“Shark Safety Tips”Each summer, we become more aware of those ocean predators – the various species of sharks. I watched on TV as a surfer escaped from an attack. As of the 4th of July weekend, North Carolina had experienced seven attacks even a surprising surge of bites along the eastern seaboard. Just one or two shark attacks typically occur in North Carolina yearly, with the number around 30 to 40 nationwide and 75 to 100 reported worldwide. Usually 10 to 15 of these attacks are fatal.
In Florida such incidences are more common, yet eleven cases so far this year have received little attention. Though the movie “Jaws” dramatized the terrorizing by a Great White of an American beach resort, this sort of thing rarely happens, except for during the first 12 days of July in 1916 on the New Jersey shore. Peter Benchley found the raw material to write his book, Jaws. That particular shark was called “Seawolf,” killing three men and a boy in four separate attacks. While studying temptation in the recent messages, it seems obvious that we can compare “the roaring lion,” the devil, to sharks (1 Peter 5:8, 9). The word “Satan” means adversary, while the word “devil” means accuser or slanderer. He is on the prowl and is a tremendous “destroyer” (Rev. 12:11); he has a host of demons who assist him in his attacks against God’s people (Eph. 6).Shark safety tips can also apply to our dealing with the devil. If you encounter a shark, don’t turn your back. The Bible says that we must “resist the devil.” While the most infamous sharks are the Great White, the Tiger Shark and the Bull Shark, remember to not splash and to stay vertical. Encountering evil means that we must keep a cool head and a calm heart as we trust in the Lord. Stand in order to withstand! Here are other shark safety tips: If someone is near you, join hands so that you appear larger. We need accountability, unity and the prayer covering of other believers in spiritual battle. To be isolated away from the church is to invite attack. Also, to avoid shark attacks, swim near a lifeguard where help is available, yet realize that actual sharks tend to attack humans in waters close to shore, particularly where fishing is taking place. As we “fish for men” in evangelism, we expect more resistance. Spiritual health is a great preventative; after all, sharks are attracted to bleeding and bright colors or jewelry. If the water is dirty or murky, don’t swim there. In other words, the more worldly you become, the easier it is for you to become bait for the devourer. Let’s continue to stand tall, strong and together in vigilance (Eph 6:10-13; 1 Peter 5:8, 9). The good news is that no bite should be fatal because of God’s forgiveness and healing power.
