Transformer operations

Running your Lionel 763e Hudson with a Lionel transformer

Place your 763e Hudson on Lionel or Lionel-compatible O gauge track.

• Note the pull of Magne-Traction® between your 763e Hudson and the steeltrack. Magnetized wheels and axles increase pulling power (more than 25 carson straight and level track) and keep your 763e Hudson on track while pass-ing swiftly through curves. Your 763e Hudson will negotiate O-42 and largercurves. Note also the traction-enhancing tire installed on the center driversthat gives your 763e Hudson extra driver-railhead grip. After extensive use, this tiremay require replacement. See your localauthorized Lionel Service Center forexpert tire-replacement service.

• With track power OFF, Connect thedrawbar between locomotive and ten-der. Thats all you have to do withLionel’s new Wireless Tether® , aninfrared communication system that eliminates the plugs and wires of thepast.

Power up your 763e Hudson with your transformer.

• Your 763e Hudson is designed to operate on 8-18 volts alternating current.Virtually all Lionel and Lionel-compatible alternating-current transform-ers are suitable; we recommend the TrainMaster Command model rail-road control system.

• DO NOT POWER YOUR 763e Hudson WITH DIRECT CURRENT (DC). Damage tosensitive electronic components may occur.

• When you first power up your track, the 763e Hudson will wait between 3and 8 seconds as it “listens” for digital language from the TrainMasterCommand Base (available separately). When it’s determined that it’s on a con-ventional (nonCommand) railroad, the 763e Hudson’s headlight will illumi-nate and Railsounds will fire up. At this point, the 763e Hudson is in neutral.(This occurs when placing the Hudson on your railroad for the first time.Thereafter, it starts in forward after every three-second power interrupt.)

Note!

Move ‘em out!

• Get your 763e Hudson moving. Press the DIR button on your CAB-1remote or Lionel transformer. This sequences the Liontech Commandreverse unit (LCRU2) to the next operating state.

• Adjust track voltage until your Hudson moves at your desired speed.

Your 763e Hudson’s Railsounds system—the basics

L ionel Railsounds is the most realisticmodel railroad sound system in the

world. Your 763e Hudson features theR a i l s o u n d sHudson digi-tal sound sys-tem for theultimate in real-ism.

Begin by in-stalling a 9-voltalkaline battery inthe tender. Thisensures interup-tion free opera-tion of yourRailsounds. Thebattery compart-ment is locatedbeneath the ten-der’s removable coal load. Connect the 9-volt alkaline battery to the lead.

Although Railsounds ispowered by track voltage, the battery is required for unin-terrupted operation. Useonly alkaline batteries.

When you first apply track power, the763e Hudson’s Railsounds system pro-duces sounds of a locomotive at rest. As

your Hudsonmoves, chuff-ing begins,increasing withthe locomo-tive’s speed.

To silence thesteam chuffing(whistle/bell areunaffected), slidethe Railsoundsswitch, locatedbeneath the coalload, to the OFF

position beforepowering up thelocomotive. The

whistle is activated by using the lever or but-ton on your transformer or CAB-1.

Discontinue locomotivepower for 10 seconds beforechanging the RailsoundsON/OFF switch position.

If Railsounds “drops out” dur-ing track power interrupts(direction change), replace thebattery.

Install a 9-volt alkaline battery in your 763eHudson’s tender.

W ith Railsounds, you experiencethe sounds of real railroading like

never before. Simply put, it’s the mostsophisticated, authentic model railroadsound system in the world. Andremember—inside your Lionel 763eHudson and Vanderbilt Tender are thesounds of the Railsounds Hudson digi-tal sound system. No other electric traincan offer you authentic Hudsonsounds. That’s the power of Lionel.

• Variable chuff rate. Your 763e’s speeddetermines the steam chuff rate. • MultiWhistleTM. Different whistlesevery time—a Railsounds exclusive.• Authentic bell. Press BELL on yourCAB-1 or transformer to begin the

effect, again to discontinue. Even thefinal “hit” is muted like the real thing.• Reverse unit reset sound. Powerdown your track, wait for 3-5 seconds, and listen for the air-release sound—that’s the 763e Hudson telling you itsLiontech Command reverse unit hasjust reset to forward operation. • Shutdown sequence. No othermodel railroad sound system shutsdown like Railsounds. Turn off trackpower, and after the air-release resetsound, you have two seconds to restartyour 763e Hudson. If you’re done withoperations, Railsounds will commencewith an authentic Hudson shutdownsequence about two seconds after theair-release reset occurs.

Experiencing the range of your 763e Hudson’s Railsounds system

Notes on Railsounds

• Use the volume control dial, locatedbeneath the tender’s coal load, to adjustsound output (see page 5).• Listen for incidental engine soundsduring Railsounds operation. They’reautomatic and, of course, authentic.• The 9-volt alkaline battery you installedensures continuous Hudson sounds, even

during short track-power interrupts.• Longer track-power interruptions (includ-ing locomotive derailments) cause Rail-sounds to shut down after about 7 seconds.• For even more authentic Railsoundseffects, operate your 763e Hudson in theTrainMaster Command environment. Seepage 9 for details.

TrainMaster Command operations

Your 763e Hudson in the TrainMaster Command environment

Lionel TrainMaster Command is the fun and sophisticated model railroad con-

trol system from Lionel. Your 763eHudson features the Liontech Commandreverse unit, which acts as both a conven-tional reverse unit as well as the key tounlocking many extra features when youoperate in Command mode.

TrainMaster Command gives you thepower to operate multiple Command-

equipped locomotives on the same track,at the same time. It’s the most fun youcan have with electric trains, and it’sincredibly easy too! Just follow thedirections below and you’ll be on yourway.

TO OPERATE IN COMMAND, YOU NEED A

COMMAND BASE AND A CAB-1 REMOTE.Find them both at your authorizedLionel retailer.

Place your 763e Hudson on Lionel or Lionel-compatible O gauge track.• Make sure track power is OFF before placing it on track.• Make sure your Lionel Command Base is ON and its communi-

cations wire is connected to the COMMON post on your Lioneltransformer or the U on any of your installed PowerMasters.

• Once positioned on the track, increase track voltage to FULL (onPowerMaster, slide the CMD/CONV switch to CMD).

Address your 763e Hudson with CAB-1.

• Press ENG and 1 on the numeric keypad of your CAB-1 remote. This command is sent by CAB-1 to the Command Base, which thentranslates your commands into digital code. That code is sentaround your railroad’s outside rails in the form of a digital “halo.”All Command-equipped Lionels listen to this digital communica-tion, but they do not respond until they hear their own ID number.

• The digital language of TrainMaster Command—and not trackpower—controls the actions of Command-equipped Lionels. Trackpower is simply like gasoline in the tank of your car—it gives youthe power to go places, but it doesn’t tell you where to go or howfast to get there.

• All Command-equipped Lionels come factory-programmed withan ID# of “1.” To change your 763e Hudson’s ID#, see page 12.

Move ‘em out!

•Throttle up or press any command button on CAB-1. Your 763eHudson will respond to your every command. Read on. The fun is justbeginning!

For quick remote-control of volumebelow the master setting—like muting—use the CAB-1 numeric keypad’s volumecontrol. Pressing AUX1 and 4 on the key-pad lowers overall Railsounds output.

Maintaining your 763e Hudson’s handrail antenna

Y our 763e Hudson’s handrails aremore than just model grab irons—

they’re the LCRU2’s antenna for receiv-ing Command Base digital communica-tions. Please handle the 763e Hudson care-fully to avoid handrail damage. To ensureoptimum reception, both handrails areinsulated from the die-cast shell. If your

763e Hudson experiences difficultyreceiving Base communications, checkthe handrail ends in the cab and pilotfor the presence of insulating material.Ensure each stanchion is present andenjoys a proper fit. Finally, prevent thehandrails from touching any part of thedie-cast locomotive cab.
