. Normally nitrogen is taken up by plants as ni-trate and converted to protein during normal growth. However, when plant growth is retarded by adverse growing conditions, such as prolonged drought, ni-trates not converted to protein accumulate in the plant stems and leaves. After a drought, rapid nitrate uptake occurs in the plant following rain. Therefore, harvest the crop be-fore it rains, or wait until at least 5 days after a rain. To reduce the amount of nitrate going into plants for

    Drought stricken crops may be dangerous

    silage, cut higher than normally (e.g.10-12 inches forcorn silage). Most nitrates are deposited in the lowerstalk. High levels of nitrates are dangerous for cattle.Always have the nitrate level in your feed tested be-fore feeding. During silo lling operations, do not go into thesilo just to level the silage; instead, make adjustments to the silage distributor to keep the silage leveled dur-ing lling. The danger period for silo gas may be up to amonth or more after silo lling. The period of most rapid production is during the rst 10 days, startingimmediately after material is put into the silo. Duringthe next 3-4 weeks gas production tapers off. Some gases stay trapped within the silage during the initialstorage period, and continue to be squeezed out intothe headspace as the silage settles. Always assumesilo gas is present until you know positively this is notthe case. Silo ventilation and further information can befound in the Silo Operators Manual distributed by your local silo building company. Submitted by the International Silo Association
