Peer feedback and learning
Who benefits from the process of giving and receiving feedback, and how?
•Peer feedback contributes to your learning both informally and in the module assignments. The idea of peer feedback is central to the aims and values of the module:
•It is the ‘social’ in the social constructivist pedagogy the module is informed by.
•It relates to the idea of belonging to communities of practice. (Wenger, 1998)
•It structures the development of a professional skill.

Peer observation and review of teaching
Models of peer observation (Gosling 2002, 2009)
• Evaluation: authority, judgement, scoring
• Developmental: expert support, feedback to improve
• Collaborative: colleagues, analysis, reflection

Peer observation and review of teaching
Peer observation & review is about:
• Asking questions and checking out
• Exploring
• Challenging
• Mutual benefit
• Understanding and reflecting on the bigger picture of student learning
• Being open and honest
It is not about:
• Making judgements
• Being an expert
• Looking only at the surface – performance

Exploring the assignments
In groups of 3, spend 15 minutes discussing the two assignments:
