Rememberingthe Battle of Crete

E very May we gather to commemorate the ser-vice and sacrifice of those who served in the battle of Crete, defending the Island from the

German invasion in May 1941.

One of those we should honour is Gunner James Dimitri Zampelis. Among the 2,500 Australians of Hel-lenic heritage who served in the Second World War, James is the only one who was killed in action in the battle of Greece and Crete.

His story is the story of thousands of other Austra-lians who fought on Crete – and in the defence of the Greek mainland before that. It is the story of an ordi-nary man, who once walked the streets of Melbourne as we do, enjoying life in our wonderful city – and where his Greek-born father had made his new home. And a man like so many others who sailed overseas into harm’s way, leaving a worried family behind – including a young son. And like so many others their fears would be answered by his sad death on the beau-tiful but suddenly dangerous Island of Crete.

James and the Zampeli Odyssey James was born in Melbourne on 22nd December

1912, a new addition to the growing Zampeli family. He was the son of Gerasimos and Louisa Zampelis.

The Zampelis’ came from the village of Marantohori on the Island of Lefkada. When James’ father decided to migrate to Australia in 1900, he is said to have been the first to have done so from his village. After short stints in Kalgoorlie and Sydney, Gerasimos finally settled in his new home of Melbourne in 1903. At the time Melbourne had only a small Hellenic community, with the 1901 census listing only 181 Greeks living in Melbourne.

James’ mother was Louisa Elizabeth Sievers, who had married Gerasimos in Melbourne’s Greek Ortho-dox Church in 1910. Louisa and her husband would have three children – Helenea arrived in 1911, followed by Dimitri (or James as he would be known) in 1912 and finally Harold Andrew in 1916.

Sadly, when young James was only 7 years old his mother passed away, at only 28 years of age.

Like many Greek immigrant families, Gerasimos was not long in establishing a new business for his family in Melbourne. After sponsoring his cousin Nicholas to follow him to Australia in 1924, they opened Nick’s Café at St Kilda’s big intersection, the then St Kilda Junction.

Young James was soon working as a waiter. And so began the Zampelis family’s long association with Melbourne’s hospitality industry.

From St Kilda to WarThe Second World War broke out in early September

1939. Barely four weeks later, James went to the Army Recruitment Centre at the No. 7 Drill Hall in Chapel Street, East St Kilda, and joined up as Gunner Zampe-lis. He was 26 years old.

By this time, James had started a family of his own, adding his son Peter James Zampelis to the Zampe-lis presence in St Kilda. Separated from his wife Doris, James listed his son Peter as his next of kin on his enlistment papers.

It’s no surprise that when he was enlisted into the 2/2nd Australian Field Regiment he was given the job of mess steward – a job he was eminently qualified for given his employment and family history!

James’ first experience of army life was months spent at training camps at Broadmeadows and Pucka-punyal, near Seymour. But on 14th April 1940 James departed from Port Melbourne as part of the second convoy of the 2nd Australian Imperial Force – follow-ing in the wake of the Anzacs of the First World War.

The 2/2nd became one of Australia’s famous fighting units in the Second World War. With it, James would take part in some of the major engagements fought by the Australian Army in the Middle East, as well as Greece and Crete.

The unit was commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Cremor who took a keen interest in the conditions experienced by his men. A former school teacher, he was affectionately known as “old bugger and blast” by James and his fellow diggers.

One of the other officers in the unit was Captain Wil-liam Refshauge, the Regimental Medical Officer, who would come to know James personally during the unit’s campaign in Crete.

James’ First Battle Honour - BardiaJames arrived at the Kantarra Army camp in Egypt

on 18th May 1940, the unit being incorporated into the artillery component of the famous Australian 6th Divi-sion commanded by Major General Iven Mackay. The unit’s routine of artillery training was ended with the Italian declaration of war on 11th June.

The 2/2nd took part in the defence of Egypt against the initial Italian invasion and in the famous Allied counter-attack led by Major General Richard O’Connor. The campaign was result in the rout of enemy forces in Libya. One of the battle honours of the unit was its

role, with the rest of the 6th Division, in the battle of Bardia in Libya.

This battle took place over three days in early Janu-ary 1941, with the twenty-four guns of the 2/2nd taking part in the artillery bombardment of this heavily de-fended port and supply base. It was famously reported that some of the diggers advanced at the attack sing-ing an Aussie parody of the popular song of the time – “South of the border, down Mexico way”!

The Australian success was hailed in Australia, compared to those of the First AIF in the First World War. Recruitment surged back in Australia in the wake of the news of the victory. Australia’s official historian of the Second World War noted the vital role of the artillery to the victory, its effectiveness and planning having “subdued the enemy’s fire at the vital time”.

While the battle was followed up by a rapid advance, often referred to as the “Benghazi Handicap”, James and the 2/2nd would not be able to take part in these fruits of their victory at Bardia. They were off to defend the land of his father – Greece.

James – an anzac in HellasWith the decision to send Allied troops to help in the

defence of Greece, James’ unit along with the rest of the 6th Division embarked for Greece on 28th March 1941. The arrival of what would become over 17,000 Australians in Greece in 1941 would see Australian sol-diers and nurses set foot on Greek soil for the second time in less than thirty years.

For James was following in the footsteps of those

Australians of the First World War who had served on Lemnos during the Gallipoli campaign, the sailors of the Corfu flotilla as well as the soldiers and nurse who served in the four year Salonika campaign.

The Australians received a warm welcome on their return to Hellenic soil. Photos of Greek civilians wav-ing and welcoming them, enjoying a celebratory drink with their Greek solider comrades and even tours of the ancient Acropolis – stand as testimony to this welcome.

But the time for celebration was short. In late April, the Germans joined their Italian and Bulgarian allies in invading Greece.

Along with many of the other Australian fighting units, James and the 2/2nd were transported north from Piraeus all the way up the length of Greece to the Servia Pass in northern Macedonia. It was here that the Australians would confront German forces for the first time since 1918.

The story of James’ campaign in mainland Greece is that of the Second AIF. Short, dogged defensive ac-tions, followed by strategic withdrawals through the mountains and valleys of central Greece.

The guns of the 2/2nd started their campaign in Greece on the 16th April at the Servia Pass, continued across the Aliakmon River defence line, then through Zarkos and Lamia – James and the 2/2nd were posi-tioned to defend the withdrawal of the Allied troops.

It was at Brallos pass – above the plains of Thermopy-lae – that the 2/2nd made a stand. Like the famed 300 Spartans of Classical Greece, the Australian artillery stood at the mountain pass in the way of the massive German onslaught, keeping the way clear for the thou-sands of troops and civilians on their way to the south.

On the 21st April the guns of the 2/2nd held up the German advance across the Sperkios River in the val-ley below Brallos Pass. Holding their position until the 24th, the Australian gunners were subjected to sus-tained German artillery and aerial attacks – in one two hour period suffering some 165 aerial bombing attacks by 65 dive bombers and over another eight hours some 160 enemy artillery rounds. But due to camouflage and subterfuge, the Australian casualties were slight, with five killed and three wounded.

Many of the diggers from the 2/2nd at Brallos may well have been aware of James, and no doubt would have been swapping stories of their lives back in Mel-bourne’s inner southern suburbs.

Diggers like Sergeant LS Ingram, a former physical culture instructor from Albert Park, who was killed at Brallos. One of the surviving gunners of that engage-ment was Sergeant JH Lees, a butcher from nearby Prahran. And the commander of the guns at Brallos, Captain JR Anderson, an accountant from Brighton, was awarded the Military Cross for his courage and leadership there.

After Brallos, James and the 2/2nd withdrew south over the mountains to avoid the German air attacks on temporary roads built by Australians engineers.

James arrived at Megara, south of Athens, during Anzac day 1941. After spending the day resting under olive trees, James embarked during the night on Al-lied transports headed for Crete.

But despite having dragged their guns and ammuni-tion over the length of Greece, they were forced to de-stroy their armaments to make room for more evacu-ated troops. James and his uni would face their next battle without their artillery.

an anzac Death on Crete

When James arrived in Crete he would have wit-nessed an island readying for war.

The large harbour at Suda Bay was full of Allied shipping – warships, troopships and supply ships. Already the Germans were preparing the ground for their coming invasion with bombing raids on this im-portant harbour and other key installations.

James was first assigned to help at the harbour. The daily bombing had made it too dangerous for the local civilian labourers, so James and the 2/2nd joined in on the 4th May.

Working alongside Australian engineers, they did a great job - only stopping to unload during air-raids. The 2/2nd even successfully salvaged several Bren gun carriers from a sunken ship in harbour with its upper deck under several feet of water.

Without their guns, the artillerymen of the 2/2nd were now given rifles and put into infantry roles. Over coming days, as the German attack unfolded, James and his unit would form part of what was designated the Suda Brigade, commanded by the British Lieuten-ant Colonel AF Hely of the 106th Royal Horse Artillery.

The role of the Brigade was to defend the inner ring around Suda Bay and to act as a reserve. This lay along a stream which flowed through the village of Mourn-ies, famous as the home of the famed Greek leader Venizelos.

The battle of Crete commenced with German para-troops landings over Maleme airfield on the morning of the 20th May and it would rage over the Island until the evacuation by the Allies in June and be replaced by a four year occupation and spirited resistance by the Cretan population.

James’ war on Crete centred on this village of Mournies, with the rest of his unit. The Germans at-tacked the village on a number of occasions in the days following their landings but were repulsed.

On the morning of the 24th May 1941 James was as-signed to help Captain Refshauge with the wounded men at a sick parade in Mournies village itself.

On that morning the site was dive bombed. Whether this was in response to the attacks of the nearby 2/8th Battalion or merely an attack on the Allied forces in Mournies itself is not clear.

Nevertheless, James and five others were killed and several wounded. Years later the now knighted Sir William Refshauge remembered James “as a good fel-low who had been most helpful in tending wounded comrades at the parade which cost him his life.” He was 28 years old when he was killed.

James was first declared missing in action but later corrected to his having been killed in action. The re-cords say that James was buried by his comrades “500 yards south west of Mournies village”.

anzac legacyJames was one of the nearly 600 Australians killed

in action during the campaign in Greece and Crete.

The remains of many who were killed during the battles on Crete could not be located after the war. This was despite the best efforts of the Australian Graves Registration Units who undertook this task on Crete. The names of these diggers are memorialised on the remembrance walls at the Phaleron Military Cemetery in Athens.

Yet the remains of these Australians – including James - lie forgotten in the soil where their comrades buried them in the lulls after the heat of battle.

Would it not be a fitting testimony to Australia’s honouring of its Anzac heritage – and its connection with Greece – that a renewed effort be made to locate James’ remains, buried south west of the village he died defending seventy three years ago?

Modern technology has delivered amazing results in the battlefields of Western France, such as Fromelles, delivering recognition and remembrance to lost dig-gers and their descendents. Moves are currently un-derway to locate diggers buried near Vevi in Northern Greece all those years ago in 1941.

James’ father became a proud Australian citizen in 1941 – six years after his son gave his life for Austra-lia. As far as we know, James’ son Peter still lives in Melbourne.

While we hope that an effort will be made to locate James’ remains, we should ensure that his service and sacrifice seventy three years ago is not forgotten in Australia and Greece.

James’ story is in many ways quintessentially Aus-tralian. The son of migrants, he joined up to defend Australia and saw service and sadly paying the ulti-mate sacrifice in the land of his father – a symbol of the enduring link between Australia and Greece.

Lest we forget.

George James WilsonG eorge James Wilson turned 19 on 21st Janu-

ary 1940. Early in January, he approached his father to request the written parental consent

needed for those less than 21 years of age to enlist in the Army. George’s father respected his son’s right to make his own decisions, but cautioned him that someone so young probably did not fully understand the seriousness of the request. Following a discussion and with the young man’s enthusiasm undaunted, his father reluctantly gave permission. George enlisted in his home state of Tasmania.

George was in the 2/1 Australian Machine Gun Bat-talion, as part of the 6th Division, which left Sydney, aboard the RMS Queen Mary on 5th May 1940. He did not return to Australia for five and a half years.

Destined for the Middle East, they were diverted en route to reinforce the defences of Great Britain, dis-embarking at the end of June as the Battle of Britain commenced. By mid-November, it was considered the threat had decreased, so the Battalion continued to the Middle East, arriving in Egypt on 30th December 1940.

In April 1941 the Battalion was deployed to Greece. British, Australian and New Zealand soldiers joined Greek forces in defence of their country against the invasion from Nazi Germany. Companies and pla-toons of the 2/1 Machine Gun Battalion fought inde-pendently in support of the infantry units to which they were allocated. George was in 14 Platoon, D Com-

pany, under command of Lieut. W.B. (Tim) Bolton.

The Allied forces were unable to halt the German ad-vance through Greece. After a month of intense fight-ing, the majority of the Allied forces were evacuated to Egypt. Some of the forces, including D Company were redeployed to the island of Crete.

The battle to defend Crete began in earnest on the morning of 20th May 1941 when the Luftwaffe launched an unprecedented, large-scale, airborne of-fensive. The soldiers had considered the imminent attack might concentrate on the airfields, but never the scale of the paratrooper invasion that challenged conventional warfare. George recalled the heavy bombardment, the strafing, the screeching of the Stu-kas and the multitude of descending parachutes car-rying paratroopers to do battle.

Dropping also from the German aircraft were warn-ings of severe reprisals for those assisting the Allied forces. George recalled with admiration that these threats went unheeded. The Germans were confront-ed not only by fierce fighting from the Allied soldiers, but also from the civilian population. Cretan men and women armed with whatever they could utilise as weaponry, joined in the defence of their homeland.

As the German forces consolidated their hold on the island, the Allied command authorised the evacuation of all Allied troops. It commenced on 29th May 1941. The German forces continued to apply pressure both from the land and air. George, as part of the 14 Platoon D Company, under command of Lieut. W.B. Bolton, was now attached to 2/7 Battalion that fought in the vital rearguard action, as described in Capt D. McL Smith’s War Diary:

Lieut. Bolton joined 2/7 Bn when the final rearguard position was reached at about 0300 hrs 30 May. This position was 3-4 miles from SPARKIA astride a gorge and covering the only road leading to the embarkation point. … a large number of 2/7 Bn had been left and unfortunately among this number was Lieut. Bolton and his party.

They fought until the evacuation was over and then, as ordered, formally surrendered to the Germans on 1st June 1941. Many of the rear-guard were captured and became prisoners of war. George was one. Cretan civilians continued to take part in resistance fighting.

George’s father received a telegram early June 1941 reporting his son missing. The family did not receive any further news until a letter arrived on 26th Novem-ber 1941 informing them George was a prisoner of war in Stalag V11A.

After escaping from Stalag V11A, and being recap-tured a few times, George was moved. He was interned in Stalag V111B and Stalag 344. In The Long Carry, A History of 2/1 Australian Machine Gun Battalion Lau-rie, also a prisoner, describes George and his escape whilst working in the mines attached to Stalag V111B: George James Wilson.

Employing some ingenuity and much determi-nation the men managed, during the night, to open locked shutters on the hut and, backing themselves to evade the guard armed with a sub-machine gun, ran for the wire. … They were overworked and under-fed and not sure they could keep going, however fear drove them on … The two men, with little food, hid dur-ing the day and walked at night, always alert for Ger-man patrols which were likely to be on the lookout for them. … Their escape was over after six days on the run.

Just after Christmas 1944, George was one of a large number of prisoners forced to march out of a camp in Lamsdorf. Unknown to them, the German Com-mand had ordered the camps to be evacuated ahead of the Soviet Army advance. In the winter of 1944-45, one of the coldest winters of the twentieth century, in what became known by various names including The Long March to Freedom thousands of prisoners of war were forced to march in columns of hundreds from Poland towards Germany. All columns did not fol-low the same route. The group George left Lamsdorf with began their march in Silesia, Poland, marched

through Czechoslovakia to Dresden, and then whilst still marching towards Stalag VIIA, Moosburg, Bavaria, were liberated by the American advance.

Returning home to Tasmania on 10th August 1945, former prisoners of war were interviewed for an arti-cle in a local newspaper. George said that he was tak-en prisoner on 1st June 1941, in Crete; spent 18 months in Bavaria; was sent to Poland and after two and a half years was marched from Poland back to Bavaria. He added:

“You can imagine our joy and relief when eventually we found ourselves prisoners no longer.”

George married Patricia in 1953. They had three sons and a daughter. He rarely discussed what he had experienced during the war aged 19 to 24, but in 1994 he asked his daughter to write down his memories of these years. George died 30th April 1994.

SFAKIAA history of the region in its Cretan context

George K. Dalidakis and Peter Trudgill

O n the rugged and remote coast of southwest Crete, the fiercely proud and independent people of Sfakia have survived millennia of

invasions by many of the world’s most aggressive and dominant civilisations. This book describes the lives of the indomitable and warrior-like Sfakian people as they struggled to thrive among and against the major Empires of Europe – Hellenic, Roman, Arab, Byzantine, Venetian and Ottoman – and to oppose the German occupation during World War II. With a rich detailing of the oral history of the region and of information gleaned from years of meticulous archival research, this book captures the spirit of the Sfakian people who have mastered its deep gorges, high plateaus and awe-inspiring mountains.

This comprehensive historical account is written for people with an interest in Sfakia and its turbulent past, and in particular for Sfakians and Cretans of the dias-pora who are not able to access Greek language history books and research that deals with this subject.

This book offers much more than the history of Sfakia, as it gives an account of Crete from the prehis-toric period up to the civil war following WWII, and sets the district’s rich history within the context of events that occurred in the broader area, both in Crete but also in the eastern Mediterranean. The book focuses on Sfakia during periods when the region was at the centre of dramatic events on the island, such as some of the bigger uprisings against the Ottoman Empire, as well as on other eras that have made Sfakia such a unique place in Crete.

The book is intended for two main audiences. First, we wrote this for the regular visitors to Crete and the district who want to learn more about Sfakia’s past. Second, we had in mind the many Cretans and Sfaki-ans of the diaspora, and especially those of the sec-ond and third generation, who do not have access to the source materials that we used or who have diffi-culty reading Greek. We have been aware of this dual need, since we have been frequent visitors to Sfakia for many years and have often been asked questions about the history of the area by tourists and Cretans who live abroad.

Ten years ago Peter Trudgill and I decided to research and write a book that would address this need, without realising how big the task was going to be. After eight years of research and writing, one year seeking a pub-lisher, and another in production with Mystis Editions, we finally have in our hands a hard copy of the book that we dreamed about some ten years ago. The book

was officially launched in Sfakia on the 3rd of October and in Chania on the 5th of October.

Although this is a long book, some 300 pages plus an extensive bibliography and index, we believe that it is easy to read and not a dry academic text. We believe that this book will make a serious contribution towards the better understanding by regular visitors to Sfakia of its people, their past and their traditions, which have all been influenced by the region’s extraordinary past, and will thus encourage them to visit the district more frequently and with a deeper appreciation of the area. Similarly, we hope that the more recent genera-tions of Sfakians of the diaspora will be inspired by the achievements of their ancestors against great adver-sity, as outlined in this book, to visit the land of their ancestors.

As our aim has always been to promote the district, our remuneration as authors has been donated to the Sfakian Association of World-wide Sfakians who are based in Athens.

Tom J Dunbabin:An Archaeologist at War

T his book is the sixth in the series published by The Society for Cretan Historical Studies based in Heraklion, that provide first-hand accounts of

wartime Crete. Compiled by his Australian relative, Tom Dunbabin, this book includes a biography and chronicle of Tom’s experiences living among the Crete patriots.

Much has been written of the heroic deeds and daring escapades of WW 2 resistance fighters battling German invaders in Europe. Tom, Oxford scholar and archaeolo-gist became an unlikely hero of the Crete resistance. An officer with the British Special Operations Executive, he spent most of his war gathering intelligence and sup-porting the resistance. With the support of Crete patri-ots he evaded capture by hiding out in caves and remote shepherds huts in the rugged mountains.

Tom’s shy unassuming manner and outstanding in-tellect, along with his mastery of the local language and customs, led him to become a celebrated friend of Crete and loathed adversary of the occupying Germans. A specialist in Greek cultural heritage, Tom’s observa-tions of life in the remote mountain ridges of war-torn Crete give an insight into the lifestyle and culture of the people that enabled them to survive severe German op-pression.

Tom’s father, a journalist who worked for The Mercu-ry in Hobart, and his mother Trixi were both graduates from the Tasmanian University in the early 1900’s. Born in Hobart, Tom moved with his family to Melbourne when he was six, and later to Sydney where he complet-ed his schooling. He studied at Oxford University, Eng-land, and on graduation studied early Greek civilisation in Greece, Italy and the Middle East.

Tom returned to archaeology at war’s end but died aged 44 in 1955.

The anzacs in GreeceThis book adds to the growing understanding of the

commitment and sacrifice Australian troops made in Greece during WW 2. The British expeditionary force that landed in Greece in April 1941, consisting largely of Australians and New Zealanders, was overwhelmed by the advancing Germans and evacuated by the Royal Navy. Many of the ANZAC troops were landed on Crete, only to be forced to evacuate to Egypt a month later as the Germans overran the island. Almost 1000 troops were left behind evading capture they preferred a fugi-tive life in the mountains to a POW camp. Protected and assisted by Cretan shepherds they were evacuated to Egypt and Libya by submarine and small boat over the ensuing months.

The authorTom Dunbabin, a fifth-generation primary producer

farming at Bangor in Tasmania’s south-east is an avid historian. This is his second book, much of it written by Tom about his cousin Tom – Tom was a popular name in the Dunbabin family – is drawn from letters written by the archaeologist to his Tasmanian family.

Interest in his cousin’s life grew in recent years, and particularly so after reading the book, The Cretan Run-ner, which regularly referred to Tom’s activities on Crete. Two years ago Tom and his partner Kathy travelled to Crete to find out more, and were fortunate to find a re-source in the Society of Cretan Historical Studies, and the Director of the Historical Museum of Crete, Dr Costas Mamalakis. The result is “Tom J. Dunbabin, An Archae-ologist at War”, an anthology of life on Crete during two years of living undercover as a Cretan, and the support he found among a community that held him with rever-ence. The book, printed in English with an accompany-ing Greek translation, was launched in Heraklion, Crete on May 27th and Oxford on June 16th.

In May 1941 Australian, New Zealand, British and Greek soldiers stood shoulder to shoulder with the Cretan people to defend their island from invasion.

Vastly outnumbered and facing an enemy buoyed by recent success, almost 800 Australians were killed or wounded, and over 3000 captured.

And although the island ultimately fell, we will never forget the heroic Cretan struggle to retain control of their homeland, nor the compassion of those who sheltered Allied soldiers following defeat.

Seventy-five years on, we commemorate these historic events, and honour the many civilians and soldiers who were wounded or killed in battle.

We also celebrate the enduring bonds between Australia and Greece forged from out of that terrible experience.

Today, the friendship between our communities remains strong, underpinned by our long-standing political and people-to-people links and shared history in war and peace.

I send my best wishes to everyone commemorating the Battle of Crete.

The Hon Malcolm Turnbull MP

Prime Minister of Australia

As we mark the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Crete, it gives us the opportunity to commem-orate the allied forces that so courageously and selflessly defended Crete during World War II.

In what was one of the most dramatic battles of World War II, New Zealand, Greek, Australian and British soldiers fought side by side for 12 days to repel a major airborne assault and defend Crete from invasion.

Our soldiers showed incredible courage and bravery and their efforts will never be forgotten.

The Battle of Crete came at a cost. Among the casualties, 671 New Zealanders died during battle and over 2100 were captured as prisoners of war.

A special bond was formed between many Greek and Cretan families and New Zealand sol-diers, and many chose to immigrate to New Zealand. Today, New Zealand has a strong Greek community.

This anniversary is a day to remember and honour those who fought and were lost in battle, and the friendships forged with Cretan families who helped the allied forces.

Lest we forget.

Best wishes

Seventy-four years ago, the Battle for Crete forged links of friendship, respect and mutual re-gard between the people of Crete and New Zealand. We remember those twelve desperate days in 1941, when New Zealanders fought alongside British, Australian, and Greek troops, as well as Cretan civilians, in a valiant attempt to repel an airborne invasion by elite German paratroopers and glider-born troops.

The Allied forces were unable to repel the German invasion. Once Maleme airport had been captured by German forces, the battle was effectively lost. Of the more than 1700 allied soldiers killed in the Battle, 671 were New Zealanders. Another 2180 were made prisoners of war. Among those who were able to be evacuated were New Zealand soldiers Charles Upham and Alfred Hulme, who both went on to receive the Victoria Cross for their actions on Crete.

Some of our troops eluded capture and were sheltered by Cretan civilians, who did so at great personal risk. New Zealand has never forgotten the bravery and generosity of those hosts, who were themselves suffering the deprivations of occupation.

With the passing of the years, few veterans remain to tell their story. I commend the Cretan Fed-eration of Australia and New Zealand for its ongoing commitment to honour those who fought in support of Cretan freedom in 1941, and to keep alive the memory of their brave deeds.

Lt Gen The Rt Hon Sir Jerry Mateparae, GNZM QSOGovernor-General of New Zealand

Commonwealth of New Zealand

We are rapidly approaching 75 years since Nazi forces launched a massive airborne invasion of Crete. And as is the case every year, the Cretan Federation of Australia and New Zealand is work-ing tirelessly to commemorate the Battle of Crete, to remember those who fought, and to honour the resistance they mounted in the face of overwhelming odds.

What was expected to be a relatively quick and straightforward invasion turned out to be noth-ing of the sort. The resistance of local Cretans, fighting alongside the Anzac and British troops was fierce and unwavering. They were out-gunned and out-numbered, but despite the odds they never gave up. With pride and passion, courage and bravery, they fought with every fibre of their being.

Today we remember the Battle of Crete, for all it symbolises about Greek pride in country and homeland, and for the relationship it forged between our countries. Many lives were lost and immense hardships were endured, but out of all this a bond of mutual trust and respect has flour-ished that lives on to this day.

Together we remember with pride the Battle of Crete and all it means to our nations.

In 1941 New Zealand troops stood alongside Australian, British and Greek forces, assisted by lo-cal Cretans, in what would become a desperate battle to save the island of Crete from the German war machine. The legacy of this battle is still felt today, as we commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Crete.

1941, the third year of the Second World War, was a hard year for the Allies.

By late April they had to make a defensive retreat from mainland Greece as German forces moved down the country.

It soon became apparent that the next German target was Crete, and thousands of Common-wealth and Greek troops were sent there to stage a defence against the invasion with little artillery to help them.

The Battle of Crete, which took place over 12 days from 20 May and 2 June, eventuated in a Ger-man victory and Allied evacuation, with thousands taken as prisoners of war.

Of the 7,700 New Zealanders who served in the Battle of Crete, 671 died, 967 were wounded, and 2,180 became prisoners of war.

While memory of the Battle still echoes loudly in Crete, it is humbling the Cretan people con-tinue to remember the sacrifices of New Zealanders.

In New Zealand, the memory lives on through the small number of New Zealand veterans who remain alive today.

75 years after they fought and sacrificed so much, we must ensure that their memory and legacy are kept alive for future generations.

The Battle of Crete is a story of courage in the face of insurmountable odds, during which the bonds of comradeship were forged between New Zealand and Crete.

Our forces fought side by side, and our soldiers died together in a desperate defence of the island.

The bond forged with mutual bloodshed will never be forgotten in Crete or in New Zealand.

It is a bond which is still strong to this day

Hon. Gerry Brownlee

Minister of Defence New Zealand

As New Zealand’s Minister of Veterans’ Affairs, it’s my privilege to once again provide a com-memorative message for the anniversary of the Battle of Crete.

This year we mark a significant milestone — it’s been 75 years since the 12-day battle claimed so many lives.

In May 1941, 7700 New Zealand soldiers were stationed on the island of Crete.

Fighting side by side with other Allied Forces, those soldiers showcased the attitudes and attri-butes we still value today — bravery, tenacity, practicality, ingenuity and loyalty. It came at great cost though, with 671 New Zealanders killed and 2180 captured as prisoners of war.

Cretan civilians undoubtedly saved many more of our men from a similar fate by sheltering them in the island’s hills.

This anniversary is an important opportunity to remember all those who gave their lives in pursuit of peace and freedom. Crete and its people will forever hold a special place in the hearts and minds of New Zealanders.

Panos Kammenos

Fellow countrymen,

I am particularly privileged, as I am given the opportunity, through your journal, to send my regards and affection to our Diaspora, to our friends and allies in Australia and New Zealand. It is a great honour for me to participate in your tribute to the remembrance of the historic Battle of Crete.

The Battle of Crete is one of the most amazing battles of World War II, which decisively affected its outcome. During this battle, the Greek Epopee of 1940-1941 which had started at the mountains of Epirus and continued at the forts of Macedonia and Thrace played its third act. Its value is well known and nu-merous expressions of admiration from political and military personalities, allies and opponents, were recorded.

The Greek Army, along with the Cretan men and women, united with our British, Australian and New Zealander allies, armed with a unique sense of patriotic duty and with their souls filled with Greece, they showed to the entire world the real meaning of selflessness, solidarity and bravery.

The struggle of those who took the decision to fight an uneven battle contributed largely to the na-tional capital of honour and pride, declaring that freedom is not a given or a permanently assured right.

Therefore, let us draw strength from the historical memory, since 75 years later, within a completely different international environment, great opportunities, but also strong challenges for the peoples’ peace and security, exist.

We have, therefore, to ponder, to draw moral lessons and to understand that we are imperatively in need of compassion, dialogue and of the combined force of our ideals, of our peoples’ traditions and our nations’ history, as well as of the experience from our participation in efforts of the international com-munity and the international institutions for a better future. This is what the common struggles and sacrifices of our friends and allies from Great Britain, Australia and New Zealand underline.

Thankyou

I wish you every success in this year’s Anniversary of the Commemoration of the Greek Cam-paign and the Battle of Crete. The Battle of Crete reversed the chronological order of the war strategy of the Nazi Germany, leading to a change in the course of the entire war and delaying the attack against Russia.

In this historic event, the Allied Forces fought side by side with the Cretans, who courageously

and with spirit of self-sacrifice infused patriotism to future generations. The Greek Campaign and the Battle of Crete will always symbolize the unconquerable nature of the Greek soul.

75 years have elapsed since then, but nonetheless the memory remains alive and the message is as timely as ever. The Greek Campaign and the Battle of Crete forged perpetual bonds with the Australians and New Zealanders, who spilt their blood on Greek soil, fighting against the Nazi atrocities and tyranny.

This year we commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the Battle of Crete and the Greek campaign, a landmark in our history, a decisive turning point in the operations of WWII. We pay tribute to the strength, courage, dignity and human spirit demonstrated by all those touched by these events in 1941. In April and May 1941 Australian, New Zealand and British Troops joined the Hellenic Army in their fight for democracy and freedom - the common bond between these nations. These troops fought bravely to stop the German invasion of Greece reaching the island of Crete.

This event is of particular importance to the relations between Australia and Greece, not only be-cause we admire the courage and bravery of those who participated in the Battle of Crete and the Greek Campaign, but also because it was the catalyst for the strengthening of our bilateral relations.

Although strong bonds of friendship between Australia and Greece were formed during the cam-paigns of WWII, the Battle of Crete further strengthened these bonds and they have been reinforced over the last decades.

It remains our duty to preserve the lasting inspiration of the spirit of the Battle of Crete and the Greek Campaign and to pass it on to our future.

This year we commemorate the 75th Anniversary Battle of Crete and the Greek Campaign. The sacrifices of Cretan civilians and the allied forces in the defence of Crete although tragic, has born many great and lasting friendships between the Cretan and Australian people. We remember these lasting friendships, which have inter-woven our two cultures, which from a unbreakable bond of honour and remembrance for those who perished. Lest We Forget.

We have come together to commemorate those who gave up their youth, those who fought for us and who died for us all in the name of freedom; against the tyranny of the 3rd Reich, the sup-porting Axis powers and the ideology they so wrongfully stood for. It has been 75 years since one of the greatest battles of the 2nd World War occurred, The Battle of Crete. Many historians pro-claim that the battle of Crete lead to the turning of the tides in relation to the outcome of the War.

Dubbed Operation Mercury, Kurt Student had been given two days to take over the island and for this to be achieved he was to use his Fallschirmjaeger. The Fallschirmjaeger, better known as the ‘German Paratrooper’ was said to be a “super soldier” because of the efficient synthesis of ideological and military training respectively. As well as having ‘the chosen ones of Germany’ at his disposal, Student also had hundreds of bombers, dive bombers and various other aircraft to support his attack.

As Dr Constantine Hatzidimitriou states; “Major-General B. Freyberg had very little air sup-port, some light tanks and mostly captured or outdated artillery at his disposal to support his Commonwealth, Greek and Cretan troops. As subsequent events were to show, he also had a secret weapon; the fighting civilian population of Crete, who were to prove themselves a fo rmidable fo rce that terrified the mighty German army and caused them many casualties.” This was the first occasion that the Axis forces encountered such widespread resistance from a largely unarmed civilian population, which in turn surprised them immensely. The “disrespect” shown by the Cretan people to the bodies of the fallen Germans lead to a widespread retaliation by the occupying powers; none were as horrific as the massacre and total extermination of vil-lages throughout the island.

Those that were not killed were indeed left to starve. Even through the suffering of famine, the Cretan people could not help but to reach out to the allied soldiers that had been left behind after the evacuation of the island. Even though knowing very well that if the Germans found out it would result in imminent death, the people of Crete still hid the soldiers from the enemy and kept them from becoming prisoners of war. Not only did the civilians keep the soldiers safe, they also gave them what little food they could. There have been many accounts were ANZAC soldiers were taken aback by the selflessness that the Cretans possessed; acts such as giving a whole small chicken to a soldier to eat as they left themselves with next to nothing were common place. 75 years ago, the ANZAC, British and Greek troops with the aid of our ancestors; the “hot-headed, violent, nationalistic people of Crete” showed a stubborn resilience against the Axis powers and Hitler’s evil grand plan, and for that we are all truly thankful.

We have come together to celebrate and pay homage to those who fought and fell some 75 years ago, to those whom are yet to be publically acknowledged for the hardship they faced throughout the war, and to those that gave their youthful years and lives for us to be so fortunate to live in freedom as Greek-Australians....as Cretans.

•“For you see, Cretans can never be conquered but only occupied for a time, and they will be in constant revolt and turmoil until they regain their freedom.”- Dr Constantine Hatzidimitriou.

•“Hence we shall not say that Greeks fight like heroes, but that heroes fight like Greeks” - Winston Churchill.

•“It must be said, for the sake of historical truth, that amongst all our opponents, only the Greeks fought with such endless courage and defiance of death.”- Adolf Hitler.

After 75 years the Battle of Crete celebrations may appear to be an annual event. Many of us come to expect them an in their consistency we may have lost a bit of the awe that comes with reflecting on such a significant event.

I hope you reading this haven’t lost the awe because behind the formalities and the speeches is a very simple message. We cannot take anything for granted. Sometimes to keep what we have we are asked to sacrifice something. It can be a bit of time or in the case of the Battle of Crete it can be a life.

It may be hard to believe but those people 75 years ago were fighting for you and that’s pretty awesome. Our end of the deal is a lot better tonight. We will eat, we will laugh and we will dance. So tonight 75 years after their sacrifice, remember that we are doing this, for them.

My name is Paula Sagiadellis and I live in Melbourne. My grandfather is of Cretan descent and I am of 3rd generation Greek background. When anyone asks me what makes me so passionate about my Cretan heritage, it is a question that I cannot answer with many words. Only with Cre-tan dance and Cretan music. I have been dancing since I was 6 years old and the Cretan culture is not only in veins but it is my life. I feel very privileged in what I have achieved thus far, from dancing all over Australia to performing in all over Crete, they are memories I will always cherish.

Truth be told, I never fully understood the major impact the Battle Of Crete had to the island and to Australia until I went to Crete is 2013 with our dance group and was fortunate enough to visit the various villages and museums that explained the significance in detail of this unfortu-nate battle. I take my hat off to not only to the Greek soldiers but to those Australian soldiers who fought for our freedom, as if it wasn’t for them I no I wouldn’t be here today. It is truly amazing the stories that we have been told over the past years from Australian war veterans who risked there life’s and are so proud of there fellow soldiers who did not make it out alive. As they keep this battle in there memory, so will I. I plan to pass these stories onto my children and the Cretan culture, so that we keep our traditions and passion for such a beautiful island full of history, alive.

The Pancretan Association of Melbourne will always commemorate The Battle of Crete and will never forget the sacrifices that were made by the Greek, Australian and New Zealand soldiers. It is our duty to educate the next generation to keep this going, to never forget and to honor and remember those who are not with us today.

Cretan Youth of QueenslandI’ve been dancing since I was a little girl and I still enjoy it even though I have grown up a bit.

Dancing has always been a big part of my life and very important for my whole family, which made it even more fun having my sisters and cousins around while learning how to dance. Be-ing part of the Cretan dancing group has been great because we learn new things about Crete and new dances as well. And most of all, we have fun doing it! Finally, I enjoy being in the Cretan group because I get to dance with other kids around my age, which makes it even more fun!

Melina KalykakisPresident

For me, Cretan dancing has always been a way of communication. I believe that Cretan danc-ing is all about sharing, making and passing on. The reason why I love Cretan dancing is because I can express myself in various ways, through various dances. It makes me proud not only to be Cretan, but also to be able to share Crete’s history with people from other ethnicities. It makes me feel endless pride and honour knowing that in the future, I will be able to share my knowledge and pass it on to the next generations!

Alexia KalykakisPresident

Cretan Youth of New South WalesThe Battle of Crete took place between the 20th of May and the 1st of June, 1941. Often over-

looked in general course of the war, the Battle is considered a main turning point, by many promi-nent historians.

Hitler, seeing the geographical advantage of Crete to the Mediterranean, wanted to gain a strong foothold in the south-eastern Europe. Underestimating the passion and love of the Cretans for their homeland, the Nazi’s estimated that the seemingly small, insignificant island of Crete would be taken in a few days, with minimal casualties.

They were severely mistaken.

Ill-equipped in weapons and numbers, Cretans fought with whatever was available for them: knives, pitchforks, maheria and even teeth and nails. Not falling without a fight, the civilian re-sistance in Crete was unprecedented in History. The Battle of Crete was now, in the words of a senior Nazi official, “the graveyard of the German paratroopers”, subsequently Hitler never used paratroopers again, stating that “the day of paratroopers is over”. Although the Battle ultimately resulted in the Nazi occupation of the Island; the heavy casualties caused by the strength and patriotism of the civilians, had caused a lasting effect throughout the war.

Military experts claim that the invasion of Russia (Barbarossa) was delayed by as much as six weeks, due to casualties and loss of equipment. This gave the Russians the opportunity to rein-force their resistance, and thus extend and delay the German advance on Moscow into the onset of winter. This shows the importance of the Battle of Crete in the outcome of the war.

Hearing the many personal stories about ancestors who were outnumbered, but still continued to resist and fight; it is impossible to not feel proud and full of honor that I have Cretan blood.

George VardakisPresident
