On behalf of the Chinese Welding Society (CWS), I am pleased to cordially invite you to take part in the 70th IIW Annual Assembly and International Conference in Shanghai, China from 25-30 June, 2017.
It is 23 years since the CWS held the 49th IIW Annual Assembly in Beijing, and great changes have taken place during these years. Now IIW 2017 provides a fantastic opportunity for the IIW family to explore and experience the multiple faces of China.
This highly anticipated event will not only bring together professionals and experts to exchange innovative welding and jointing technologies and ideas, but will also offer outstanding networking opportunities for exploring cooperation and strengthening friendships.
In the past, the Silk Way connected ancient China to other parts of the world, while today I believe that IIW 2017 will join the Chinese welding community to the global communities in an even more comprehensive way.
I truly hope that participants in this event will discover the unique China in their own way. It is more than a country with 9.64 million square kilometres of land and 1.3 billion people. It is a country with a 5,000-year history, breathtaking national landscapes, a vibrant cultural heritage and immense potential for development opportunities.
I look forward to meeting you all in Shanghai!
Prof. Qiang Chen Chairman of the Organising Committee President of the Chinese Welding Society

The Culture of China
For thousands of years, the culture of China has attracted and moved many people from all over the world, being so unique and one-of-a-kind as well as elegant and inspiring. The Chinese culture that has evolved for thousands of years contains immense beauty and enchanting history.
Shanghai - An International Metropolis
Shanghai is the largest city in China in terms of population and one of the largest urban areas in the world, with over 20 million people in its extended metropolitan area. It is located in China's central eastern coast at the mouth of the Yangtze River and the city is administered as a municipality with province-level status.
Chinese Food
Chinese food culture is an important part of Chinese culture in terms of both cooking and leisure. Chinese cuisine culture goes hand-in-hand with the sophisticated history of China. Chinese food also has a worldwide reputation due to its long-term spread from China to the other regions of the world. The famous China Towns in different countries are known for their special service of Chinese food.
Chinese Drama
China is a country with multiple theatrical activities spread over its large area. Chinese traditional opera, an integration of singing and performance, is the most common, unique and representative form of Chinese theater. Chinese drama includes traditional opera and modern drama. Traditional Chinese drama, ancient Greek tragicomedy and Indian Sanskrit drama are called the World's Three Ancient Dramas.
Chinese Kongfu
Chinese martial arts, also referred to by the Mandarin Chinese term Wushu and popularly as Kongfu, are a number of fighting styles that have developed over the centuries in China. These fighting styles are often classified according to common traits. Examples of such traits include physical exercises involving animal mimicry, or training methods inspired by Chinese philosophies, religions and legends. Styles which focus on “qi” manipulation are labelled as internal, while others which concentrate on improving muscle and cardiovascular fitness are labelled as external.

Green Welding Technologies
for Effective and Reliable Manufacturing Welding is an essential technology that bond materials together in the manufacturing sectors such as the automotive industry, power industry, construction industry and even the aviation industry. With the recent progress of materials-added manufacturing, welding itself has now become a form of manufacturing.
The world today is highly focused on manufacturing, both in developed countries and emerging economies. Whereas green welding is crucial to achieving sustainable development of the manufacturing industries, efficiency and reliability are the critical factors for enterprise competiveness and for improving the quality of life of people. Therefore, the theme “Green Welding Technologies for Effective and Reliable Manufacturing” was chosen for this International Conference to explore these modern challenges.
This conference will be held in Shanghai on 29-30 June, 2017 in conjunction with the 70th IIW Annual Assembly. It will be a unique opportunity for Chinese manufacturers, members of the welding industry and students to hear world-class speakers address the latest topics relevant to their industry.
The conference will open with the distinguished Portevin Lecture, followed by two plenary lectures in a half-day plenary session, which will be delivered by highly respected and well-known experts in the welding world. In the next one-and-half days, the conference will continue in four parallel sessions with relevant topics:
Advanced/green welding and joining processes Simulation in welding Welding of heavy plates, non-ferrous metals and high
strength materials Additive manufacturing.

Old Shanghai Tour (4 Hrs.) Sunday, 25 June at 1:30 pm-5:30 pm Yuyuan Garden: one of the most famous classical gardens in
China. It was inaugurated in the Ming Dynasty and has a total area of 20,000 square metres. The garden demonstrates perfectly the sophisticated art of combining several different elements to create a world in miniature - ingeniously mingling pavilions and corridors, small hills and carefully selected and well-placed rocks, lotus ponds, bridges, winding paths, and trees and shrubs.
