Sleep deprivation is caused by too much RYPEN
excitement and fun according to Melissa Carlesso and
Michael Capoccia in their report to the Club on their
experiences from Friday evening of 20 April through to
Sunday afternoon the 22nd
.
The ‘EN’ in the RYPEN acronym (Rotary Youth Program of
Enrichment) refers to Enrichment and both students
used it many times when relating their progress from
apprehensive onlookers on arrival to being warmly
accepted by 80 of their peers, each pushing each other to
higher levels of achievement.
Friendships expanded exponentially and they are already
focussing on a reunion in the next school holidays.
What is also interesting is that both are now looking to
embrace other Rotary Programs. Michael hopes to gain a
place in the January 2013 National Youth Science Forum
and Melissa’s focus is on undertaking the Rotary Youth
Leadership Award (RYLA) at the earliest opportunity.
Group Study Exchange
Simone Marzengarb, our representative on the GSE
Team to Taiwan, also dropped in for breakfast. She
spoke of her background in film making and her switch to
journalism in the modern multi media/platform world.
She is keen to use the GSE experience to learn how the
formal and informal means of communication of ideas
occurs between the State and citizens and amongst
citizens in Taiwan, a very differently structured country to
Australia.
Simone explained how she learnt about the GSE and the
call for applications by way of a RCMS Members’ Face-
book page and she challenged members who are not
presently using it to get on board.
The Reel Event
The Reel Event, which featured 8 short movies at the
Capri Theatre on Wednesday evening, highlighted the
work of young movie producers, directors and
cinematographers. The shorts ranged in style from
animation, entertaining stories or something with a
message. A bonus was that in addition to our very own
Kirsty Stark 5 others were able to take to the stage to
answer questions from the audience about their work.
We thank Mike Williamson, Matt Vesley, Daniel
Charlton, Ashlee Page and Bettina Hamilton as well as
club members Kirsty Stark, Pamela Williams and Mina
Ward and sponsors for making The Reel Event happen.
All profit will go to ‘Youth Opportunities’. We hope to
make this an annual event.

The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of a worthy enterprise and in particular to encourage and foster
The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service.
High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying by every Rotarian of their occupation as an opportunity to serve
society.
The application of the ideal service by every Rotarian to their personal, business and community life.
The advancement of international understanding, goodwill and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional people united in the ideal of service.
The Four Way Test of the things we think, say or do:
Is it the truth? Is it Fair to all concerned?
Will it build goodwill and better friendships? Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
For good food, good fellowship And the opportunity to serve through Rotary
…we give thanks.
