    Notes we need to focus on the difference between metaphor and simile;

    introduce analogies because thats an option in the CSTs and Periodic

    Assessments, but dont spend too much time on it because it isnt heavily on

    the questions.

    Monday:Introduction to Standards Reading 1.1 and 3.2

    1. Narrative Vocabulary Make flip chart of the vocabulary. Front of flip chart is the word;

    inside (on the back of the word) they write the definition; on the

    next flap, draw a picture (color for homework)

    Compare - #1 Memoir Narrative Narrator (literary terms) Conflict (literary terms) Event - #1 Theme (literary terms) Illustrate - #1

    Tuesday/Wednesday:

    Standards: Reading 3.2 and 3.3

    1. Warm-up = DOL Journal: Have you ever felt like an outsider (like being the new

    student at school)? What was it like? How did you handle it?2. Barrio Boy (523)

    Background on page 516 Literary Analysis on page 517 Reading Strategy on page 517

    3. Barrio Boy read aloud (T starts and then popcorn reading)4. Once finished reading, have students create the chart from page 517

    that includes Main Point/Assertion, Support/Details, Evaluation

    5. Pass the Hat discussion for Barrio Boy write unanswered questionsand discuss (please see Jenn Wolfe if you need directions)

    Thursday/Friday:

    Standards: Reading 1.1. and Reading 3.2

    1. Warm-up (Friday you probably have time for a journal) Vocabulary Quiz

    2. Partners list the events of the story, Barrio Boy3. As a class, list the events and determine the six most important events

    4. Storyboard the most important events. Directions: in each box, draw(in order sequence) the 6 most important events and write a sentence

    at the bottom of the square that explains why it is

    significant/important. On the back of the storyboard, write (in

    paragraph form) a summary of the most important events.

    Monday, 10/04:

    Standards: Reading 1.1. and Reading 3.2

    1. Warm-up: DOL Journal Tell a story about a time when you had a problem with

    your parents. After that, tell the story from your parents

    perspective.

    2. Find similes, metaphors, and analogies from Barrio Boy listindividually or in partners and discuss as a class

    3. Anticipation Guide for flipped homework and pick two to write aboutTuesday/Wednesday

    2. Philosophical Chairs (using anticipation guide)3. Read Chapters 1 and 2 in Flipped
