Directions for questions 31 to 33: The passage given below is followed by a set of three questions.Choose the most appropriate answer to each question.

This week, India mortgaged its influence in Sri Lanka to a weak global organisation like the UN. Certainly,a resolution slamming Sri Lanka on human rights that is co-sponsored by Somalia has to have hugecredibility, right? It would have been much better if India had put considerable pressure on Sri Lankabilaterally to get the Rajapakse government to move towards meaningful political devolution. By itself, Indiahas ways to get Colombo to see reason. Through the UN, this gets diluted to the point of being counter-productive. If anybody thinks that a ‘shaming’ UN resolution will get the Lankans moving, think again. Nowthey are more vulnerable to criticism of acting under ‘pressure’. We’re fairly familiar with this syndrome inIndia.

So should India’s Sri Lanka policy only be seen though a Tamil prism? We don’t send the foreign secretaryor NSA to complain to Islamabad every time Gujarati fishermen are harassed by Pakistan. But a massiveoutcry erupts from TN, as if our sovereignty is threatened, whenever fishermen are victimised by Sri Lanka. We’re also afraid to say that many of these fishermen are often out of line themselves. On the Lankan side, those affected by aggressive Indian fishing are also mostly Tamils. India needs to mull these issues as welook to outgrow being a small power. Frankly, in its actions, India is remarkably even-handed with some ofits biggest projects and investments in southern Sri Lanka. It’s just that the Sri Lanka discourse is mainlya Tamil one. We could look to nuance that.

Who are the biggest gainers out of this week’s UNHRC vote? First on my list would be the eager-for-revenge Tamil diaspora, many of who miss the old regime in Jaffna. Second would be the Chinese. Thirdwould be a bunch of activist NGOs. Having said that, Rajapakse’s feet should be held to the fire to pushhim to implement political reforms. Visitors to Sri Lanka these days complain that the country is movingcloser to the style of Myanmar’s junta rather than Indian democracy. Its northern areas are even akin to asecurity state. Yet, like with the Myanmar junta, India should use everything it has to push Colombo totake political steps.

31. According to the passage, which of the following options is the author most likely to agree with?(a) To grow out of being a small power, India should learn to bypass the UN when solving regional

issues.(b) India should have sought to influence Sri Lanka through its bilateral relations with the country.(c) The Tamils in India will be the biggest gainers from the UN vote.(d) Sri Lanka is moving towards Myanmar’s style of political rule.

32. It can be inferred that the author feels that India’s bilateral relations with Sri Lanka shouldA. be tinted with aspects that move away from just looking at the Tamil issue.B. ignore unnecessary discourse and complaints on the Tamil issue.C. be removed from the petty issues of being neighbours with Sri Lanka.

(a) Only A (b) A and B (c) B and C (d) All of the above

Page 8: 771591 Questions

Page 8 Proctored Mock CAT-9 2012

33. According to the passage, what is the flipside of the UN resolution?(a) It has made Sri Lanka more sensitive to criticism.(b) It has brought in some major political gains for China.(c) It is more likely now that Sri Lanka will be criticised for their action.(d) It has soured relations between India and Sri Lanka and especially the Tamil diaspora.

Directions for questions 36 to 38: The passage given below is followed by a set of three questions.Choose the most appropriate answer to each question.

Confucius inspired an entire school of Chinese thinkers. Probably the most illustrious thinker in his schoolwas Mencius. Much like Confucius, Mencius traveled in different states for several years attempting topersuade rulers to adopt his philosophy with little success. He is best known for his argument that humannature is inherently good. He argues that humans are born with the capacity for distinguishing betweenright and wrong. Individuals may not know from childhood which acts are acceptable and which ones arenot, but all children are capable of feeling shame, and once they learn which acts are good or bad, theyhave a natural tendency to approve of the former and disapprove of the latter.

His argument was aimed at countering the then-current theory that human nature consists only of evilappetites, but he also sought to reinvigorate the traditional idea subscribed to Confucius that morality wasdecreed by heaven. Mencius successfully broke down the rigid intellectual barrier between human tendenciesand heavenly decrees. He argued that morality is as much a part of human nature as selfish appetites, andthe biological drives are as much a part of heavenly decree or the natural world as morality is. Another ofMencius’ noteworthy arguments is his idea that the function of a ruler is to further the good of his subjects. If a ruler abuses his power, he is no longer acting as a ruler. Instead, he is just a “fellow,” and he has lostthe mandate of heaven. The people then have the right to rebel against him. Many of Mencius’ ideas can befound in his “dialogue” concerning the transfer of rule from Yao to Shun.

In many ways, Confucian philosophy is a middle-ground between the harsh doctrines of the Legalist schoolof philosophy and Taoism. Legalist philosophy adheres strictly to rules and custom, but it emphasizes

Page 9: 771591 Questions

Page 9 Proctored Mock CAT-9 2012

punishment and discipline, and it lacks the Confucian emphasis on kindness and contemplation. Likewise, the Confucian emphasis on rational practicality and common sense is something that Taoism lacks.

On the other hand, Taoist philosophy is in many ways much more flexible than Confucianism. Taoistwriters seek to avoid being “boxed” by rules, definitions and empty words. They encourage a sort of intuitiveand non-logical way of seeking balance in the world by resisting the desire to interfere with normal processesof nature. Taoism emphasizes wu wei—enlightened non-action rather than needless bustle and “busy-work” for its own sake. Legalism emphasizes wu yu—active attempts to modify human behaviour for thebetter by restraining the evil impulses of humanity in a rigid hierarchy of law. Confucianism, while notcompletely incompatible with either philosophy, suggests that thoughtful contemplation is necessary inmaking decisions rather than blindly following rules (the Legalist philosophy) or letting luck and intuitiondominate human behaviour (the Taoist philosophy). Confucianism thus rejects the Taoist notion that virtueshould be an almost-instinctive and unthinking reaction in the good man. While Confucianism shares thelegalist desire to maintain tradition and behave according to appropriate ritual and precedent, Confuciusrejects the rhetoric and imagery of violent conformity so often founded in Legalist documents. 36. According to the passage, which of the following views can be ascribed to Mencius’ philosophy?

(a) Even when young, people are capable of understanding what causes social disgrace.(b) The capacity to differentiate between right and wrong is inherent in human nature.(c) People are capable of understanding what is right for them.(d) Human tendencies should be held in check according to heavenly decrees.

37. Based on the information in the passage, which of the following options is the author most likely to

agree with?(a) Wu wei and wu yu are at two opposite ends of the spectrum of the philosophies.(b) Taoist philosophy emphasises working towards enlightenment rather than being involved in

mundane activities.(c) Confucianism maintains a middle-ground, while Taoism and Legalism are incompatible with

each other.(d) Taoist philosophy places an emphasis on instinct while Legalism aims to modify human behaviour

in its set form.

38. What is the tone of the author in the passage?(a) Descriptive (b) Opinionated (c) Elucidative (d) Discursive

39. Rita has four identical boxes labelled B1, B2, B3 and B4 respectively. B1 contains ‘Peanuts’, B2

Marinoff’s strongest competition, in fact, comes from the American Society for Philosophy Counseling andPsychotherapy (A.S.P.C.P.), which is devoted to precisely the opposite tack — seeking bridges to theestablished professions. According to Elliot D. Cohen, one of the society’s executive directors, who has aPh.D. in philosophy from Brown University and is a certified practitioner of rational emotive behavior therapy(REBT), a common form of talk therapy, “The biggest obstacle to philosophical counseling’s growth in theU.S. is its acceptance by the established mental health fields, because we’re the newest kid on the block. And what are people in those fields saying now? With Marinoff certifying people who have no clinicaltraining? They’re saying, ‘Philosophers don’t know anything about mental health, and they’re going toserve as an endangerment to clients.’”

As in the early days of psychoanalysis, and the famous rift between Freud and Jung, philosophical counselorsdisagree on everything from the best name — philosophical practice, public philosophy — to whether theyshould be trying to cure people, empower them or guide them to self-understanding. Thus far, only Cohenand Marinoff have branded easily comprehended techniques. Cohen’s logic-based therapy builds on thework of his mentor Albert Ellis, who invented REBT. Citing the ancient Greek philosopher Epictetus, andthe insight that it is not the events in our lives that cause us suffering but the way we interpret them, Ellissees much of our unhappiness as based on irrational assumptions, like demanding perfection from yourselfand others. Cohen teaches critical-thinking skills that help us identify those irrational assumptions andcorrect them.

Marinoff and other practitioners hold that we all have a philosophy of life, whether we know it or not, and thatwe can benefit from identifying that philosophy, making sure it helps us rather than hinders us — definingsuccess, say, in a way we might actually achieve it — and then strengthening it through dialogue with thegreat thinkers. Where Marinoff departs from the others, and sets their teeth on edge, is in the way hepackages the journey of philosophical self-improvement. In “Plato, Not Prozac!’’ for example, Marinoffoutlines a five-step “PEACE process’’ that seems ready-made for daytime TV: identify the Problem, takestock of your Emotions, Analyze your options, Contemplate your entire situation and then — voilà! —reach Equilibrium.

Citing privacy concerns, Marinoff declined to give contact information for any of his clients, but in “Plato,Not Prozac!’’ he includes a case study of “Doug,’’ a late-night-radio talk-show host. Doug sees his Problemas his inability to be happy without a woman to love and the impossibility of meeting a woman while heworks the graveyard shift. Doug’s Emotion is loneliness, and his Analysis of possible options turns up onlytwo: leaving his job or being lonely forever. That’s where Marinoff comes in.

40. Which of the following is the main objection that people in the established mental health fields haveagainst philosophical counseling?(a) Philosophical counseling poses danger to the clients.(b) Philosophical counselors need more training in mental health.(c) The techniques used in philosophical counselling are different from those used in conventional

health fields.(d) Philosophical counseling holds a view opposite to that held by established institutions like the

ASPCP.

41. Which of the following philosophies would Cohen most agree with?(a) “It is by attempting to reach the top in a single leap that so much misery is caused in the world.”(b) “The power of fortune is confessed only by the miserable.”(c) “The miserable have no other medicine but hope.”(d) “Money can’t buy you happiness but it does bring you a more pleasant form of misery.”

42. Which of the following options can be inferred as the reason why practitioners of philosophicalcounseling differ from Marinoff?(a) His solutions are mass-produced and do not benefit the individual.(b) His solutions are packaged to gain publicity.(c) His solutions to problems are either black or white.(d) He presents a simplistic solution for philosophical self-improvement.

When I came to live in Hyderabad a decade ago, a wise man, visibly drunk, told me that the threethings that mattered in Hyderabad were politics, astrology and cinema. Having lived in Delhi formany years, I understood politics as a mixture of sleaze, boasting about your proximity to the highand mighty and an eternal quest for freebies. Hyderabad taught me that politics was still old-fashioned rhetoric and high-decibel posturing. Politics effortlessly simulates the exaggerated kitschof Telugu cinema, with few and rare exceptions in either genre.
