Welcome to our new Schedule

The last twelve months have been another active and enjoyable year for the Society.

Once again Fergus Cumming arranged an excellent selection of speakers to inform and entertain us and even managed to include a couple of VT’s of member’s gardens.

Attendance continues to be good at these meetings, with new faces coming along every month. The main highlight of the year is, of course, our Flower Show in September. Last year, thanks to a splendid idea by Ian Tait, Pudsey Bear from the BBC’s Children In Need opened our Show and presented the prizes. The Show had a new layout and feel to it included local traders forming a Market Street down one side of the hall. Proceeds of over £500 were donated to the Charity Going forward we intend to take all the best bits and make them even better and take some further steps to ensure that our Flower Show stays vibrant and on trend. Come along and see what we have done. The Society also enjoyed an excellent dinner at the beginning of November in Cathcart Castle Golf Club and our thanks, once again, go to Douglas Paterson for organising this. Finally to all the committee, office bearers, member and advertisers who support us every year : A big thank you.

P.S. That’s not me in the Photo but my great-great-grandfather Robert Miller who was President of the original Busby Horticultural Society exactly 130 year ago in 1889.

3. All articles must be the property of the exhibitor and must have been in

his/her possession at least EIGHT WEEKS prior to the day of the Show (flowers in bouquets, baskets and decorative bowls excepted) and a declaration to this effect must accompany all entries. 4. Exhibitors will be permitted a maximum of 2 entries per class. 5. The Committee (seven to form a quorum) reserves the right to appoint

some of their number to visit and inspect gardens of the Member either before or after the Show and also to inspect any flowers which may have already been cut for exhibition.

11. The judges may withhold prizes if they consider the articles unworthy and will have the power to award prizes to any deserving articles thought not specified in the Schedule and their decisions will be final, unless it can be proved to the satisfaction of the Committee that the printed rules have been violated. Protests must be made in writing and must be lodged with the Show Secretary before 3pm on the day of the Show. Anyone lodging a protest must deposit therewith the sum of 25p which will be forfeited should the protest not be sustained.

12. The Committee has the power to refuse entries without assigning any

reason. 13. Prize money will be paid on the day of the Show in the Treasurer’s

Office between 3.00pm and 4.30pm. Prize money not claimed prior to 4.30pm on the day of the Show will be forfeited.

14. In competition, where two or more exhibitors have an equal number of

firsts, a count-back system will operate to decide the trophy winner. Second prizes, then third prizes will be counted. In the event of a tie at that stage, the judge’s discretion will apply.

15. Winners of Cups and Trophies will hold them for ONE YEAR ONLY

and must give the Secretary of the Society a written guarantee that the Cups and Trophies will be returned 14 days before the next Show.

Tips and Hints for Exhibiting How many times have you been to a Flower Show and said to yourself, “I’ve got as good (or better) growing in

my garden!” Have you ever considered showing, but felt slightly intimidated by the exhibits on show? Does the

name Horticultural Society frighten you? Fear not, look no further – we have a 10 point plan for you to blow

away the mystique!

1) Read the Schedule – carefully!! Know what is

being asked for in the relevant classes which interest you.

2) Note dates and times – for receipt of entries,

staging exhibits, times of judging, Show opening and

closing for uplifting exhibits.

3) Consider your entries – complete the entry form with

care.

4) Avoid making too many entries – (tell me about it!)

Enter items you are reasonably sure you can stage well. Trying too much can be stressful.

5) Prizes are not everything – there is more honour in exhibiting well in a strongly contested class

without winning a prize than getting a ticket where there is little or no competition. There is however

also good educational value of a high standard exhibit in a poorly contested class.

It’s not your fault if there are few entries.

6) Encourage others – you might know someone who is a successful grower of flowers or vegetables,

an excellent baker or photographer or have children who could enjoy the involvement. Persuade them

to ‘have a go’.

7) Allow ample time for staging – avoid a last minute rush, when mistakes can be made. Show

Stewards are always available to help you. Just ask.

8) Pay attention to detail – label entries if possible. Make sure entry cards are in position correctly at

your exhibits and are the correct class. Note numbers of specimens required and pay attention to

uniformity in exhibits.

9) Be a sporting exhibitor – the judge's decision, whatever it may be, should be accepted with good

grace. Seek out answers to why your exhibit didn’t win in a calm and patient manner. The Show

convener will always help you here. Do this and you will achieve better results another time.

10) Enjoy – take pride and pleasure in your exhibits and in the word of our neighbouring Mearns

Society: Show what you grow, share what you know! I wish we had thought of that slogan!

Come on and have a go – we know you’re good enough.

Fergus Cumming – Show Convener
