Erica Duque, Active Transportation Planner, Region of Peel, provided an update on Bike Month and Bike to School Week. Ms. Duque noted that cycling activities are taking place every Saturday in May and encouraged Members to distribute Bike Month promotional materials to appropriate venues. Committee consideration of the matter included:

Restructuring and linking multi-use paths and trails

Increasing “hot spot” connectivity

Improvement of highway crossings and signage

Increased driver education regarding sharing the road with cyclists

Catering to cycling demographics, i.e., college students and areas with high student numbers

Increasing oversight of cycling infrastructure projects

Improving quality of cycling infrastructure materials

Sufficient bicycle parking facilities

The following motion was considered:

2. Queen Street Transit Master Plan and Downtown Mobility Hub Study

Dayle Laing, Member, highlighted the details of the proposed Downtown Streetscape and noted that the proposed options include cycling infrastructure. Ms. Laing requested that the Queen Street Master Plan and Downtown Streetscape seamlessly integrate cycling infrastructure and use consistent and proper surface treatments.

7.4. Discussion at the request of Kevin Montgomery, Co-Chair, re: Identifying a

Province-wide Cycling Network

Committee consideration of the matter included consensus that the Co-Chairs, on behalf of the Committee, send correspondence to the Ministry of Transportation highlighting the Etobicoke Creek Trail as a cycling attraction and requesting that it be included in the proposed province–wide cycling network. Nelson Cadete, Active Transportation Project Manager, Planning and Development Services, will review the correspondence prior to it being sent to the Ministry. The following motion was considered:

CYC032-2017 That Kevin Montgomery and Anthony Simone, Co-Chairs, on behalf of the Cycling Advisory Committee, the send correspondence to the Ministry of Transportation highlighting the Etobicoke Creek Trail as a cycling attraction and requesting that it be included in the proposed province–wide cycling network.

7.7. Discussion at the request of Patrick McLeavey, Member, re: Bike Racks on Brampton Transit

Patrick McLeavey, Member, noted that members of the public may not know how to properly use the bike racks on Brampton buses and that may deter them from taking transit. Mr. McLeavey noted that he has never used the racks before, but will do so and report back to Committee on his experience. Committee noted that City buses with bike racks often attend City events and demonstrations on the proper use of the racks are provided.

Please add the following recommendations to the agenda for the next Cycling Advisory

Committee meeting on June 15th.

At the March meeting, during question period David Laing posed the question " Why is the

BCAC not being more proactive?"

I would like to put forth the following two ideas to be considered as future policies, directives

and/or recommendations:

1. Designate city streets in each quadrant and paint the sharrows with different more vibrate

colours (pink, green, orange), in order in increase awareness and to help remind drivers that

they need to be more vigilant. On the sidewalks paint a bike symbol with a cross through it

reminding cyclist that they should not be using the side walk, thus making the sidewalk safer for

pedestrians.

2. Increase bike safety near school entrances, trying to make this area as safe and user friendly

as possible, hopefully this will encourage more children to ride their bike to school instead of

being driven to school. This could be accomplished by increasing the no parking and no

stopping zones in front of all elementary schools and to 50 m on both sides of school property,

place more " Watch for Bike" signs and paint sharrows in multi colours so that they are more

visible and a constant reminder to watch for cyclists. Parents may not like having to park further

away to walk their children into school but if we can increase safety and get more children off

their seats and onto their bikes it will be worth the trouble. As stated by Jen Demille in Running

Canada Magazine" You take the harsh stance and people adjust and they appreciate it"

Ontario Making it Safer and Easier to Commute by Bike

May 29, 2017

Building More Bike Lanes and Other Cycling Infrastructure Across the Province

Ontario is making it easier for commuters and families to get around by bike, with new funding to build a

better and safer commuter cycling network across the province.

Minister of Transportation Steven Del Duca and Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport Eleanor McMahon

were in Toronto today, Bike to Work Day, to launch the new Ontario Municipal Commuter Cycling

Program (OMCC).

The province is investing $50 million dollars this year from its carbon market to fund this and other new

initiatives that support commuter cycling infrastructure. The OMCC will provide eligible municipalities with

funding to build more bike lanes and other cycling infrastructure, or enhance existing infrastructure. This

investment will help promote safety for cyclists and make cycling more comfortable and appealing for

daily commutes and other frequent trips. Investing in cycling infrastructure also helps reduce greenhouse

gas emissions across Ontario.

The province has also created a cycling web-hub that will help people in Ontario find cycling information

quickly and conveniently through a single portal.

Making it safer and easier to cycle in Ontario is part of our plan to create jobs, grow our economy and

help people in their everyday lives.

QUICK FACTS

The application form and program guide for the new commuter cycling program will be available

at Grants Ontario on June 5, 2017.

The OMCC builds on Ontario’s Cycling Tourism Plan: Tour by Bike and the Ontario Municipal

Cycling Infrastructure Program, which is helping 37 municipalities across the province build or

improve cycling infrastructure.

#CycleON: Ontario’s Cycling Strategy was announced in 2013 to promote safe cycling and

encourage more people to ride their bikes to work, school and recreation destinations.

About 1.5 million people in Ontario hop on their bikes at least once a week during the spring,

summer and fall, and many cycle year-round.

According to the Canadian Medical Association, a 10 per cent increase in physical activity could

reduce direct health care expenditures by $150 million per year.

The Ontario Municipal Commuter Cycling Program is a commitment under Ontario’s five-year

Climate Change Action Plan, which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to 15 per cent

below 1990 levels by 2020, 37 per cent by 2030 and 80 per cent by 2050.

In 2014, 1.7 million visitors to Ontario participated in cycling and spent $428 million.

Ontario has over 80,000 km of trails; the second largest network of trails in Canada. Trails

contribute to the economy, benefit the environment and improve health. The first annual Ontario

Trails week, May 29 to June 4, will be launched this year.

As part of our continuous efforts to grow awareness of cycling in Brampton, the 2017

Community Bike Rides started yesterday (Sunday May 28th). Brampton Community

Rides is a series of FREE casual cycling tours featuring the City’s wards and

neighbourhoods, running from May to September. These group rides provide

opportunities for residents and visitors to explore Brampton on their bicycles, meet other

cyclists, and enjoy a free refreshment. We would like to invite you to join any or all of the

future rides - a 5 km or 15k km route, depending on your comfort level. Please see

schedule below.

As you are aware an Active Transportation Master Plan (ATMP) study for the City is

currently in progress. The focus of the ATMP is to develop an implementation strategy

to build a connected cycling and pedestrian network across the City to enable safer,

more convenient travel by non-motorized modes, and to encourage cycling as a viable

means of transportation for both recreational and utilitarian purposes. These rides will

offer you an opportunity to meet some of your community members and also help us

create a buzz around the ATMP.
