From the Pastor The gospel today on the Annunciation is the same gospel that we read two weeks ago - on the feast of the Immaculate Conception. Unlike any other human being who is heir to original sin and descendant of fallen human nature, Mary was not at all touched by the stain of Adam and Eve's transgression. From the moment of her conception, she was Immaculate, conceived without sin. That is why the angel addressed her "full of grace." In the beautiful poem of William Wordsworth, an early 19th century English poet, she is "our tainted nature's solitary boast." As we come to the end of our Advent journey, it is but fitting to repeat this gospel - because Mary was the first recipient of the salvation for which Jesus was born. Even if puzzled and not understanding fully what the angel's message meant, she gave her total trust and consent, "Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word." What great faith! What awesome humility! What complete openness to the word of God! This is the path of salvation. In contrast, the way of sin is pride, lack of faith and rejection of God's word. It was the way our first parents took. The result was alienation from God, from one another, from one's very own self and from nature. The result was destruction from all quarters. On his own, man cannot save himself. He can self-destruct but he cannot self-redeem. It would take someone from outside that "fallen state" who can bring redemption. That is why it took someone to come down from heaven to accomplish that. That is why the Son of God became man. And Mary was very much part of that divine Plan. Through her, the Word became flesh; the Light broke into the earth's darkness; the promised Messiah came in our midst. Let us ask Mary then to lead us along the path she followed - the path of faith, humility and obedience to God's word - which precisely is the invitation of Advent - so that we too can "Incarnate the Word" in our lives, and like her, become recipients and instruments of God's salvation. From all of us - the Clergy and Staff of Notre Dame - a Blessed Christmas and a Grace-filled New Year! In the Emmanuel, Fr. Roland A little Tickler: "Thanks for the electric guitar you gave me for Christmas," little Johnny said to his godfather the first time he saw him after the holidays. “It's the best present I ever got." "That's great," said his godfather. "Do you know how to play it?" "Oh, I don't play it," the little fellow said. "My mom gives me a dollar a day not to play it during the day and my dad gives me five dollars a week not to play it at night."

4th Sunday of Advent: December 20

“Hail, full of grace, the Lord is

    with you!” – Luke 1:28

After Jesus, we look to Mary as an ideal steward. Her entire life was lived in obedience to

God’s call. Mary teaches us to live with joy for all we have been given. Just as the moon reflects the light of the sun, Mary reflects the light of Christ. Like Mary, we are

called to reflect Christ’s light to the world through our gratitude and generosity.

    – Lucas 1:28

    Después de Jesús, miramos a

    María como una

    administradora ideal. Toda su

vida la vivió en obediencia al

    llamado de Dios. María nos

enseña a vivir con alegría por

todo lo que se nos ha dado. Así

como la luna refleja la luz del

sol, María refleja la luz de

    Cristo. Como María, estamos

llamados a reflejar la luz de

Cristo al mundo a través de

    nuestra gratitud y generosidad.

  • FOURTH SUNDAY OF ADVENT
