Research

• What were the strengths when researching Christmas for you Christmas portfolio?

When researching for my Christmas portfolio I found that looking for the information I needed was very easy to find, this is because Christmas is celebrated world wide so it saved mw a lot of time.

• What were the weaknesses when researching Christmas for you Christmas portfolio?

When researching for my Christmas portfolio I found that it would be very hard to please everyone with my portfolio because not everyone will have the same opinion. In order to make my portfolio appeal to as many people as possible I had to research what people of different ages and gender liked and would want to see in my portfolio. This was very time consuming because I had to research many different aspects of Christmas in order for my product to appeal to as many people as possible.

Planning• What were the strengths when planning for your Christmas portfolio? When planning for my Christmas portfolio I made a time management sheet in order to stay on track, this helped a lot because it kept me informed how long I had left to produce my product. When planning for my Christmas portfolio I also planned what I wanted to take photos of and also the angle so that when I actually was our taking photos I knew what I need to do and how I needed to do it.

• What were the weaknesses when planning for your Christmas portfolio? The weaknesses when planning my Christmas portfolio were that I didn’t have very long to plan so I felt like my work was rushed and not done to my best ability. If I were to plan my Christmas portfolio again I would try and get have more practice with the camera I used because some of the shots I tool weren't very clear.

Time Management

I think that I managed my time really well, this is because I finished my production on time with my work at a satisfactory level. I used the schedule I made from my pre production plan to reference what I needed to do one specific days. On day three my action plan was to borrow equipment(a camera and tripod) so that I could go into the city centre at night so that I could take photos of York city lights and the Christmas stalls, filled with festive gifts and decorations. If I had more time on the production I would try and capture more photos, but the natural side because with the time I was given I couldn’t capture the glam side and the natural side of Christmas.

Target Audience Appeal

My final product appeals to my audience because I made sure to take shots with certain colours that they said would appeal to them the most. From my audience survey you can see that overall people said the colours red and green would appeal to them the most.

My final project appeals to my audience because I took photos of traditional Christmas food, both sweet and savoury, this is because my audience research came back with mixed results saying that they would like sweet and savoury food included in my portfolio. My audience from the research survey were mainly 16 to 18 males, so in order for my product to appeal to them I made to include food, this is because males typically like food, so by having different types of festive food my product hopefully appeals to them.

My final project appeals to my audience because I tried to create a family feeling through my photos. I did this by asking people from the public if I could take photos of them, I took several photos of different aged people around York city centre and edited the photo that gives the best vibe for my Christmas portfolio.

Technical QualitiesI deiced to choose this photo to compare to my photo because I feel that this particular photo from my production has both similarities and differences to the image I have decided to compare. My product is similar to existing products because they are both taken of the same type of product and have also both used focus to drag attention to the main subject(s).

The differences between the existing product and my product are that they were taken at different angles and the focus on the camera has been used differently, making the audience be attracted to different areas on the two images.

Aesthetic QualitiesI think that my work looks good because of how unique the photos I have taken looks. I decided to show this image because I think it best describes what I want my audience to see in my portfolio. This images shows a rack focus directed at the main subject in the photo, the reason I deiced on a rack focus was to make the main subject of the image stand out and drag more attention to the Santa on the soap cup cake.

If I were to improve this product would edit the photo and make the red and white colours more vibrant and also use the brightness/contrast tool to brighten the images to give the image a jolly fee.

Page 9: 7.evaluation

Audience AppealI think that my product appealed to my target audience because for the target audience research I did the results showed that my audience wanted to see the natural side of Christmas as well as the glam side of Christmas. The top photo shows a rack focus on a bauble on a fake Christmas tree with the blurred background looking glammed up. The bottom photo shows a real Christmas tree with simple white lights, showing the more natural side of Christmas beauty.

Peer Feedback

Feedback 1

• What did you like about the product?Overall I liked the focus on the shots because it attracted the audience to focus on the subject the photographer wanted us to.

• What improvements could have been made to the product?

If the photographer wanted improve their work they could try and sharpen the focus on some of the shots, because not all shots were as focused as I would have liked them to be.

Page 12: 7.evaluation

Feedback 2• What did you like about the product?• Included a wide variety of photos• Well thought-out• All photos fit the Christmas theme• Photos are well taken, in focus etc.• Photos include many angles and shot types which adds variety to them• Many different environments/objects and people photographed which makes the

work look more professional as there has been a lot of effort in the photos• What improvements could have been made to the product?• Photograph more stuff to add more variety to the work• Make sure that all photos are in focus and use more interesting angles and shot

types to differentiate each photograph

Page 13: 7.evaluation

Feedback 3• What did you like about the product?– I like the first few macro shots, they make use of perspective to make some of

the objects on the Christmas tree? Look really detailed and have nice bokeh.– I like the ‘artsy’ vibe that some of the photos give off, such as the ones with

the cakes lined up in order of colour slowly fading out of focus.

• What improvements could have been made to the product?– Some of the portrait shots could have had better focus– The composition of some of the street shots end up making the lens

have some barrel distortion (looking warped and weird.)

Page 14: 7.evaluation

Peer Feedback Summary

• What do you agree with from your peer feedback?– I agree with the fact that not all my shots were in good enough focus– I also agree that I took shots in many different places in order to keep

the audiences attention through out my portfolio collection.

• What do you disagree with from your peer feedback?– I disagree with the following statement “Photograph more stuff

to add more variety to the work” I disagree with this statement because I think I had variety in my work.

Page 15: 7.evaluation

Peer Feedback SummaryIf I could change something based on my peer feedback I would re take some of the shots and try to focus them more in order to make the shots more appealing to my audience. I would also try and give a variety of different angled shots in my portfolio so that the audience don’t think that it’s boring or all the same. Another thing I would ensure to do would be to have a variety of different techniques when focusing on the subject I want, In order to keep the audience interested in my portfolio. The two images underneath this writing are images what I did and what I wanted to achieve. The image on the left is my attempt of trying to capture a similar shot to the image on the right. If I were to take this shot again I would create a rack focus on the bricks in the corner of the shot so that the Christmas decorations would be blurred out. I think if I were to retake this image again, it would appeal to my audience and be more appealing to the eye.
