Welding DistortionWhen metal is heated it expands and when it iscooled it contracts.(expansion and contraction)Distortion is caused by the uneven heating andcooling of metal. Welding always causesdistortion. It is important for the person performingthe welding operation to be aware of the three maintypes of distortion and how they can be controlled.
Angular Distortion is created when welding a teejoint. If a weld is deposited on one side only, theresults will be that the vertical plate will be pulledfrom 90 degrees toward the welded side.
Lateral Distortion is createdwhen welding plates side byside. The expansion andcontraction is across the weld.As the weld continues alongthe length of the plates theplates pull inward. The plateswill scissor or overlap ontoeach other.
Longitudinal Distortion canalso occur when welding plates side by sideand when the weld is deposited on one sideonly. The expansion and contraction is alongthe length of the plate. A curling action willpull the plate upward toward the weld.
Questions;
1. What happens when metal is heated?. 2. What causes distortion?3. How can distortion be controlled?
