CITY LIVINGA messy bedroom gets the

attention it deserves…

You know you’ve got the colours all wrong in a room when they literally absorb all the light streaming in

from the window. The dreariness of this room was further compounded by the clutter and the lack of organisation. Oftentimes, the best place to start is to declutter and tidy up. Since it is a small room needing to accommodate various things, the best thing was to create a focal wall with a stylish wallpaper. Various touches, like the mirror and bedside tables, emphasise the touches of metallic in the wallpaper, creating a room that’s glam, organised and elegant and far more suited to the lifestyle of a young busy professional.

If a budget won’t allow for a replacement of a large piece of furniture then think

of ways to dress up the surroundings and adding a few colourful accessories. Get a sophisticated look with this intense, grown-up colour that will work in any room, used on the strip of wall behind the couch.

We used Midnight Blue from the Shave Colour Collection 3 (INT-4). The striking colour is perfect for a statement wall. Add highlights of vibrant chartreuse to contrast and lift the look.

TIP: Replacing scatter cushions can change a space completely.

From a drab old-fashioned bathroom to a slick and

sophisticated space that you will never want to leave. This bathroom needed to be completely remodelled, the bath was out of place and the space was just being wasted. The tiles and fittings were removed and the old bath was replaced with a free-standing bath. A new toilet and sanware were also added. To complete this look, an antique dressing table was painted with a glossy black paint for the sink to be placed on. Inside the dressing table metallic wallpaper was added

to give it that extra touch of glamour. The colour scheme used in this bathroom was blue-black, grey and white. The Damask wallpaper was added with a chair rail and took centre stage alongside the deep black painted lower half of the wall which was accentuated with the white brick tiles creating a modern Victorian feel. The wall behind the bath was also painted black giving this previously boring bathroom an updated dramatic look. To finish off the look, a beaded chandelier was added, creating “a bathroom everyone wants to visit”.

BEDROOMREVAMP

A dreary bedroom gets a classic updateStart and end

the day in a soothing space that pampers the senses. Add colours that add an elegant freshness. The end result is a space that is clean, classic and not too fussy. The brief from the homeowner was to update the monochromatic scheme chosen some years back. She now wanted something fresher, so there was an introduction of soft

colours to reflect the rose garden leading off from the large sliding doors. A lovely floral Mavromac fabric in soft shades of duck egg blue, golden yellows and cream served as the inspiration for the final look. A local KZN artist was commissioned to paint the rose paintings and these were hung above the deep buttoned headboard.

PREPARATION OF SURFACE

Ensure that the surface is smooth for optimal end results. Ensure the surface is dust and grease-free. Surfaces can be cleaned with a weak dishwashing liquid solution or sugarsoap cleaning solution before installation.

CARING FOR YOUR STICKERS

Although vinyl is suitable for kitchen and bathroom environment use, ensure this surface is not exposed to repeated direct steamy areas and wipe dry with a soft cloth when wet; corners of sticker may lift after prolonged and repetitive exposure to water. Keep area dry. Wipe down lightly when necessary.

INSTALLING WALL TILES

• Separate the backing paper at the top end and fold back. Line up your sticker to position.

• Re-check the position of the sticker and start by sticking down the exposed top strip.

• Now pull the backing paper down with your one hand while rubbing a squeegee with your other hand to stick down the vinyl on to the surface.

• Work outwards to ensure a bubble-free application.

• Use a pin to prick out air bubbles and rub them out.

PLEASE NOTE: Ensure that corners are stuck down properly to prevent corners from lifting at a later stage. Some tiles are slightly bevelled and you may have to cut the sticker down in size by using a craft knife.Should a corner not stick onto a bevelled edge, dampen the area and secure the sticker down with masking tape. Allow to dry for about two hours and slowly remove masking tape

Available only at Our Decor Stores

Giving your walls and other suitable areas, no matter how small, a head-turning re-vamp couldn’t be easier. Patterned wallpapers and rugs are long-time favourites, and

now it’s time for your walls or plain tiles to get in on the action. These easy-to-use wall tile stickers from Robin Sprong are a great way to add pattern without overwhelming a space. These tiles are fun and commitment-free, save money on actual installation costs and revamp your space in a couple of minutes!

DESIGNS TIPS

• Experiment with various combinations of designs to create your own style.

• Cut tiles into shapes like triangles or cut to regular shapes to create a “subway” style tile.

• Use only a couple of tiles to create accents on every few tiles. One could also use tiles to create an edging on the top or bottom row of tiles. Cut tiles in strips for thinner edging

Workspaces don’t need to be dull or boring. Help increase productivity

by adding splashes of colour to your office space. This office was very plain and muted in beiges and browns. The simple addition of a bright paint colour to a bulkhead and desk chair and metallic supplies helped recreate this space into a fresh and funky style.

An extra-large painting repeating the colours was given centre stage, a chartreuse green was chosen as an accent paint colour for the bulk head and chair. The notice board was updated with a painted canvas and the stationery holder was spray painted in gold to add a touch of glam. We now have a beautiful space that is sure to get your creative juices flowing.

DÉCOR THEMES 2018

WABI-SABI

URBAN OASIS

Here we see 3 décor trends for this year that can be adapted to our South African lifestyle so well and can last for years to come. Whether you prefer a minimal look, a space overly

populated in green or even a subtle touch of blues and creams, take ideas from the latest trends and bring your own flair to them in your space.

The Japanese art of imperfect beauty. A way of living that focuses on finding beauty within the imperfections of life and accepting peacefully the natural cycle of growth and decay. Items are chosen to celebrate the beauty of imperfection in the handmade. Blue ceramics are paired with rich creamy whites and create beautiful spaces with touches of metallic.

Creating an oasis in your home.Bringing nature indoors using deep verdant greens, luxurious textures, organic stone patterns serves as a perfect escapist antidote in urban settings. Bold dramatic wallpapers with botanical prints and dark backgrounds paired tastefully with natural grass and jute furnishings complete this look.

As with colour, balance is key when mixing pattern and prints. Remember, as a general rule, that the more patterns you use, the more you should try to limit your palette.

MINIMAL Lagom is a Swedish term meaning “not too little, not too much - just right”. This means a balanced lifestyle in our lives with everything in moderation, minimalism is then embraced as it brings basic simplicity along with purpose in a balanced space.

Here you will find a considered mix of art, designer furnishings and rich textures. Minimal spaces, with simple colours using only a few key colours. Neutrals and pastels work harmoniously without giving a clinical feel, creating practical living spaces that are balanced and flow well. Accessorise with items of sentiment that can withstand the test of time, those items you can display and look at forever.

Greenery, faux and real plants are added in these spaces as they are perfectly aligned with the Lagom outlook as they are sustainable and have natural beauty.

First impressions count, which means style statements should start at the entrance. Why not coordinate the colour of your home or perhaps a door with its surroundings. Go brave and bold as was done here, working well with the pink flowers that are trellising against the wall.

Macaroons are as light and delicate as air. Each colourful shell is paired with another and has a smooth luxurious ganache and cream or jam-like filling.

Picture a pairing of flavours, colours and textures that you can eat. Use culinary colour combinations as a source of colour inspiration.
